Spec Ops: The Line or Crusader Kings II; it's been a slow year but those were two fantastic releases.
I own both of those and expect great things from them, but I haven't gotten a chance to play them yet. Still too busy catching up on big stuff from last year like The Witcher 2 and random indie games from who even knows when.

XCOM has been amazing thus far. Ironman Impossible has been an amazing experience almost heart-wrenching watching your seasoned vets you have been so eagerly moulding get torn apart on the front lines. But the awesome feel headshooting the last goon before he even knows your there. Top Game.

Isn't it kind of pathetic that many people only seem to be mentioning games that game out in the last few months/weeks? Resident Evil 6? Spec Ops: The Line? Mass Effect 3?

You don't think Diablo 3 was good? (I didn't but I'm sure some people might) What about Journey, don't people think that game's a work of art or something? SSX remains the best sports game series in creation, no? How about the release of Minecraft? Don't people think The Walking Dead is the last word in casual gamer dope? Sleeping dogs?
Mass Effect came out before Diablo 3 and at the same time of Journey so whats your point?

And Diablo? Really? At least say Torchlight 2. And you said Spec Ops The Line as if it was a game that was the hit of the year and people are just following the bandwagon. It wasnt, but I still consider it my GOTY.

Some contenders are XCom and Borderlands 2, Hitman still has a chance, we´ll see

Dishonored... though that's not saying much... really not much out this year that interested me... just your usual Halo, CoD shtick... with Borderlands 2 in there to remind me just why I didn't like the first one, and ME:3 to remind me just how bullshit moral choice systems are... even though Dishonored is guilty of the same thing, though not to the same extent... plus a bunch of other games I can barley remember, like Dragon's Dogma, or Tribes, or the countless dry RTS and TBS games out... oh yeah and than there was Sleeping Dogs... the first true Grand Theft Auto Clone in years... but any way, they might've been well reviewed, and I might've enjoyed them at the time, but they stick in the mind like a magnet on aluminum, and looking back, they arouse little more than a meh...<.<

So yeah, Dishonored, was the only game, for me to consciously look back at with any amount of fondness, not just a black hole of haziness ... though I was generally a bit disappointed with it... just came up the tiniest bit short in everything that I hoped it'd be... but it was certainly the best game that I've played this year...

Though I still need to get my hands on Spec Ops... especially with all of the good things I've heard about it... but can you really blame me? everything in it's advertising and everything that I've seen about it, made it out to be just another military shooter and god knows we don;t need any more of those...<.<

Xcom is pretty good, Dishonored was a little disapointing, Guild Wars 2 is what an MMO should be and Armoured Kill brought the Battlefield back, but once again my GOTY is an unfinished beta...I'll get those Kerbalnauts to another planet one day...
Soooo, Kerbal Space Program: GOTY.

I guess everybody's forgotten that Max Payne 3 came out this year. That's my pick.
Not everybody! Max Payne 3 is my pick too. Solid gameplay, interesting characters, fine voice acting, cool setting, a well-deserved revival for a franchise that had been thought dead and buried with the last gen.

Honorable mentions this year also go to Sleeping Dogs and X-COM: Enemy Unknown.

I have a feeling that I would probably add Spec Ops: The Line to that list, but I haven't picked it up yet.

Spec Ops:The Line. The first game where my jaw actually dropped in shock. It was also the first game to compel me to finish it in one sitting which just goes to show how powerful the game is. I usually take months to finish even short games but I made an exception for Spec Ops. I had the option to stop, but I chose to keep going.

For me it's Darksiders 2. Although to be fair, Dishonored isn't far behind.

1. Spec Ops The Line
2. XCOM Enemy Unknown
3. Borderlands 2(and I actually hated Borderlands 1)

I expect Far Cry 3 or Assassin's Creed 3 to replace the second and third ones when they get released.

Err, Diablo III. This is a tough one because I've played so few good games. Mass Effect 3 was complete trash start to end, Xcom messed up badly in all areas, Guild Wars 2 has some incredible potential but just isn't there yet. I've yet to play Dishonoured or Borderlands 2 but I have a strong suspicion Dishonoured may be the one to take it.

So yeah Diablo III. It lacks longevity in that after 300 or so hours you've seen everything and it doesn't really incentivise further play, but those 300 hours are pretty good, and the recent patches would seem to clear up the major frustrations. If I didn't have alt-itis the ridiculously weak itemisation would have killed it stone dead, but as is it's a constant feast of new abilities and new possibilities. Still without that itemisation I doubt it would even make top 5 in 2011s game of the year list.

To me that would definitely be Guild Wars 2 but only because I haven't played the other games yet (I guess I'm bias).

Just when I had thought that I had 'out-grown' video games, when I honestly had no desire to play them at all... along comes Guild Wars 2, the game that single-handedly brought me back. So far, I love it.

But, seeing as how I've mostly been playing MMORPGs for the last decade, I'm a little biased towards it. Still, I think its a great game, and gets my nom.

The sites actually saying it's still in Alpha, seriously no game but an alpha of an unreleased game tickled your fancy this year?

I would actually try the free demo but I find alcohol and assessing games at the same time to be kind of unfair to the game.
