Starfleet ships tend to look pretty impractical, but I still like the so-called Jeffries design. And although it doesn't quite fit the archetypal shape, I always thought the U.S.S. Defiant was badass.

Also, the ships on Babylon 5 were usually great looking. The Earth warships, the White Stars, the Vorlons... And the Shadow vessels are just cool as hell.

Both of mine are Star Trek related as I was a huge trekkie growing up. And oddly enough both are related to each other.

The first is the Borg Cube

There was just something so cool about seeing that thing, no differentiation in the hull, just his massive geometric object that was 100+x the size of the Enterprise-D the largest ship in Starfleet. It showed that the Borg was a race that didn't care about aesthetics or even identifying features... it was a ship meant to fly through space with singular purpose and it used to terrify me as a kid.

The second is the design of Commander Benjamin Sisko, a ship designed to destroy the Borg that had taken his wife from him and left a whole in his life. The USS Ben Sisko's Mother F'ing Pimp Hand... er I mean the USS Defiant.

I just love the slick design and the small compact shape of it. It's the type of thing that just screams "I'm hear for one thing... to kick your ass and make you like it! I mean the thing is practically just a set of pulse phasers and quantum torpedo launchers strapped to a set of engines. It lacks all the comforts of modern Starfleet ships and even lacks the nacelles, secondary hull, saucer aesthetic that every other Starfleet ship has, it just screams "This ship is like nothing you've ever seen before from Starfleet."

I always liked the look of UNSC ships. Though these days I'm a Normandy Man.

UNSC Frigates are really cool. I love the design.

If you like Halo designs, you'll probably like their inspiration.

The USS Sulaco

Even the Pillar of Autumn is an obvious homage to the USM Auriga from Alien Resurrection
You probably wouldn't like to live on one. They're just aircraft carriers in space.

Perfect timing considering the recent buzz about it, I would go with the X-Wing, the original of course. I love the design, I always loved using one in any games it was featured in since it usually is the balanced fighter of the rebel ships.

Not a big fan of the new design so far in VII, but after many years in the universe, you would expect them to redesign a ship anyway. Plus in the event the new movies suck, the original X-Wing will be untouched from the bad reputation the new films will bring. :p

Like a bunch of people before said, I have a soft spot for the USS Defiant from DS9. It was my go-to ship for any Star Trek game and my favorite ship to use in Star Trek Online.

I also like the Narada from Star Trek 2009

Its arrival and destruction in the movie is what I imagine what would happen if in a game of Call of Cthulhu, the players manage to take out one of the Outer Gods a la Old Man Henderson...minus a hockey stadium full of explosives. Its both the scale and the borderline assimilated eldritch horror aesthetic (in the prequel comic the ship was jacked up with reverse engineered Borg tech) that sells me. Volatile black hole goop be damned! Give the thing stuff other than future torpedoes for point defense, modify that mining laser so it can wipe a planet from orbit without having to hang from a tether, and some sort of internal manufacturing engine so it can't run out of torpedo ammo or spare parts and I'll make this thing my main method of conquest.

Seen a lot of love for the Defiant, but personally, I still love the refit version of the original Enterprise and Enterprise-A. I loved that ship so much, I remember how excited I was to find a book that dealt with its last adventure written by William Shatner himself.

A nod to Ryo-Ohki in the Tenchi universe. A ship with planet-killing power, that would never do so because it's a cute rabbit-cat thing.

But for me, a practical-ish sort of goal. I'd save up and buy an A-Wing. Speed and shields to keep you alive, not as much firepower as the X design, but with hardpoints loaded with concussion missiles... it's the bane of any TIE design.

Of course the best capital ship is the Errant Venture. The first time a private citizen managed to steal a Star Destroyer... and eventually managed to get enough red paint to paint it red. Wraith Squadron managed to steal an impressive number of Imperial ships... but they never got their hands on a whole Mk II Star Destroyer like the EV.

Edit: AAAGGHHHH how could I have forgotten the greatest ship ever... conjured from an exploit in probability (and some tea.) Who wouldn't want the Starship Heart of Gold.

A small thing that has always amused me. When I first saw the Star Wars movies, I always heard the pilots say "Luck as falls and attack positions." Yes, I know they actually say "Lock x-foils in attack positions" but that wasn't what I heard. Plus, knowing more than a few air force guys and their superstitions, it really seemed to fit for me.\

OT: I'm going to put in a vote for Babylon 5 ships. While they may not look as sexy as some other craft, the Starfury is built along very logical lines and is based off of JMS's understanding of physics.

An Abominator Picket Ship. In the words of the ship itself, "Fu-huh-zucking hellcocks I'm good."

I always liked the idea of living ships as in Peter F Hamilton's (somewhat obnoxious) Nights Dawn trilogy, where the ship and the ships captain had a mental connection and each ship had it's own personality and character. There weren't really any good illustrations for it, but this book cover visualises them pretty well I think.
Alastair Reynolds also has some interesting living ships... particularly one where the human captain got a technological melding virus and eventually melded with the ship, so the ship became his body... a creepy, physically twisted and distorted ship with a mind of it's own.

But my favorite growing up would probably be the Valkyre VF-1 from Macross(which I knew as Robotech), or the Macross itself if that doesn't count.

And grown up, I too love the Culture GSVs, like so many in this thread. :)

Sounds interesting, which book would that be?

Revelation Space series... especially part 3 and 4, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap.

Wait. "Lock x-foils in attack positions" is what they say? By god almighty, this is the first time someone has ever pointed this out to me. I heard it exactly the same way you did.

Oh well, that's one less thing to worry about now in life. A cookie for you, good poster!

Lets see...

Enterprise Models C to E (basically same outer design). I loved The Next Generation as a child and it imprinted itself onto my brain. Beautiful design and home to awesome stories.

Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - need I say more?

Battlestar Galactica interceptors - the original one, same reason.

Basically all of the Sins of the Solar Empire design but especially TEC ships, they are just like one of my another favorite

Nostromo from Alien. Simply gorgeous. 'Nuff said.

Earth Alliance warships of Babylon 5: Nice, utilitarian and look like they belong in space.

Also love the Shadow Battlecrab, especially for it's odd way of moving, it essentially moves in any direction is wants to and doesn't have a front or back, the ship just drifts and spins where ever it wants to, makes it very eery and otherworldly.

I've always had a place in my heart for the U.S.S Sulaco. Probably because Aliens is one of, if not my top, favorite movie of all time but also because it sort of looks like a futuristic assault rifle.
