I unfortunately live in Glasgow at the moment, where the stereotype of it being full of junkies, alcies, bigots and generally aggressive, ignorant arseholes is sadly, for the most part, accurate.

It's sad because I think Glasgow is one of the most beautiful cities in the world; it's just a shame about the scum that make up a large part of the population.

Out here in Colorado we love us some publicity hungry gun nuts. Most recently there was the shooting at the Dark Knight premier. Don't forget Columbine in 1999. John Hinckley Jr., would be assassin of Ronald Reagan? Colorado. Wade Michael Page who recently killed 6 people in a Wisconsin Sikh temple was originally from Colorado. I think the guy that opened fire on the White House when Clinton was president was also from Colorado.

What is wrong with us?

The only actual embarassing stereotype I can think of for Scotland outside of the usual would be the Glaswegian view of Aberdeen, in that we assume everyone there is a sheep shagger.

Though I have never heard of the perception that people in Wales shag sheep like has been mentioned in the thread. So the British Isles seems to have a few of those.
Yeah I learned that Welsh stereotype the hard way, after a Welshman headbutted me at karaoke for altering the lyrics to Blur's Country House. Apparently my protest that I was actually implying Aberdonians fuck sheep didn't wash with him.

Well since you have England, all I can think of is that here in the Midlands people think were all Brummies, even though Birmingham doesn't make up all of the West Midlands, there's still the Black Country and Coventry.

I live in Denmark.

I don't really know if there's a stereotype of us but the most likely one must be that we're either unknowingly racist or just racist (a stereotype which is kind of reinforced by the fact that Danish immigration-laws are amongst the strictest in europe, not to mention the whole Muhammed drawing thing).

Well that does sound kind of true, a vast majority of Wild Rose votes were from the south of the province after all, even though your city voted PC, in fact Medicine Hat was the only one of the five major Urban centres where the Wild Rose won a majority, which is probably why they only made it to 2nd place. ha ha, Meanwhile all the Pinkos in the province are concentrated in Edmonton as always.

This is very true. And really, when you bring up those examples, I'll take the dullness.
Well I think it only looks dull due to the usually cloudy weather conditions, so if you really look for something interesting to do you can usually find a lot of things fun, maybe it's because I'm still young at heart, but if I'm out on the town I can always find something fun to do, like finding a place that sells interesting novelty beverages for instance.

Ugh, I've heard about Edmonton and it's crime. They need cops over there bad, and I'm hoping I don't get shipped off there after I'm done studying criminoligy and finish my RCMP training. Talked to a family friend who's an officer and he said they couldn't drag him there if they posted him there. Is it really that bad?
That bad? Really really not. There's some areas that aren't as nice, that's for sure, but I wouldn't say it's the worst. It's a very normal city. Last year.... yeah, it was bad, an average of almost a murder a week. Part of the problems we have is that it kind of ends up being party central for temporary guys from up north working in the oilfields. But really, it is a nice city. The river valley is particularly nice :)

Captcha: Big Brother. How ominous.
Alright, thanks for the input. Honestly though, I'd much rather stick around in BC where everyone is too high to commit any crimes other than shoplifting from a 7/11 when they get their munchies, instead of a town where murder is some-what common =)

England

Where to start?!? Xenophobia would be a good start; I'm not suggesting that every Englishman dislikes non-English people but there is still a sense of collective superiority floating around like a bad smell. That and we invented the phrase: "Johnny Foreigner"!

All Yorksire / Derbyshire people drink gravy, have whippets, wear flat-caps and work down t'pit; Southerners are all poncey and wouldn't know which end of a ferret to hold; Scousers are all thieves; Mancunians are all violent; Geordies are all rock-hard...I could go on.

All the above would be considered offensive in some countries but, most of the time, we see it as a bit of harmless fun and friendly rivalry....

Most of the time...

I could say something about Scottish people but I'm not brave enough to be anything other than complimentary!
This, basically.

Specifically I'm from Yorkshire. A lot of those are true for us, though frankly the labradors outnumber the whippets. We work the moorland.

Of course, there's the thing we english do where each region calls every other region of England inbred.

I never pieced all those together before. Damn, but it looks like you've got the statistics on your side for lobbying as the Gun Nut Capital of the US of A.

Colorado: Gun Nut Capital of the USA. Not Texas, but Colorado.

I guess you belong at the Big Kids' table, now.

Alabamian Here.

Obviously we are stereotyped as being racist rednecks, which is a bullshit stereotype brought on by (tin foil hat time) democrats when we switched parties because we wanted to focus more on the economy than bullshit racial issues.

In reality, we are just regular americans who have a southern accent and we are not as racist as people tend to believe, i mean if we were, why does the entire south have a larger population of blacks than any where else in the country. and to further go on, we tend to vote democratically on local levels, but this is slowly starting to change do to an increase in middle class and corporate businesses moving in along with an increase in technology.

Are there rednecks? well, yeah, every place has red necks, but then again our red necks tend to keep to them selves and not be the friggin family guy stereotype that revises the civil war history to our favor. also i lived here all my life and have seen ZERO klan members or any openly racist people that wasnt just a token mumble about something and then immediately dropped and not spoken.

And i also hate that bullshit about us being anti-technology and hostile that isnt protestant white. this is bullshit. you can go up to any old protestant geezer and ask him what his top five favorite tv station are and i guarantee the science channel or discovery channel is in there. We are not uneducated morons, in fact our education is pretty good.....its just that when you average up everyone from every demographic, you tend to have a huge drop in the average....and some of you know what im talking about. (personally i blame the unfortunate over exposure of a culture that promote ignorance and a lack of self irresponsibility along with a failure in parenting and good role models/ father figures in said demographic, which is sad because they have massive amounts of potential.)

/rant

whew....that felt good.

Ontario, Canada. Uhhm.

Well we, like the majority of Canada. Get the Bob and Doug Mackenzie stereotype. Like we go eh all the time eh?
I suppose it's not so negative, but we get told a lot that everything is centralized in Ontario from the rest of Canada. Manufacturing is biggest here, including the auto industry. The federal government. about 1/3 the population of Canada lives here.

Were also known as the place where that jerkass Harper lives (The PM). A lot of people don't like him, myself included. But I will admit thanks impart to him and the guys under him, the country didn't collapse into total economic disaster.

Chicago. Wherever I go, especially outside of the US, people seem to think we're stuck in the 1920s, as in Al Capone-type gang violence. To be clear, Chicago is no longer the most dangerous city in the US, or even one of the top 50 most dangerous cities.
Pretty much what he said.

Now I live in Vermont. Basically, we're mini-Canada. It's all I got, really.

I live in Oregon, and the stereotypes are kind of strange here... Everyone seems to think the western half of the state is populated by progressive, if yuppy, health-minded adventurers and rich folk. Meanwhile, the eastern side of the state is said to be full of hicks, backwards manly men, and ignorant farmers. Basically a mini-Texas.

Kind of a turf war between liberal and conservative, with both cliques keeping on their own side of the state.

Where I live is right on the dividing line between these two populations, and they don't mix well. This town has a strange contrast to say the least.

I'm from Michigan, but that is not why I'm here.

No, that is because of the stereotype of Detroit. You see people think that if you go to Detroit you will get shot/stabbed/robbed/assualted in some way. Well to all of you let me say this, this past summer there were 2 days that passed without an assault.

So suck it, that is 48 whole hours of assault-less bliss baby.
