I really like my ps3, I really do, but it just doesn't hold up in my eyes when compared to the gamecube or ps2. These new consoles, they are essentially less powerful pc's. I am just not seeing the advantage of getting one at this point.
They are being infused with all sorts of social media. All I really want it to do is play games. I don't see what is so difficult about that. Because of all the software put into it, there are going to be a lot of updates and just a lot of things I personally wouldn't use. Part of the reason I enjoyed the gamecube/ps2 era so much was that those consoles were designed with the sole intention of playing games. No installing patches (and granted that had to change because of larger games nowadays) or waiting for the system to update, just pop in and play. That was the advantage that console gaming had over pc gaming. When I got my ps2 (my first console) I was amazed I didn't have to wait 20 or 30 minutes for something to install. I put the disc in and a minute later I was shooting Nazi's or racing down a mountain side on a snowmobile.
It seems like none of them are going to be backwards compatible. That is a huge deal breaker for me, since a lot of my favorite games, are from the ps2 era. Star Wars Battlefront, The Timesplitters trilogy, Star Fox games, some of the older James Bond games, metroid, socom, splinter cell, metal gear solid and shall I continue? I can go back and play those games again and again because each of them tried to be their own unique game. Today, many shooting games, in the words of Yahtzee are "Call of Duty or equivalent". I enjoy occasionally playing battlefield or rainbow six or going back to play call of duty 4, but I also enjoy getting something totally different too and there are long periods of time when that is lacking in games. COD or Battlefield? GTA or Saints Row? Gran Turismo or Forza? It seems many console games are just trying to be the next big AAA title by simply copying traits of the existing one. PC has a lot of indie gaming so if you want something there you just go and browse for them.
There just don't really seem to be any advantages for getting a next gen console for me. If there was backwards compatibility then I would at least have the incentive to get one so incase one of my older consoles broke I could still play those games but that just doesn't seem like it would happen.
So really, what is the point of consoles nowadays? Anything you can get from them you get off a pc.
