Indeed, and it only gets more frightening from there. Dark Souls comes HIGHLY recommended.

As for the strangest enemy in video games, well...
that would be...

Funniest have got to be either the small mushroom people or Mimics in Dark Souls. Small mushroom people because they're pathetic and fall over half the time they try to hit you, and Mimics because they look alot like treasure chests and EVERYONE gets eaten first time around. But furthermore, if you throw a Lloyd's Talisman at it, it goes to sleep and you can take the item it was holding. Best of all, it has a chance to drop the Symbol of Avarice, often seen partying hard in combination with the Channeler's Trident.
Then of course the small mushroom people's older brothers come a-lumberin' along and completely wreck you...

At least that's how it happened to me.

The three old ladies in Fallout NV if you have Wild Wasteland perk. They really caught me off-guard!!

Dark souls. He's called Gaping Dragon, he's the boss in the Depths.

I was adventuring near Ivarstead once, and there was a Necromancer whom was attempting to summon a Giant Chicken. This Necromancer was, failing, no doubt; and summoned two regular chickens to fight me.

This was in the Elder Scrolls V; Skryim.

Fuck the floor, jesus. I hated that shit.

I vote for the humble rat, giant or otherwise. Why would rats attack you? Rats aren't aggressive. In fact, they're pretty damn social.

Pretty much anything from Parodius. For example, here is the 1/2 level boss:

The flashlight guards from Sly Cooper. Granted, in the nighttime environments, it makes sense why they need a flashlight. It's dark, they can't see, plus they're big, really imposing and will destroy you if you enter their line of sight. But the ones in the daytime environments you kinda feel bad for, because their eyesight is so poor that you feel like a dick for stealth killing them. So in a way it's actually more sad than silly having to fight an impaired --but strong-- enemy. I mean... the poor guys are just doing their job guarding stuff. They probably have special health rights from the disposable guard union.

Shadow Rise always weirded me out, I think because of the sound she makes combined with the way she moves when she casts spells.

Squidge squidge...

Quite a lot of the enemies in Persona lare kind of strange, at least in looks. I mean you got hands with heads, rocks wearing masks, giant floating spheres with massive tongues...

I still find goombas very wtf odd.

Overlord 2 had these fat little fairys who looked like obease women with giant breasts, tiny wings and huge odd faces that would try to seduce and kill your minions...very odd.

What game is that? It looks like a Goldbox game running on an early 90's Mac, but as far as I know they were all late 80's/very early 90's DOS games. Were there mac versions of some of them?

OT: Goombas. Seriously, they're a walking mushroom with eyes that damages you on contact. The more you think about it, the weirder it is.

Edit: And then I realize the person above me beat me to it by almost 20 minutes.

I believe it's Ultima 3.

Edit: Didn't notice your edit. How embarrasing.

Ah, that would make sense. Similar vintage, same genre, different game and engine.

The most absurd enemy I've encountered in that I didn't expect it at all (there are games I've played with more absurd enemies, but given the nature of the game I wasn't surprised in the least), my vote goes for the mushroom men in Dark Souls. I saw them and was like, "...what?" And then they proceeded to fuck me sideways.

I rather love the Retro New-Age Hippie in Earthbound. Hell, most of the enemies in that game are noteworthy. Also, I've recently been playing Cave Story and I think the Balrog is hilarious. He shares the name of the great fiery beast from the Lord of the Rings, but he looks and acts like the Brave Little Toaster's evil twin.

If your answer to "funniest" is anything other than this, you're wrong

As for most unusual.... well FFX had some incredibly outlandish monster designs. One in particular, I remember, resembled a floating upside down Easter Islands statue with a bunch of rocks floating around it, best I can describe it.
You pretty much said it....I was more surprised that I got an achievement for it, too....

Huh. I'm surprized that no one mentioned this yet, but in Dante's Inferno, the second boss is a lust-inspired woman who grows into a giant and attempts to murder you. If that were the only thing she did then she'd be quite intimidating, but the topless lady has mouths where her nipples should be and then proceeds to give birth to evil baby demons from them.

I had to pause the game there because it was so ridiculous that I couldn't stop laughing.

Escapist, I am disappoint.
