They're a cultural thing on the internet. It's also bleeding over into IRL. Scarily enough.

Nope, they suck. Anything that's funny on the internet is only funny until it becomes a meme, at which point it is repeated endlessly and in increasingly tangential and self-referential ways until everyone in the entire world is sick of the joke.

Thus, the internet is where humor goes to die.

And ironic quote in 3...2...1...

Well yes, and good on you for noticing. To me, though, there's a time and a place. And since everyone else is doing it, now is not the time for me.

Memes are like any other joke - once told repeatedly, and too much, it gets old and people get fucking sick of it. Most of the more obscure ones are pretty funny, but stuff like "over 9000" and the whole concept of "the game" (which was actually clever, but then it got really fucking annoying) are just not that amusing anymore, especially when your real life friends constantly bring up said things.

But everything else seems to be used in moderation, and as I don't hang out on 4chan very often I don't really get sick of stuff as long as it's not something that would cross over into real life. Once it crosses over into real life, it bugs me just as much as teenage girls when they say "lol" instead of just laughing - it's something that belongs on the internet, not in real life.

But fuck, it's better than "your mom" jokes.

I like some memes, and I hate others. I think the ones that piss me off the most are the ones relating to Portal.

Depends on the meme. Some I like, such as the Rickroll (Rick Astley's dancing always cracks me up, so that negates any annoyance from being trolled). And some I hate, such as the "subtitle Hitler's rant from Downfall" meme. None of those things have ever amused me. Others were fun to start but have been pushed way, way to far. Yes, we know the cake is a lie and that this was a triumph. Now shut it.

I've come to the conclusion that this websites pretty split on the usage of memes. On one side some people view the usage of memes, annoying and repeated way too often, and doesn't ad anything to the conversation or topic at hand. While on the other hand some people view them as humorous, sometimes witty inserts into a thread.

I view them as one of the manifestations of internet culture, and although sometimes immature and offensive, its adds to the community as a whole.
Tsukurimashou, Tsukurimashou. Sate sate nani ga dekiru kana

I pretty much agree with your statement. I usually find memes amusing, with the occasional annoying one. About the "adds to the community" part, I just have to make my obligatory Touhou reference. A Bullet Hell shooter with a fanbase that runs on the ginormous mountain of memes that the series and its fans have spawned. A good chunk of the community is there for everything other than the games. The memes and fan-made stuff attract more people to the series who in turn create even more memes and fan made stuff and so on. This is likely a bit more literal than what you meant, but there you go.

I mostly like memes. My last thread got flamed however for putting one in. I mean, t'was just for a bit of fun. And then it got locked for low content. :(

There are like inside jokes for people whoa re into internet cutlture, it's also fun to make your own among friends.

For example, my friend kept bringing up "Derek dies" in GTA, and listed several ridiuculous senarios in which he has died.

Memes are immensely powerful because they have the potential to be either the best things, or the worst things in existence.

On one side, nothing brings about more lulz then a perfectly timed, perfectly matching meme. Yet on the other side, when memes are overused and abused they become some of the most annoying terrible things to give you a migraine on the internet.

I suppose it all comes down to who's using them and whether or not they know how to use the immense power they wield.

An exception to this would be down to personal taste. I know that for me anyway, I'll never get tired of the "yo dawg" meme no matter how many times I see it. It's probably my favorite meme I'm aware of.

Memes are just a way for bland people who are lacking in personality to co-opt the personality of others. People use them for the same reason that people quote from TV shows and so forth - it's an easier process for the mind than having an original thought. Memes are therefore an indicator of laziness, and they're used because people would rather have other people do the thinking for them.
Well, look who turned up.

Problem, bro.

Saying the memes induce unoriginality and lazyness is like say map creators or art canvaces do the same. As memes have become more community based (hell, even memebase has a comis creator), its just a way for people to chip in and have a good, often genuinly thought provoking, running-joke.

OT: I Just finished reading all 200 pages of memebase and can preety much get behind them all.
Troll science is great stuff.

Funny in moderation, but not excessively overused. When I'm on Xbox Live, I only mention memes if the situation absolutely calls for it, and not every time in response. About two years ago, when I first found out about memes, I was a monster. IRL and everything. Now that I'm older and a little less foolish, I don't spew an internet meme in response to "How are you?".

Memes can be real fun, but do not belong in every corner of the internet

If you see them everywhere, it can get annoying.

I lot of people are starting to "speak meme" in daily conversations, which is an interesting linguistic phenomenon

My favourite meme is scene wolf.
