Undecided between

Go with the Wolfhound for sheer impressiveness. While not actually descended from the warhounds of the middle ages where the hounds were used to haul men off the backs of horses in battle...
They're pretty damn awesome.
Never owned one myself, but I've always found them very relaxed, easy going dogs.

My absolute favourite is German Shepard, though.
I'm biased because I have one, though :p

They're loyal, alert, intelligent, vigilant, unlikely to wander off and they just look so damn good. Cleaning up the dog hair can be annoying alright, but every breed has its foibles :p

Ok, this thread is making me want to pet my dog now... so I will.

Dachshunds. They may be absolutely stupid, irritating to house train, and bark constantly...but dach puppies are the cutest. About half of my extended family either has them or raises them. Overload on the fweny-dawgs.

I'm also fond of corgis. Big dog in a small bulls-obey-me-because-they-can't-kick-me-hahaha body. And the ears. Who can resist the ears? The guy who owns my local feed store has a couple who run his cattle. XD

My grandparents had dalmatians for the longest time. Some of them were older then me. Ah, the memories of being a kid and getting slammed on my bum by their tails. -^___^-

Huskies, if you get them as a puppy and train them, I'm sure are dream dogs. I have a friend who has a husky-mutt that she adores. However, getting a year-old husky that hasn't had an ounce of discipline...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!! *rips out hair*

If I had the time and know-how, I would so get a border collie and train it to herd my goats.

I can't pick one, that's crazy-talk!

In no particular order:
Corgis
Amiercan Eskimos
Alaskan Malamutes
Pit Bulls
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
Shelties

(But I suppose if I absolutely had to pick, Corgis. They're squeal-aloud cute.)

A German Shepherd saved my life from a mountain lion. Same German Shepherd dragged my half drowned ass out of a raging river. Also lead me home when I got lost in the woods and fell into a sink hole.

German Shepherds have my vote.

A Hermit's Cave
Once again... necro'd by a spambot...!?

Buuuuuuuuuut in keeping with the previous 2 posters... German Shepherds. An elegant breed with an air of discipline about them... though my one had an air of superiority, perhaps justified, though.

Beagles are my favorite.
I totally thought that said "Bagels". Need morning coffee. >_>;

My favorite breed is the Great Dane, I had one growing up and he was a big (and I do mean big) ball of love.

Chocolate lab for scale.

His neck is probably close to the size of my waist in this one.

Any type of huge breed, but I have a special preference to King German Shepherds and Newfoundlands. They are huge fluffy monsters of love <3

I have two pure bred Siberian Huskies. They get waaaaaaaay to much attention when we go out. Now that I've started mushing them Urban style, they get even more attention. But everything you heard about them is true, they are a stubborn breed and have crazy personalities and fart a lot. If I knew how to do the coding, I'd share pictures. Alas, you'll have to take my word that they are adorable and much cuter than I. ;)

Probably a mixed-heritage mutt with alsatian colours, collie size, a good immune system, a gentle temperament, no health problems and an IQ of at least 150 by dog standards.

Single breeds?

European Wolf [http://www.testriffic.com/resultfiles/175190-Wolf-001-wall-(1024x768).jpg] and Ethiopian Wolf [http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_--uX6KPhHpQ/TPp7XmCLEgI/AAAAAAAAAfQ/GEKrdjwlLq0/s1600/EW.2.jpg].

Not allowed wolves?

Alsatian [http://www.mediastorehouse.com/dog_german_shepherd_alsatian_drinking_from_stream/print/1453303.html] then probably Shetland Sheepdog [http://www.conferenceofbirds.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Race-dog-and-Shetland-sheepdog.jpg] and Husky [http://www.dogbreedpicture.net/dog-image-s-610-siberian-husky-504-siberian-husky-aq.jpg-4396.htm]. Anyone who's been to the Shetlands at enough times of year will understand that fur coat.

If you're looking for huge and cuddly, check out the Berner Berghund, aka Bernese Mountain Dog. One site said some males grow to 130lb. This one [http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/bernesemountain.htm] only goes as far as:
Height: Dogs 24-28 inches (61-71cm.) Bitches 23-27 inches (58-69cm.)
Weight: Dogs 85-110 pounds (38-50kg.) Bitches 80-105 pounds (36-48kg.)
Don't expect to wrestle with one using only one finger, huh?

Readers with analytical minds may reasonably conclude that I prefer the breeds for which the question is how many it takes to drive away a bear, not how many a bear can eat in one hour.
