Space: Above and Beyond easily takes home #1 for me, with Firefly #2. Since it's not well known (it aired late at night in 1996 despite it's inferior and slightly retarded cousin Babylon 5 airing earlier in the evening) I'll link the intro in case it rings a bell for those who may have caught 1 episode once:

As for currently airing? Hmm, television these days are pretty crappy*. I guess I'm going to have to go with The IT Crowd, Castle or My Little Pony: FIM. (can't choose)

*I mean really, when a show like Fringe, which is essentially X-files translated into stoopid, or the Mentalist can run for more than a season before someone puts it down, then you know producers and executives are high as f***!
The IT Crowd is no longer airing, it has been finished.

That is all.

It'd have to be The Unit, Jericho and Game of Thrones.
As for what's currently airing The Big Bang Theory, How I Met your mother.
Honourable mention to Falling Skies.

Breaking Bad is rather wonderful, and Game of Thrones is just glorious. I had mad fun watching the Stargate franchise (Love all things Stargate) but the one show that has managed to carve out a piece of my heart and slowly begin to grow and fester...is Dexter. There is just something about that show that I fucking love.

HERESEY! Babylon 5 was the dogs bollocks!

MOOOLLLLAARRIIIII!

Incidentally, I watched Space: Above and Beyond again recently and, really, some of the episodes are pretty dire. All the ones with replicants and any that involved wossname protagonist's missing bird were utter garbage.

Yeah sure, if you're into soap operas like Dallas, Eastenders and Bold & the Beautiful, Babylon 5 should be right up your alley. But transporting the plot and cast of Eastenders into space and giving them costumes is not enough to call it sci-fi. I find that show one of the most offensive I've seen.

Replicants? Missing bird? You are full of shit.
No way dawg, I is for rizzle:

They were called sillicates though, not replicants. My bad.

Also the show started with wossname protagonists bird's colony getting murderised by jackbooted chigs and his was the overarching story of the series.

The nipple necks were awesome though. Really enjoyed their stories.

Now to tackle your baseless and bizarre criticism of B5: JR did not return from Z'ha'dum and Ivanova never got preggers with G'Kar's lovechild. I'll bet the writers of Eastenders couldn't even spell the word 'unrequited'.

I honestly have no idea what I'd consider favorite of all time as I love many different shows for very different reasons but any list would have to include the following:

Battlestar Galactica
Yes (Prime) Minister
The Thick of it
Red Dwarf
The West Wing
Black Books

All of them amazing shows that I think everyone should watch.

Edit: And yet 30rock didn't make my list inspite of my avatar (I love jack, not the show)

Currently airing? Fringe (final season in a few weeks!). And if can they can manage to end it well it will likely end up in my top three of all time. Just a really well done modern sci-fi. John Noble is god.
Oh and of course 'Breaking Bad'. I'd say Fringe and Breaking Bad are on equal footing in their respective genres.
Community also gets some props.

All time? Tough. I'm inclined to say Batman TAS. Though the Stargate's are not far behind (SG-1 and Atlantis, Universe can go die in a fire).

The Simpsons. They're funny, they've got lovable characters, and they managed to make me love the characters so much that I can name over one hundred of them just like that.

For me it's a tie between Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire. Both amazing drama series produced by HBO, both stuffed with all kinds of interesting stories, setpieces, characters and great actors to play them.

I enjoy a lot of other shows as well, but to me, none has reached the level of the above two shows.

TV shows encompass a lot... so... (not including anime, here)

Panel game - QI
Satire - Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister
Comedy - Scrubs
Police procedural - Castle
Sci-fi - FlashForward (right up until it got freakin' cancelled)
Mini-series - UltraViolet

And I'd add that BBC 1995 adaptation of... a certain book, but it's just too shameful!
agree about flash forward i loved it

All TNG-era Star Trek shows. It's almost ritual to watch Star Trek before dinner. Married with Children is still my favorite sitcom.

I've always thought that the wire was the BEST show on TV even if it is't my favorite. The acting and the writing are both phenomenal. The story arcs across seasons and across the whole series are satisfying while still completely plausible. And by most accounts, the microcosms of a city (the news media industry, public education, the drug trade, shipping ports, political bureaucracy, police department management) that are focused on in each season are represented very realistically.

That said (and I was disappointed to be the first to mention it) Trailer Park Boys is my favorite show ever. Many people just look at the title or watch the show for 15 minutes and mistake it for traditional american pseudo-reality trash about vulgarity for vulgarity's sake. TPB is anything but. The excellent job the actors do of appearing to be not acting (to clarify, good acting like in, say, The Wire or The Dark knight is very enjoyable to watch but is also instantly distinguishable from real life behavior) has fooled people I know into thinking it is an actual reality show. Underneath the brashness though, the real story is about a strong community and people who love each other unconditionally despite their handicap of being immature, reactionary, and ignorant. The show also approaches issues like unconventional family situations, sexuality, and animal rights with a nonchalance and subtlety you just don't see in American TV. I rewatch the whole series on roughly a monthly basis because whenever I have to spend more than 5 minutes picking a show, i usually just pick TPB. Everyone should watch it. Stepping off my soapbox now.

Starget SG-1 and Atlantis (I tend to lump them together because they follow the same continuity with many of the same characters, events, and locations) are also very near and dear to my heart. There is nothing quite like getting invested in a series and then having 15 long seasons to watch.

So many Stargate fans (unsurprisingly). Going to hijack my thread. *Ahem* What is your favorite episode? I have many favorites, but one still stands above them all: Window of Opportunity [http://www.gateworld.net/sg1/s4/406.shtml]

@Frontastic: Universe already died in a fire; wannabe Battlestar Galactica. Lets never speak of Universe again and pray for a worthy sequel to SG-1/Atlantis.
