There have been quite few versions:

Classic Megaman
Megaman X
Megaman Legends
Megaman Battle Network
Megaman and Bass
Megaman Zero
Megaman ZX
Megaman Star Force

For me, The Zero series and Battle Network games were pretty entertaining

Edit: Capcom can go die in a fire for ending Megaman

In order of most favorite to least (though that's not to say I don't like them):

-Mega Man X 1-5
-Mega Man 1-5 (still need to try 8 and 9)
-Legends
-Zero
-Battle Network 1-3

Haven't played the others so I can't comment on them. Though it just seems like after the 4th or 5 installment of a given series, it starts going to shit or becomes kind of redundant. Ok...it becomes even more redundant I should say, since the iterations in any given series are almost always the same with minor changes similar to CoD and whatnot.

I wan't more Mega Man games that play Like Legends though. That is what Mega Man should have evolved into but it never took off sadly. The third person gameplay, extensive customizable character/weapon options, vast explorable levels ect...I would kill for a Mega Man X game in the Legends gameplay format with a few added improvements. Closest we got were the Battle Network games, which were pretty fun and engaging games, but Legends format is definitely my ideal view.

My favorite is Classic.

I'd also have to mostly agree with Seraph; Megaman ought to have taken off into Metroidvania territory but never did.

Zero > X > Original > ZX. Never played any of the others.

I didn't like ZX that much because my character felt gimped. Model ZX doesn't have all of the sweet EX attacks like in the Zero series, Model X doesn't get any cool boss weapons, etc. Having to run around looking for your next mission was also a pain in the ass.

Mega Man X followed very closely by MegaMan.EXE

I never got around to playing Star Force, and I wasn't too fond of the original series.

Megaman Battle Network. I've played quite a few of them but the Battle Network series is the only one I've really played over a long period of time. If I remember the last few weren't that great though. (I think they changed the battle perspective to behind the character rather than side on?)

Legends is my favorite with x at a distant second and the original series in third; everything else is just a speck on the horizon.

In all honesty, though; I haven't liked any megaman games since the playstation generation of consoles; awful shame, too, as the series as a whole is one of my all time favorites.

Battle Network, on account of it being the only one that I played. Shame that I lost it, those damn cartridges are so small.

Megaman X hands down. Not only was it the very first exposure to Megaman I had as a kid. On the SNES no less. But it was just plain awesome to boot. X and Zero were kickass, and I still remember just how much of a bastard Sigma was to finally beat.

After that would probably come Zero. Unfortunately, I only played the 4th installation in that series, but I did really like Zero's re-design in addition to the other mechanics added.

Then Battle Network. Again, I only played the last installment, but the battle system and story were great. And it had one of the most catchy instrumental songs to kick ass to.

A little repetitive, but like I said above it is damn catchy and I really enjoy it!

I've never played any of the others on the list, unfortunately.

I'm not the biggest mega man fan but I was shocked at how good mega man x 4 was. I played 5 thinking it would compare but it did not in the least and I immediately lost interest.

The original, X, and ZX were my favorites. No real preference between them; they all have their merits, though most of X and ZX have had pretty weak soundtracks. I also didn't care for Mega Man 8 or Mega Man and Bass, the latter of which was just a spin off of the original series and doesn't really deserve its own designation, by the way. Never played Mega Man 9 or 10, but I thought taking Rock's slide and charge shot away was a stupid idea. You don't take a step back in the gameplay department and call it a sequel, people.

Battle Network was alright. Zero, Legends, and Star Force can jump off a damn cliff.

They did that twice, in the ZX games.
