My favorite games would have to be a tie between VI and Tactics. Tactics introduced me to SRPGs and had a great battle system, as well as a really nice plot and good characters as well. VI just had great characters and really gave them their own personality, and I found myself liking them within an hour of meeting them. They also know exactly when to use comedy in a game, and they usually pull it off quite well. I loved Final Fantasy VII and still love it, but I recently tried to go back to it and it is just such a bore. I stopped before I even left Midgar, hopefully I can come back to it soon.
My least favorite would definitely be Final Fantasy II. The gameplay was just so horribly broken, the characters had the depth of a puddle, the dungeons were horrible, and the story was so plain. The dungeons actually had you choose between a number of doors, and only one of them lead to the next floor. The rest almost always led to empty rooms with huge encounter rates and much stronger enemies, so you'd have to start the dungeon over from the last save point sometimes because you just so happened to choose the wrong door. "EMPEROR TRYIN TO RULE DA WORLD CUZ HE BE EVIL AND STUFF" as a story may have worked back in the 20th century, but now it looks so dated. Final Fantasy VI may do this as well, but at least they offer a good plot twist halfway.
Admittedly, Final Fantasy II does have two good things. The antagonist and the music. When you kill Mateus, he actually goes to Hell, kills Satan and rules Hell, and his good side goes to Heaven and kills God. Even his good side is so wicked that he would kill God. That's so awesome.
