Border collies are the win. Smartest breed of dog there is, and in my opinion the cutest.

Then again I have one downstairs so I could be slightly biased.
Finally, someone else for the Border Collie!

Pit Bulls.

Loving-est dogs on the planet. They get such a bad rep.

I've known a couple dozen of them over the years. Out of those, I would consider two to fit their undeserved stereotype.
Yeah, American Pitbull Terrier. Definitely my favorite.

I have 2 pure-breed black labradors and they're why labs are my favourite breed, though they both are complete contrasts to each other.
The big one is pretty smart, I mean I don't know anyone else's standard for smart pets but this one can 1.open doors by himself and once actually closed it
2. can wake me up, lead me downstairs and into the kitchen for me to feed him breakfast(this has only happened twice though) and
3.finally he sleeps on MY BED if I'm not in it before roughly 11 o'clock(again, pretty rare).

though the smaller one is a complete idiot and I wouldn't have him any other way for example
1.he sometimes walks into walls without the other one with him.
2.once tried number 2 of the smart dog's list but instead fell down the stairs and probably farted in my room(at the time i didn't even KNOW dogs could fart)
3. whenever I play catch with the two of them the smart one will try to get it before the ball hits the ground but the small one will wait until it hit's the ground and sometimes ithit's him on the head and he doesn't even FLINCH

Personally I like mongrels the best, the scruffier the better.
As for actuall breeds I really love Huskies, they're amazing animals, wouldn't have nearly enough time and space to take care of one though.

If you've got a problem with those choices, Alsatian.

Somewhere, I have a bag of those for removing make up.

Additions to above list: Berner and Husky are also lovely, but a 125lb 6-month-old Berner puppy is a bit much for some people to handle. You need a green belt in Jiu Jitsu just to say hello.

Golden retrievers. I'm petting one with my feet as I type, and it just rolled over and snorted.

I've got a Corgi that I can't believe I ever lived without. It's all the big dog personality in an apartment-sized and adorably silly body. Love 'em, love 'em, love 'em.

WE have a mutt, and he's wonderful. He's an amalgamation of several things, and he looks like a huge furry yellow lab, but thicker and hairier. He's incredibly intelligent, so much so tha the knows how to open doorknobs and sliding glass doors.

Welsh Corgis- preferably Pembroke. They're cute, smart. The whole package.

Bull Terriers!

I have had 2 and love them to death even if they are crazy as hell.
I wish I had a picture of mine to put up, she steals my shoes and tries to wear them.
