A little simple...

Pokemon

Seriously, the concept alone is kickass. Creatures with intelligence of a young child with super powers become best friends in a near future human world. On top of that, the environments are beautiful. Pokemon live with us in a mutual relationship. And our competitions rely on battles which 99% of the pokemon usually agree to.

Well, right now the answer is Journey. Cliched perhaps but I just picked it up last week so the impression is still extremely fresh in my mind.

Everything about the world in Journey is designed to evoke an emotion and tell a wordless story. The ruins of a fallen civilization. The machines that led to their destruction. The sands and snow that covered everything after the end. Every detail is crafted specifically to tell the story of times long past while evoking the wonder of the present.

Add that to the sheer joy of singing and dancing with the another stray pilgrim across this solemn landscape and you have the most evocative experience that an environment has given me in as long as I can remember.

Probably Morrowind. It was such a strange and alien world and it was so much fun just exploring aimlessly.

SimCity 4! (yes, I cheated) Who doesn't like to live in your own city?

Otherwise, DA, but only if I get to live in Hightown KW, or Denerim Hightown.

Not sure I could pick just one, certainly the zone, in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. quite a beautiful game, drips with atmosphere. Not even post apocalyptic but does the environment of post apocalypse better than games like Fallout 3. Speaking of post apocalyptic Metro 2033 and Last Light have a really great atmosphere as well, also a big fan of the book Metro 2033, haven't read 2034 yet, but as far as I know it still is not out in English. Have to agree with Morrowind as well, I played that game for entire year exclusively when it released I was an addict.

Lore-wise? The Mass Effect series is up there. Vast worlds, diverse planets to see, unique characters with insight into different cultures, etc.

Visually and creativity-wise? Maybe Psychonauts.
A summer camp for psychics with a vast number of colorful projected worlds within the strange minds of those who live there?

I'm all over that.

Pokemon: a crap-saccarrine world if you stop to think about it for a second. I imagine that if all, instead of just a paltry few, of the Pokedex entries were incorporated into the gameplay, it'd be be survival-horror JRPG instead.

Okami: the world is a sumi-e painting that you, as the sun goddess and mother to all, get to use as a canvas to beautify and breathe life into with the stroke of your Celestial brush tail.

The World Ends With You: a different dimensional plane where you play games in your hometown as a dead kid with your chance of life as the prize and failure is erasure from existence.

Kingdom Hearts: different worlds to explore so you're bound to find at least one that strikes your fancy.

Persona: psychology that's fun and where being the most schizophrenic is actually the best thing combat and dating-wise.

Myst, because it is all of the worlds.

ALL OF THEM.

Seriously. I think it subscribes to multi-verse/infinite universe theories, which means that, if it's physically possible, it exists in the Myst world.

The stuff that we're actually shown is pretty mind-blowing, too. The first game alone gave us a forest growing out of a massive lake strung with treehouses, a ship that suffered a materialization accident with a rock and a bizarre caldera in the middle of the ocean with assorted signs of civilization scattered over it, and by the time they got to game four, the level designs just got ludicrously good.

A realistic world? Props go to STALKER. So atmospheric and believable, even with anomalies and mutants around.

A mix of fantasy and realism? Morrowind, no doubt.

A fantasy? Planescape Torment, hands down. One of the best written games ever.

I usually prefer worlds that are quite open and involve exploration, doesn't hold your hand from start to finish.

Does it *have* to be a video game world? Because my favourite game world of all time is the Forgotten Realms, followed closely by Planescape. I still have all the old AD&D boxed sets in storage at my parents' house.

Chrono Trigger.

The world is just beautiful start to finish, it's got a great mixture of locations: from the millennial fair to the dino-fortress of 65 000 000 BC. It's utterly jaw-dropping at times the way you can see the effects of the passage of time on this world and it's inhabitants and the 10+ different endings that often leave you really thinking about how you changed the world around you.

It's also got hands-down my favorite location in a game. The flying kingdom of Zeal.

Oddworld (before Munch's Oddysee)

As I said many times before, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is what got me into gaming. And it's precisely because of its imaginative universe. The first time I laid eyes on it it was like seeing a Jim Henson movie on crack. It was at that point that I realized games could give me an experience movies never could.

It's cartoony yet grounded and dark. It's industrial yet mystical.

Favorite gaming world? Easy...

Deadlands. The Weird West of Deadlands, a spagetti western with meat.

Well, the topic said "gaming world." But if you meant specifically VIDEO game world, well that's a tougher decision. I love the United States (well and London in one game) of Grand Theft Auto. They don't really showcase it, but if you pay attention (especially if you listen to the talk radio stations) there's a fairly rich and detailed world. But it's just as easy to say I love Hyrule, I've been playing Zelda games for so long. I like the fictional world that Metal Gear happens in. I love Nirn and Tamriel and have played Elder Scrolls since the days of Daggerfall. I like the alternate history of Command and Conquer Red Alert (or "What if Einstein invented a time machine and killed a young Hitler.")

There's just so many.

Games don't really have to "worldbuild" to create good atmosphere. But it helps. And so many of the mentioned worlds are good for completely differing reasons. Dishonored's Dunwall creates a world with great visuals and enticing details that really make you want to find out more about this world you are in. But the wasteland of Fallout is just as good a world because it really exists only as a framework for someone to create their own narrative in. Several game worlds are already established works of fiction. One example, Star Wars, has great games (and some not so great ones) happening in a world (or universe) the player is already familiar with.

So coming up with a favorite is pretty hard. I'll go with simply the most pure fun and say the GTAverse.

I'm gonna go with Dragon Age. Easily my favorite lore. Not saying I'd want to live there or anything... But I certainly fell in love with it. I loved it soo much that the first time I played Dragon Age II, I liked it. A lot.

I was blinded.

Oooh, can we pick player-created worlds? Because the EvE universe is up there with the greatest social experiments of our generation. Even though I don't play the game anymore. Not nearly cutthroat enough.

Other than that, the Mass Effect universe is pretty cool; I like technobabble and pseudo-science.
