Sometimes is simply stop caring about the main character no matter how good the game may be on its own

Usually, complete and utter frustration.

A little redundant I suppose, but who cares.

Main reason: I will go a few days playing the game as much as I can, then not be able to play it for a few days (spending the weekend at my dads, mostly) then when I get the chance to play it again, I don't feel like playing it. So basically, it is like an addiction, cut the supply and you will be fine.

Other reasons: too boring, once I played another game for a while I couldn't start playing the other one again (like the main reasosn), overplayed, and got all the achievements I could (I'm not buying the RE5 addon, and the AI is too dumb to beat the game on Professional without a friend.)

GTA4

I was at the last mission when I just laid down the controller and said "Ya know what, I really don't care how this ends."

I stop playing if a game:
- Gets too hard
- Makes me feel ill (occasional motion sickness)
- Breaks (scratches etc.)

I've never not finished a game. Even if I hated it, I make myself finish it to justify having spent money on it.
This.

IF I HAVEN'T spent money on it, (borrowed from friend or something) then...

-Lack of giving a damn.
-Busy with other things.
-Play it a lot one day, then don't see my computer for a couple days (out doing other things)
-Come back and forget that I had it, and go back to some other game I was playing beforehand.

When the difficulty becomes disproportionate to the amount of enjoyment I'm getting out of the game.

I tend to get ADHD with my games.. I don't finish a lot of games right away and will get partway into a game and then before I know it another game catches my interest and I start playing that instead and then another game etc. I eventually go back and finish the games but it might take me months to get around to it before I go "hey.. I never finished.."

Like for example I'm on the last island on my first playthrough of RE4 Wii edition still. I need to get around to finishing that. This thread reminded me :p

I'm pretty bad in that I buy like tons of Nintendo DS games and I very rarely finish them because I only tend to play them when I'm out and about yet so many good games come out for that little sucker that I don't have time to finish them all. There are some games for the DS I haven't even STARTED playing yet but I own and have owned for months! I just *barely* started a new game on Chrono Trigger DS (but I'm not too concerned because I've beaten Chrono Trigger many many times but Chrono Trigger on a road trip or a bus? HECK YES).. and then Dragon Quest V came out! Think that's bad? It was only just before Chrono Trigger came out that I finally said oh wait, I'm basically at the last boss in Phantom Hourglass, I should really finish that!

Among the games on the DS I have not finished:

DQ5 (but that's new and I am in the middle of playing it.. when I'm out of the house and in waiting rooms and stuff)
Final Fantasy III.. um yeah.. I should finish that one.. I'm not too far into it even, I remember getting past the first island area and am in the flooded world.
Final Fantasy IV.. I've beaten the SNES and GBA version so I'm not as compelled to finish it but I AM like right there just grindin to get Meteor on Rydia I think in the Lunar Subterrane.. then.. new game plus? I stopped playing it because Chrono Trigger was coming out.. and well I finished Phantom Hourglass first.
Castlevania Order of Ecclesia

I haven't even STARTED DQ4.. though I have heard it wasn't a good port (5 is good though) so I've been hesitant to try it but I don't want to sell it back because I want to give it a chance first. But I have already beaten it on the NES so it's not a pressing issue.

Now.. some games I didn't finish because of the nature of the game itself. Now the main game of Oblivion I've finished, I completed the main quest, rose to the top of all the factions except dark brotherhood (I murdered the guy who came to me in my sleep for his stuff instead), even did all the other side quests, bought a bunch of houses, finished knights of the nine, etc. But I haven't quite finished Shivering Isles yet.. I think I'm on building a new gatekeeper. But because it's all about building your own character and having somewhat of a sandbox environment, you'll probably never really "finish" a TES game. You'll just complete quests/quest lines.. maybe it'll be the central quest line but the game itself isn't done.. besides you can always roll a new class. Morrowind.. oh man I got lost in Morrowind for hundreds of hours and never came close to completing the main quest.. finished one of the expansions though.

But eventually.. new games come out.. you put down your current game for it for awhile. Or if you play MMO's.. that sucks a lot of game time out.

Biggest reason: it's just not very good.

Closely followed by loss of interest, "it's just like...", and repetitive.

I stop if I stop caring, due to no clearly stated long term goal (Bioshock was almost put away for this and I stopped playing Deadspace).
I also stop if a game is ridiculously hard, usually because of a new mechanic being introduced in the last fight or if there's unnavoidable moves.
