In every single version of this topic I propagate my love for the WoW soundtrack, and I will do that again. Heavens Blizzard did some brilliant work. I thought it already was fantastic in Vanilla, then Outlands came along and blew me away. But good gods, Northrend was the absolute crown on their work. Just listen to these:
But even though Northrend is so stunning, Outland had some great work as well:
But lets not forget vanilla WoW:
Ok that's enough, as you can see, I really really really love WoW's music. Like, a lot. Heej you asked mister OP.

Dammit, people have already said Morrowind. Nevermind, I second them.

Special mention I think should go to the GTA games though, the radio stations are entertaining :)

the Final Fantasy 6 soundtrack is probably my favourite. Especially after hearing it made by a symphony orchestra ;D

I have to say Timesplitters, the whole series. It's funky electronica is just pitch perfect.

To illustrate my point, the main menu themes from all of the games.

Not to mention perhaps the only game song that actually surpasses the thing it's paying homage to.

Damn you Furburt i was going to post that exact song

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Halo theme.
For me that was the only part of the game that was truely extraordinary.

Other than that I have to give a major /agree to Cowabungaa for mentioning the World of Warcraft music and add on a mention of Blizzard's games' music in general.

But of course none of it compares to what is in my eyes the greatest video game song of all time:

the portal theme is good but after a while it just gets plain annoying

Contributing to this list:

I think the actual in-game version of this song is better, but this probably in my list of top 5 greatest songs ever made (the in-game version, not this one, the ashenvale/eversong forest tune)

It's the first song on my official unnofficial "make me happy" CD with a bunch of foreign (to the USA) stuff and I haven't gotten sick of it after probably 500+ listenings. Then again I'm one of those mutant freaks who genuinely enjoys Daler Mehndi.

OT: Damn it Cowabungaa that was like beating a guy walking out of an AA meeting over the head with a 5th of Jack. SW:TOR needs to come out so I can get my MMO fix or the shakes are going to start...

Ah yes, the Night Elves have some brilliant music. The ingame version would be this one:
I will always remember my very first character ever, a NE rogue on a private server. I was blown away by the splendor of Teldrassil.
Godsdammit I want to go back now...

You're welcome. If it means anything, it pains me just as much. Especially as I've got several people asking me to join their server. I might actually give in, I won't raid anyway.

I thought Jeremy Soule actually topped himself with Oblivion, and prefer (narrowly) that soundtrack to Morrowind's. As with most discussion of those two games, which one I like better is largely dependent on which one I've played most recently.

Honorable mention to Blaster Master and Faxanadu for pushing some seriously limited hardware into amazing musical territory.

And if we're including licensed music, Fallout 3 and FIFA 2004 belong in the discussion.

The only difference being, of course, that WoW has full orchestrated songs whilst Runescape has to do with bleeps and bloops. Given though, for simple bleeps and bloops, Runescape's music is rather atmospheric. Pretty damn good for a browser game.

Besides Portal I have always loved the soundtrack to Ocarina of Time, it may not be orchestrated but it is amazing. Oh and also an honorable mention to Half-Life 2, the fact that music is limited and only used at opportune moments is one of the best uses of music.

You used to be able to download all the timesplitters soundtracks from the FreeRadical website... but seeing as crytek took em over, they have taken the website down :(
