As of right now, if I had to pick one that I've finished, it would be Journey.

If I could pick a potential one based on what I've played so far, Dishonored takes the cake.

And if I can pick one that I'm hyped up for, then I'll be getting a Vita on Tuesday and picking up Gravity Rush with it.

Honorable mentions go to Dark Souls on PC, Mass Effect 3, Mark of the Ninja, and Borderlands 2.

Okami HD would be listed, but I don't feel I'd be justified in putting up a game that's six years old, no matter how amazing it may be.

Guild Wars 2, it's pretty much the only game I've put any time into above the bare minimum, the only other games I currently put time into are Skyrim and Civ V, but those are from last year, both games I logged 200+ hours into.

EDIT:

Don't people think The Walking Dead is the last word in casual gamer dope?
Yeah, for whatever reason it didn't even cross my mind, but it's definitely a highlight of the year. It's so much more of a story/experience that I barely registered it as a game.

I am going to have to go with Dishonored, Mass Effect 3, Guild Wars 2, or XCOM: Enemy Unknown for Game Of The Year. They are all great games that I have immensely enjoyed. If I had to pick one though it would have to be Dishonored.

Dishonored, probably. It's the only game released this year that I was interested in enough to shell out the cash for it. Unless Mists of Pandaria counts, which I don't consider it to because it's an expansion.

Out of the games I've played this year so far... probably either Mass Effect 3 or Torchlight 2. I haven't really gotten many new games this year since I've been out of work with a knee injury for a while and don't really have any money coming in.

There is no perfect candidate this year, but I would put my vote on Xcom:EU or Journey. I would have given it to Catherine cause I loved that game but it flipped out so completely towards the end that I was kinda put off by it.

So far this year I am probably going to have to say Journey. I just recently played it and it was the best experience I've had with a game all year. I'm almost finished Spec Ops: The Line so that could change as that game is amazing so far.

I enjoyed Mass Effect 3 (didnt care for the ending but I dont think it ruined the game) but I dont think its really my GOTY. I really like borderlands 2 also but it hasnt really gripped me too much. Havent played Dishonored yet but I've heard good things.

I'd have to say Mass Effect 3 or Borderlands 2, but if I had to decide I'd got with ME3

and if there were a category for best game I never expected, I'd go with FTL. I've spent so much more time playing that than I really expected.

I'm assuming this is some kind of in joke, if so I'm obviously not in because I don't get it...

OT: Spec Ops: The Line definitely gets an honorable mention from me. Pity it came out the same year as ME 3 or it would have gotten my vote.

FTL. Its pretty much the only game that I have played for extended periods of time this year. Although, I do hear that Dishonored is simply ambrosia for stealth fans like myself, but my computer sucks ass and can't play most games.

Borderlands 2. I've beaten the game 3 times already and I'm halfway though another playthrough with Axton.

Journey or Spec Ops the line it's great because both games have the opposite affect on me With Journey filling me with awe and joy, then having Spec ops the line being a game that makes me feel sick, disgusted and mentally fatigued by the end.

Isn't it kind of pathetic that many people only seem to be mentioning games that game out in the last few months/weeks? Resident Evil 6? Spec Ops: The Line? Mass Effect 3?
Mass Effect 3 came out in early March actually. Go much further back and its 2011. Sleeping Dogs is a newer release than ME 3 as it came out in August. Just to argue semantics, the OP is asking us to pick what we think is the game of the year, that includes pretty much all of it till now. Not "Games prior to March when Mass Effect 3 was released because its too new"

It's Mass Effect 3 for me at this point.

Even with the disaster of an ending and other notable flaws, ME3 showcases the insane talent of at BioWare.

At this point, BioWare and Naughty Dog (who don't have a game out this year) are head and shoulders above everyone else in storytelling.

arkham city. It's so good.

Oh wait, that was november 2011.

Oh well. I've hardly played any 2012 games as this year has been pretty dry. If I had to though, Torchlight 2.

I'm still going with Arkham City. it's the best game i've played this year, for sure.

I'm gonna have to give it to the indie game scene in general. Minecraft got released, sure, but did anyone here only start playing that post-release? Walking Dead, FTL, Miami Hotline, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare... there's a bunch. Oh, and it's not a game, but Steam Greenlight. Love you too, Gabe.

I haven't really played and/or finished a lot of this year's bigger releases (time is money friend, and I have neither), but out of games I've played, Borderlands 2 comes first.

Other than that, yeah, Max Payne 3 was pretty cool, Spec Ops sounds like it was amazing.
Didn't appreciate ME3's ending, but that's another rant for another time.

Diablo 3 also gets a very honourable mention. (Is that the crackling of flames I hear?)

It has its issues - a lot of them, to be sure - but its main one is that it's not Diablo 2. If it had been the first in the series, I don't think it would have copped as much flak. I actually haven't played the first or the second, and I'm aware that that means I'm speaking largely out of ignorance, but as an introduction to the series, it was pretty good. I've enjoyed it, and I still haven't finished Inferno mode, but I appreciate the fact that Blizzard are actually trying to fix the problems. Sure, they should have ironed them out pre-release, but at least they ARE fixing them. Overall, it's a solid game.

I also really really really want to play Dishonoured. That one looks awesome too. Not too keen on the next batch of releases (AC3, BO2, Halo 4, Et Cetera 7...)
