What is your honest opinion on console flamewars?

I think the flamewars have grown so much this generation because there are many more people dissatisfied with their console purchases but don?t want to feel stupid for wasting their money, so they go to the other extreme of defending their purchase if only to make themselves look like a savvy consumer. The reality is that all the consoles of this gen leave a lot to be desired. The Wii got bogged down with shovelware, the 360 had a big hardware issue for most of this cycle as well as a monthly fee for online, and the ps3 had a really big price issue as well as a shrinking set of features.
The console flamewars would go away in an instant if everyone grew up and just said ?hey, if you bought a console this gen, you?re a sucker.? It?s not something to feel good about but at least it implies that we?re all equal.

The great sega-nintendo flamewar was great imo, since it pushed both sides to really come up with different products and compete to "be the best", which meant the consumer was the winner.

Had both a snes and megadrive, loved them both ^^

Ps1/Saturn/Gamecube was more tragic, since it saw the end of sega despite an awesome console.
But each console was still unique and worth getting.

Current console war.... Maybe I'm getting too old but I just don't see there being that big of a difference between 360 and ps3. They got some exclusives here and there, but not on same level as before. It still promotes competition but not on a creative level that the previous gens did.

Console wars overall is good thing imo, when it makes each side force to up their game, we consumers are the winners.

If we are talking about people who rabidly hate on a console because they have a rival one, now those people are just silly.

Bout as stupid as when a the console owners scream about elitist Pc users.

There is always some messed up jealousy about something they don't have so they try and make someone who has a pc/xbox/ps/wii into some sterotype bad guy to make them feel better about themselves.


And yet anyone with the ability to look at these items anymore, all consoles are now are just computer guts in fancy boxes. They are Pc's...wii has a celeron, the PS3 a quad core, ect...

Games are made for the mid or weakest system, so even the best hardware is held back for easy development cross console.

So honestly?

Bunch of fan boys that continue a whine from the Atari/intellivison days.

(looks back at the system they hate) Yeah this is so much better than what the other guys have... yeah... i should write and scream about it more... to force myself to believe i pick the wrong system...even though the games are flat out clones xbox/pc/ps3 yet some how...my system is best...yeah...

I think everyone should just shut the hell up and agree that N64 was the best console of all time. Yeah you heard me Microsuck/Gaystation/Wiitards

As for current consoles it's kinda pointless arguing which is better as it's just personal preference, same as the old PC console debate. Wii still has some of the best titles of the last decade despite being a haven for shovel-ware. Xbox has Halo (sweet,sweet halo) and PS3 online is free.

All things being said it's just a sense of feeling satisfied with your purchase that leads to flame wars. No different to sports fans smack-talking each other and admittedly that's one of the highlights of following sport, shame it's not the same for gaming.

Doubt they would hear with all the billions of dollars of brand loyalty in their ears.

Also, I think that Cyriak makes those videos specifically for forum .gifs, it's the only logical explanation! That or psychedelic mushrooms.

Well, none of it really matters, and no decent person really cares, but this stuff isn't gonna stop happening. The sad part is that these people just can't seem to grow out of it... They're kinda fun to read though, but I kinda feel saddened by the fruitless efforts of decent people who try to reason with people engaging in console wars because they're wasting their time trying.

It seems pointless once you get down to it, since most great games are multi console releases, and the few that arent usually arent good enough to sell the console.

... I dont know, I had the misfortune of playing Drake of the ninety nine dragons and aquaman on the original xbox, and after I finished cursing god for lettign sucht things exists and bleaching them as much as I could from my memory, I full heartedly decided then and there I would never go back to microsoft. so thats my reason for being pro sony.

Preface: I own an Xbox360, PS3, Wii, and PC.

I always found the idea of one platform being better than the others quite silly. People seem to be more intent on preying upon the faults of a platform rather than the good things. Why the hell should I be worried about graphics or price, as long as I'm having fun? Isn't that what games exist for, to let people have fun?

I've had more than enough enjoyment from all platforms, I love my gaming devices dearly. The sheer thought of any of them being worse or better than another is baffling.
