My favorite kind of enemy sort of falls under a trope. That trope is the Doppelganger, that one enemy that shares most, if not all, of the same traits that you yourself have in combat. Dark Link from the Legend of Zelda, the Canine Warriors from Okami, and especially the boutings of Dante and Vergil in Devil May Cry.

It's funny, my first real experience with that kind of enemy was in Kirby's Adventure, on the NES, when I learned that King Dedede does the same inhaling, spitting and inflating that Kirby's been using the whole time. It was really cool. Hey, I was seven, shut up.

I agree with this guy. Doppelgangers are cool to fight.

you just gotta love grunts man, they say the funniest things... and are totally random, they'll run, come towards you, throw a grenade... there should have been some kinda uber-grunt with shields and such and as high as the brutes, trust me, won't have been as easy.....

if by enemy we mean enemy type... then every male monster in Prince of Persia:Warrior Within, for some reason you can't vault over female enemies by jumping, they always hurt you bad :(
and shahdee made the usually mild-mannered prince swear and cry.... the first fight with shahdee : unforgettable.
here i am learning how to use the controls, the creeps have reduced my health to a little bit, and shahdee so much as touches the prince and he falls to the ground, dead.
the crow was also fun the first time over. in fact, the combat in Warrior Within was so fluid, not overpowered counter-instakills, it made fighting every monster fun, even that dog whose existence i have never quite been able to explain.
I quite liked the grunts. They were cannon fodder, but funny and entertaining.

Combat from POP:WW was also fun. It was a great improvement from the first. It was easy to pick up and fun for what it's worth. Too bad the story and character sucked bad.

Absolutely. They're tenacious opponents who make use of cover and high ground when they can. Because they, like you, possess regenerating shields, they can be absolute bastards to fight. They'll even grab vehicles you discard. Now, what WOULD be awesome is if they also took discarded weapons. So if you shoot the Grunt with the Fuel Rod Gun, the Elite should drop his Plasma Rifle and take that. And if you knock out a Jackal Sniper from range, the Elite commanding him should take his weapon and fire back, possibly being an even better shot than the Jackal. It's intelligence and versatility that make memorable enemies, I find, and at the time, none had the intelligence of the Elite.
That sounds like a wicked idea. It would make the game that much harder... which would be awesome. Though, didn't the Elites use the Carbine quite a bit, or am I just remembering the Arbiter?

Aye, enemies who emulate the player are indeed most interesting opponents. I far prefer them over generic hordes of gunmen with scripted actions, like almost every enemy in Half-Life 2. That's one of the reasons I enjoy Halo so much; Bungie combined scripted actions with AI that makes use of secondary weapons (grenades/equipment), cover, cannon fodder, and vehicles. Unfortunately, you only usually get one doppleganger duel a game (if that). My theory is that they're a pain to code as opposed to simpler opponents, so they don't use such intelligent/creative enemies as dopplegangers that often.

Uh, I think they did a bit, but it was only if they spawned with one when you loaded the map. I think they may have used turrets, though, if there was one nearby. Guess it counts as a vehicle.

...are [Nazis] fun to fight or fun to kill?
It really is appropriate to say, yes.
Fair enough, but what I really want to know is why it's enjoyable to fight these guys. I mean, if you took away the Nazi imagery and replaced it with a generic Stormtrooper skin, it'd play the same, wouldn't it? Yes, WWII was horrendous, but come on, guys. Is it really that fulfilling to fight the Germans again and again? I mean, it's pretty lazy writing to use Nazis as the enemy. Everyone's already set up to hate them, so they don't even have to give you a new reason to go killing hundreds of them... though, that having been said, the same can be said of zombies, demons, skeletons, and all sorts of enemies we're pretty much conditioned to see as hostile. Give me a new reason to want to shoot my enemy, damn it!

I usually enjoy fighting any epic creatures of myth, such as minotuars, griffins, demons, and MEHRUNES DAGON. If you completed the main quest for The Elder Scrolls 4 you would know how epic Mehrunes Dagon is, 100 foot tall satan anyone?

God they were annoying to fight in groups, especially after a boss fight when you had low health.

Add a nazi uniform and you've got the next big hit. The people on this forum are proof of it.

Either an enemy that attacks you in massive hordes (Serious Sam, anyone?) or an enemy that reacts logically.

Y'know, diving behind new cover should you undermine their last cover. Makes them all so much more gratifying to finally out-think and out-shoot them.

Also, the little aliens from Halo.
You mean those little infectionform Flood? They were good, actually. A big shift in atmosphere came when the Flood hit, and fighting the malign carpet that was the Infection Form was enjoyable. Until you played the level "The Library."

Another sort of enemy I like to fight is one that'll attack things that aren't just me. If there's a fight going on between NPCs, especially if both can/will turn on you at any time, I suddenly find myself with a plethora of options at my disposal. Stealthily and carefully help one side to take out the other, wait until they're both weak before acting, that sort of thing. And it's awesome to watch the ebb and flow of AI controlled battles. Assuming that it's decent AI, at least, who know how to do more than run and shoot (ie: Battlefront/Battlefield).

I love fighting creatures based on Deities from numerous mythologies. They are just so satisfying to beat.

My favourite kind of enemy is anything that dies spectacularly when you finish it off. The only thing more rewarding than destroying a large tank is when the detonation rips up a dozen more enemies.

My favorite had gotta be any enemy that dies from one shot put there's hundreds of them so you can basically pile up the corpses and make a little fort. So thats normally zombies/skeletons/most undead. That being said there is a certain satisfaction from shooting a nazi at close range with a shotgun.

Koopas from Mario, nothing more satisfying than using a corpse as a devastating weapon.

My favorite enemy would have to be any enemy from the original Sonic the hedgehog since they seem to have this glazed over look about them (my guess is either stoned or drunk) which would explain why they jus drift by in a laid back fashion.
