I went through lots of majors. When I was right out of high school I went to trade school for computer programming. I did fine but had a hard time getting a job afterward. I ended up working for Compaq in a factory but got laid off. I made enough there to get into a community college.

At some point I decided I didn't want to do anything with hardcore programming or computer science, so I majored in liberal arts and built up knowledge of classical literature (Greek mostly.) I took some time off from college and tried to work. I got a job tutoring at my old school and two years later got laid off again, took out a big loan and went to a four-year school.

Now I have a degree in New Media Studies, which is a mix of world literature, internet culture studies, graphic and web design, and a little programming. I got to study video games a little bit, mostly in terms of level design and aesthetic storytelling. Hopefully some of the work I did during those five semesters gets me into graduate school.

countrysteaksauce: From someone who knows - the computer industry is very hard to get into, and there are very few entry level positions for someone without a graduate degree. Most jobs want an MS and experience. More importantly, do what you love, and that's not some old person platonic advice. I lived for coding until I actually did and realized I hated it. I always loved writing and studying the art of writing and up until I became confident in my own ability didn't think I could get anywhere with it. Now I've got a degree in it, so it works.

Hope that helps.
Hats off to you for all your perseverance.

I may switch majors, I've been contemplating it for a long time actually, but the plan for now is internships and then this program to get into intelligence.

Bsc. in Astrophysics, picked because it sounds cool as hell, it's damned hard though, apparently number 3 in the hardest after Medicine and Law

BA in Graphic Design...

My Plan: Work for a several years at a GD firm of some sort, get some work under my belt WHILE i go for my Masters in the field... eventually I'll "retire" from that to go and teach high school art...

Thank you.

Also remember that college credit is pretty flexible, and even if you switch majors you can move your credits around from program to program. Something to think about.

Just made the switch out of a Chemistry/Biochem double major into Sports Communication. Just following my passions; not sure games have much of anything to do with it. Hope to write for a paper/magazine, or do some kind of broadcasting.

Hoping to take it to a Medical School or some form of Genetic Biology Degree
Or an Art foundation, if I get a rush of blood to the head.

Just thought I'd throw in some English school system to confuse you yanks out there.

I'm doing History at the university of Sussex, south England.
I chose this course because it was my favourite subject in school whilst I was studying to get into uni, and it just seemed like the logical choice to carry it on.
How are you finding sussex? I dropped out of there after a month or so last year. Didn't like it too much but as I was living off campus and had lived near brighton for the last 6 years I didn't get too much out of the experience.

I'll be doing English Lit later this year, hopefully.

Either Computer Engineering or Electronic Engineering depending on whether I want to learn programming.

Helleva switch, my friend. But, best of luck!

For me, I'm majoring in mathematics and physics.

Specifically, I'm studying radio physics.

Art emphasis. mostly cuz I really don't know what I want to do. I'm thinking about automotive sciences. I think I could pick it up fast and it is interesting enough.

Excellent idea to not take maths, though that could come back to haunt you later on.

I'm doing Chemistry with a year in Japan at the University of Sheffield, myself. My barely-a-D at A-level Pure Maths (only because of a B at AS, I scored 16 out of 125 in Module 6) forced me to take remedial maths classes now. Not that I mind an easy extra credit for basic differential and integral calculus ...
Anyway, the chemistry bit is excellent, and my Japanese teacher rocks (he knows 6 foreign languages and is reasonably fluent in 3 of them). I just wish I'd see him more often than two hours every Monday.

First course was in Cybernetics/Computer Science at Reading University, never finished the final year due to serious medical circumstances, so ended up with an DipHE (About equiv. to an associates').

Chose the course primarily as it was computer science related, but with something that stood out from vanilla courses, plus I've always had a love for robotics.

After that I took a year off and I'm now at the University of Leicester, studying for an MChem in Pharmaceutical Chemistry (and 3 days away for exams :s)

It's not as fun as cyb, but I've always had a flair for chemistry.

I'm planning to go for a master in either French, Irish or English. Have to apply for university in about five weeks time, so it's about time I decide... I want to study languages because of my love for books, but I do try to install a game in French if it doesn't involve too much long sequences with dialogue and so forth. And I'll probably become a teacher in the future, but as a previous post shows; time will show.

I major in interactive multimedia, it's basically a course about the 3D modelling and scripting in games. quite good fun.
