Humility, im a strong believer of the jante law, I'll admit that it may seem cold and even slightly scary when you read the ten laws (the eleventh one is just to "bigbrother" for me) but in practise most of them work great and when people break them most people would agree that that person is douche bag.
Janteloven is not about keeping others down, its about being equal, im no better than you and you're not better than i, and its not like it will keep people from being fantastic at something, it just keeps them from believing that because they exceed in a certain field or have a larger income that others that they are somehow superior beings.Imperator_DK said:Wrath, pride and sloth would be my faults, diligence in form of an unceasing devotion to the righteousness of the harm principle my virtue (and unceasingly brutal criticism and contempt of those which condemn in violation of it, hence the "wrath" and "pride" parts).

[small]I think the Jante "law" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jante_Law] might be too obscure a reference without explanation[/small]
I think sentences like "Don't think you are good at anything", "Don't think anyone cares about you" and "Don't think you can teach us anything" (applied to those who exceed in a certain field, and thus certainly could teach that) go beyond merely keeping the ego in check, venturing into anti-individualism and anti-plurality.Swaki said:...

Not to say humans don't have equal worth, but I'd prefer to refer the UN Declaration of Human Rights for that. Less petty....
Generally used colloquially as a sociological term to negatively describe an attitude towards individuality and success claimed to be common in Scandinavia, the term refers to a snide, jealous and narrow mentality which refuses to acknowledge individual effort and places all emphasis on the collective, while punishing those who stand out as achievers.

At times, I can discard any of them... but...
Then again, I am quite patient... waiting is the one thing in my life that I excel at, as I sometimes say...
One of the four I mentioned >.>
Then again, I am nonsexual, so that is Chastity by default... and I am normally diligent about the things I do...
And Temperance...

I'll admit that certain rules are borderline creepy, but they came way before the UN was even founded and as the same article points out the general theme is "Don't think you're anyone special or that you're better than us." and that's something i can support, im not saying you should live by these "laws" but they are a great thing to keep in mind, and heck comparing them to the thing the thread is about (the seven deadly sins) they are amazing, especially because breaking the rules in the novel only raises suspicion and wont lead to you getting killed.Imperator_DK said:I think sentences like "Don't think you are good at anything", "Don't think anyone cares about you" and "Don't think you can teach us anything" (applied to those who exceed in a certain field, and thus certainly could teach that) go beyond merely keeping the ego in check, venturing into anti-individualism and anti-plurality.Swaki said:...

I don't think so. If you list so many things that you think make you awesome, then you're not humble. As Weird Al once said;Greyfox105 said:Oooh, this is interesting...
