Are we basing GOTY on games actually released this year? Or games that we ourselves played this year? Because I generally don't play any new release games, so I'm always a few years behind the curve on that front.

Reading the thread posts, did no one ( myself included) buy any games this year? Holy shit.

The only game i bought this year is Street fighter 5, enter the gungeon and salt and sanctuary. So since i refuse to give personal Gott status to indie games, i vote Street fighter 5. I have hundreds of hours on it. And will rack up even more now that Ibuki has been released.

Game of the year, implies the game of the current year, being 2016. How is this so hard to grasp? Even the OPs picks imply as much. I mean really guys, if you want a " what's the best game you've played this year" thread make one geez.

Dark Souls 3 for sure. Pretty decent year all around so far. Would be better if Persona 5 was coming out this year though :/

Looking forward to Legion next.

Like many other people already, I haven't played... hardly any games that actually came out in 2016.

Darkest Dungeon and Grim Dawn had their official releases this year, so that's two I guess. Then there's Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth... and I think that's mostly it? I don't know if I'd really rank any of those games above or below each other, though Cyber Sleuth has a pretty hilariously bad translation.

If we take into account games that I want to play or play more of then there is Salt and Sanctuary, Hyper Light Drifter, Kirby: Planet Robobot, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, Total War: Warhammer, Dark Souls III, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada, The Banner Saga 2, Bravely Second, Stories: The Path of Destinies, Monster Hunter Generations, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Steins;Gate 0, Persona 5(?), Final Fantasy XV, Dishonored 2, maybe Pokemon, Divinity: Original Sin 2, and Kingdom Hearts 2.8 (shouldn't care, especially since I don't even have a PS4, but it's Kingdom Hearts...)

So that's quite a few, but I can't afford pretty much any of them and pretty soon I won't have the time for them either.

As for games that I've only just played this year, so far it'd go to Life Is Strange with Batman: Arkham Knight as a runner-up.

It has to be Uncharted 4, a fine send of for Nathan Drake and crew and a lot of fun to play.

However, thinking about it, that is the only game I've played that has been released this year. Everything else I want to play keeps getting delayed.

Umm.. I think I'd have to say Doom for me. It was really surprising to me how much I enjoyed it and it scratched that fast paced shooter itch I've had for a while. Dark Souls 3 was good but I just don't feel any compulsion to play it anymore. DS1 gave me many repeat playthroughs but DS3 just didn't pull me in.

Have to agree that Arkham Knight is a great game. I stayed away from it because of the poor PC version but now it's in a verry playable state and I picked it up for cheap. I had an absolute blast and I thought the story was really well done. Arkham Knight and Arkham Asylum are my two favorites for sure.

Side note: I bought Cod2 and Dishonored during the Steam sale and it's they're just as good as I remember. My GOT so far for 2016 might be old releases.

I'd say Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (visuals), Xenoblade Chronicles X (scope), and Doom (gameplay) are the best things I've played this year. I know Xenoblade came out at the tail end of 2015 but the game had so much content it was near impossible to beat before the year was up.

Yeah, I just got it in the recent Steam sale and I've been really digging it. It has been less stable than Asylum or City, but at the same time it's pretty much everything I actually wanted following on after originally beating Arkham City. My one major complaint so far would just be the move away from the Metroidvania-esque "dungeon" areas they had.

I do also have The Witcher 3 to dig into, but with the number of RPGs I have and the rate I play through them, it'll be 2018 by the time I actually get around to that.

Stardew Valley released this year right?
Uncharted 4 had bland combat and way too many climbing segments
Overwaifu is cool but there's not much more to it
DOOM... I don't know what the big deal is, go into a room kill everything and rinse repeat. I don't really like FPS anyway
Street fighter 5 is as unfinished as it is disappointing

so yeah I guess GOTY so far goes to Mighty No.9... hey, it's better than nothing

Because not everyone uses that term to mean the same thing. Geez, why is that so hard to grasp? And since he said what is YOUR game of the year, for ME, that would be games from LAST YEAR or BEFORE. And I don't want to make a game played this year thread, as you so snidely suggest. I was simply asking for clarification from the OP, how is this so hard to grasp?

I know what you mean. I do miss the exploration and gadget progression from Asylum. Other than that, I feel like AK finally gave me a game that felt like the complete Batman experience. Tank battles aside (that I didn't think were as bad as people claimed) having the car and the whole city to travel in combined with the story about Batman and his family gave me all kinds of tingles.

I got Blood and Wine during the sale even though I have no idea when I'll be able to get around to it. I guess you and I have the same first world problems haha.

I was convinced Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam came out this year but apparently it came out in December 2015...oh wait...most of the world got it then but here in America, it IS a 2016! Awesome I have something for this list! What else came out this year...? Oh hey Pony Island! That was a pretty damn good game. Twilight Princess HD is good...but great...I need to get around to finishing it. Star Fox Zero was a disappointment for me. Mini-Mario & Friends Amiibo Challenge was actually pretty decent. My Girlfriend hasn't given me a chance to play Robobot yet...and Tokyo Mirage Sessions has been taking most of my free time recently.

I guess as of right now, my handheld GotY is Paper Jam (I would say it's the best game to feature Paper Mario since Thousand Year Door)
my console GotY is Tokyo Mirage Session Pound-sign Feh (I'm on Chapter 3 and it looks like the boss is going to be Kogure-sama...or Krauzer, the front-man of DMC. Still waiting for my Dir en Grey cameo)
and on PC I guess Pony Island. Though my most played PC game this year has probably been Huniepop. I love me some match-3 action and now that I have Ironcast I can move on to that.

Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator. Most beautiful game ever and an amazingly intense fighter that comes with an actually long storymode that concludes plot points that had been open for over a decade.

I really like the Batmobile, though I'll accept that Riddler putting up a bunch of races is thematically a bit questionable (though, in fairness, I have a hard time thinking of any Batman villain that would justify those segments).

But yeah, even more than Arkham City it really feels like you just get to be Batman. The only way I could think of a more awesome Batman simulator would be to rip off a suggestion I saw somebody make in a comment once, where it's the entirety of Gotham (as even Knight is relatively limited once you see the scope of how much is actually modeled in the game vs. how much is accessible) with a day/night cycle that allows you to swap between being Bruce Wayne and Batman. Add in a flyable Batwing and have a lot more infiltration/detective work stuff, along with all of the Bruce Wayne things you'd do, and just... welp, it's probably far more ambitious than any Batman game we're ever going to get. XD

I'm so far behind that I haven't even beaten the first Witcher game yet. I might just drop everything to go right for 3 and then retroactively play the other two at a later point in the future, because I do like them even for all of their jank.

Like other probably DS3, not that its particularly amazing but its a fun game I enjoyed it more than any other 2016 game. Maybe overwatch would be a contender, but my group of friend play battleborn instead and I don't feel like playing both at the same time. XCOM 2 was also great and similarly to DS 3 is just mostly more of the same, but XCOM 1 (cris I hate naming sequel like its was the first one in a series) had a lot of small problem (lack of interesting end game, no interesting choice in weapon) and XCOM 2 fixed none of them so that brought it a bit down in my mind.

Game I enjoyed the most this year is underrail, if you want to play some old school fallout 1 and 2 stuff check it out.

I think this year P5 should be a strong contender, maybe FF15 if a miracle happen and SE manage to get there head out of there ass. Civ 6 is also out this year, but civ at release are generally feature poor so I doubt it'll be my GOTY, but once it has one or two expansion it should rank up there.

Yeah, the exact same for me. Both great games, but I think I prefer Grim Dawn. Any Diablo (1 or 2) fan should give it a try.

Burning Blood was in the running until they patched it in a weird way so now instead of a B2 average rank I'm a C3. What did they actually do to Smo-Yan?

Either FF15 or No Man's Sky. Or one of the late, end-of-the-year-for-Christmas games I'm/we're not aware of yet. Thanks for reminding me what a shitty year it's been for my fastly fading favorite hobby.

I'd just recommend it to any isometric ARPG fan. I've never been shy about admitting that I'm a huge fan of Diablo III and could never really get into Diablo II, and Grim Dawn is the only other one that's ever held my interest as effectively.
