The Ring. I watched it on DVD and on the special features one says "don't watch this". Still haven't.
I totally watched it! I think the phone rang not too long after I watched it and it scared the hell out of me... xD
The first time I was watching the ring with my then girlfriend, my friend called at just the right time, and she freaked clean the fuck out.. screaming, throwing an utter fit

it was fucking hilarious

The Blair Witch Project. Less is definitely more with horror. Having said that, the bit in The Ring where she crawls out of the TV made me shit brix.

Though not directly scary, Hard Candy with Ellen Page as a sadistic teenager was by far the most emotionally disturbing movie I've experienced. Intense stuff.
One of my friends described that movie to me and I still haven't worked up the courage to watch it.
When you do, just be sure to watch in broad daylight, in a comforting environment, maybe with a coupla friends.

I don't normally get scared, per se, by movies. But there was something about "Audition" that was just off. I watched it at my girlfriends place a few years ago. After it ended, I just kinda went, "Meh". I got in my truck to leave and one specific scene just stuck in my head. My girlfriend was so spooked by it that she called me up and asked me to come back and stay with her so I I turned around and drove back, made some cocoa, and we ended up watching fricking "Aladdin".

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is paranoid and intense, plus horribly gross.
One of my favourites!

Event Horizon was probably one of the scariest films I've seen.

Horror movies as a rule are rubbish. It's rare to come across a really good one and even then they're atmosperic at best, rather than outright terrifying.

The Shining was however, absolutely horrifying. Definitely one of the creepiest movies I've seen in my life.

Second would probably 1408. It was so intrinsic, and when the guy turned on the tape recorder at the end I shivered.

The Ring was good. I loved the way it was filmed, everything was just outside of your vision. I thought overall the Japanese version was better, although the tape itself was scarier in the remake.

Most other horror movies just bore me. Never watch the remake of Dark Water. Or the Hills have Eyes. Yawn.

The Shining was proof that it was not impossible for a horror movie to still scare a jaded fan. Definitely creepy to watch. 1408 was a really well-done psychological freak-out. Other than that, most horror movies entertain, rather than scare me.

The Exorcist
followed closely by
John Carpenter's The Thing
I'm slightly embarrassed to say The Evil Dead scared me so bad as a 12-year old that I couldn't sleep the whole night at my friend's house after watching it. Not talking about the goofy Evil Dead 2 which was the precursor to The Army of Darkness, but the older first movie.

The first clue that I was a psychopath was my grinning at the sight of the stupid protagonists getting ripped to shreds.

no, just kidding, I am not scared by movies.
The stuff people put in my head at school is something to be feared though.
