Just like the title says: So what's your dream career? Also, to put things in context, what's the job you're currently in? Are you already in that special career?

My dream career is to be a game designer. I'm currently only in high school (senior year) and I'm teaching myself 3D Modeling and Objective-C out of school (for app development, figure that's a good place to start learning) and learning Java in school. I'm real excited about getting into the industry.

The only job I've had was in the summer between my sophomore and junior years (missed the window for a job last summer). My older brother had worked in a moving company that mostly did packing, but occasionally did complete moves and even unpacking, so I worked there too. It paid relatively well for a first job, and I gained a huge level of respect for people who had manual labor jobs.

Your turn.

I am determined to convince someone to pay me to ride tigers in space while punching sharks.

...Not sure how I would make that work.

Or, maybe I could be the next Oprah.

Working as a 3d artist for games and movies.
Got 2 years left in one of the worlds best 3d graphics schools, and i'm doing great.
meanwhile, besides school, i work part time as evening security at a medical factory to pay the bills, been there for 4 years, 2 years while in school, and 2 years full-time with as many extra shifts as possible while saving up for school

As for the OP, if you're learnign 3d, learn more than modelling, my students counselor told me, that modelling and animation where the parts of the pipeline most people could do, so there were most competition for those parts of the industry. Rigging is again according to the student counselor at my school, one of the things most needed in the industry. But he said that beeing able to fill more than 1 spot in the pipeline would greatly increase your chance of landing a job, since you can fill out more then one job durring the production.

I've always wanted to be a profesional basketball player, but being white and not as athletic as all the guys that go into the NBA I lose out pretty bad but I am the perfect height to play point though. My realistic job in the future is going to be an Intel officer in the Air Force, barring flunking out of college.

That's awesome. Which school? I live on the southeast coast of the US, so my options for schools with game design majors are pretty limited. If only I lived out West...

Thanks for the advice. That's why I'm learning modeling, basic programming for Objective-C, Java, (I'm definitely going to try my hand at C++), I know techincal and creative writing, and I'm trying to improve my art skills. Everything works out because not only are these skills necessary for games, I just want to learn them anyway.

Sweet, a fellow writer. If I may ask, what's your book about?

Working as an industrial psychologist in the resource center of an interactive media company like the videogames industry.

I have it all worked out, it'll take me ten years. But it's my dream job, so it's worth it.

Truemax academy, it's a small school in copenhagen, denmark, northern europe. one of 2 3d schools worth it in my entire country, and the other one specializes in animation to my knowledge.

I can't do any of the things you've listed save for modelling, but then again, i'm aiming strictly at the 3d part. I'd guess (keyword beeing guess) that as a game designer, beeing able to fill several roles in a production will helps a lot as well, and knowing how o work with the different people in a production moreso.
Also, i'd guess beeing hired as game designer straight away is kind of a small chance, so having skills that can get you other jobs in the industry, letting you get some inside experience and contacts will probably be a major advantage.

Extra credits did an episode of "how to become a game designer" They know hwta they're talking about, i reccomend you check it out if you haven't already.

Games of course. Or film. Or something in music would be great, or even like some of the internet celebrities who aren't arrogant and take their life for granted. That would be great to work from home doing what you want to entertain people.

I want to make games, but not physically make them. Stories, character design that stuff are what interests me the most. I've got quite a few ideas now...

Computer programmer. Specifically, user experience expert specializing in making computers empower novice users. For now I think I'll disown power-users; they can find their own methods of using computers--the same way I use vim but wouldn't recommend it to say, my mother. I want to design and implement technology that gives the average person the power to do more with these fancy boxes and spend less time being frustrated and stressed out because of them.

I've heard that sometimes when they're stuck the bring people in from other parts of the company. Thats why I want to start in a position that most companies have, and then maybe offer up some ideas after a year or two.

God damn, even I could have done a better job leading the DA2 team.
