Spec Ops: The Line, due to the fact that I haven't played The Walking Dead yet.

I came to say this. I got TWD yesterday, and I won't play it for some more time now, I doubt I'll even install it by the end of this year. But until I do play it, I'll say Spec Ops. Oh, by the way, TWD is 50% now on Steam and on GameFly [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.396858-The-Walking-Dead-and-XCOM-50-off-on-GameFly] (in case someone sees this post after the sale is over).

So I think we can all mostly agree that it's The Walking Dead or Spec Ops The Line? I'm in the Spec Ops blew me away but I haven't started TWD yet group (bought it today, not got time till next year).

had banpresto been nice and let someone do a translation of OG2nd then that would be my vote on game of the year. but because the Japanese hate North America my vote goes too.... wait did I even buy any games this year? ... the only new games i bought this year are halo 4 and ME3 neither of which impressed me.

Xenoblade is the most creative, but not the best. It is, however, the only game I know where you walk around on a god.
Not AS a god, or IN one, but having the entire game world BE a god. Damn.

Best story does belong to Walking Dead. While Spec Ops made me feel like shit, Walking Dead gave me pretty much everything on the emotional spectrum.

Spec Ops: The Line (same as my favorite game of the year). The Walking Dead was ok, but after about half way though Episode 3, the game was kinda dead for me. The rest, especially Episode 5, was more closure than anything. In Spec Ops I was wondering what was going on the whole time, why the CIA was there, and the ending made me say "Wow". It had a lot better story than anything I'd played in a long time.

Well, I quite liked Dishonored, myself. Spec Ops, Hotline Miami, and Mass Effect 3 all had pretty great stories as well. Those are all the stories I liked most in games that were released this year, I think. :p There were some others that were entertaining in a B-movie sort of way, but not exactly what I would call "good". XD

Walking dead wins this one by far. I checked it out after the raving started and was pretty impressed. The only runner up I can think of is Journey and that has more to do with how the story is told than what the story is. The story in journey is actually kind of empty but it was presented really well and I think the so-called emptiness was kind of intentional.

Dragon's Dogma had the story of the year for me. It's minimalistic but incredibly smart about how it puts the player in the position of having to choose between different perspectives on fate and agency. There is real philosophical fun to be had working through the implications of various choices. And you can stab a cyclops in the eye along the way. What could be better?

Dishonored would be a good second place.

Halo 4 got a lot of praise for its story, so did ACIII. Not saying you have to like it but they are considered by many to be well written. You are right, Witcher 2 came out in 2012 I just forgot because I got the Xbox version which was in 2012 and I was referring to Alan Wake's American Nightmare. And yes, ZE:FLW was a Japanese game for the Vita but then again if you want a good Japanese game nowadays handhelds are usually the place to look.

I'd have to say that Dishonored and Hotline Miami would be tied for me. Hotline Miami especially for having a story not unlike that of Dark Souls...Well...I don't mean it's the same story, just how they are presented. The story is only there if you look for it.

Journey for me. The subtle parts of the game play that all add to the story in a way that no other game I played did.

Just bought The Walking Dead...have to wait to download it but very excited for it.

Sorry but Spec Ops just blew me away.
same here, just got done downloading it myself, and spec ops was a fucking blast, it's been a while since i played a shooter for 6 hours straight, i was hooked.

(also fucking loved the soundtrack for the game, some of them are old songs but i think they fit perfectly.)

and as many people don't like him, i do like nolan north, and the other voice actors did great as well.

I know everyones going mad for the Walking Dead, and I'm sure everyone who's raving about have very sound reasons, but I won't play it for one simple reason:
I don't play zombie games.

So my GOTY?
Mass Effect 3

lol you are missing out on what is one of the best games ever made. walking dead may have zombies in it but the zombies are actually not the focus of the game at all. i dont know how to explain to you but please dont have the mindset that you wont like it just because it has zombies in it. please try it atleast once and am sure you would love it.
everybody who has a heart and has emotions MUST play this game. hell everyone who is a HUMAN BEING should play this game

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker. (I just got the HD Collection a few months ago, so I'll count it even though the PSP version came out in 2010 and the HD version came out in 2011.)

Seconded Peace Walker. Game wasn't really up to snuff but I can always get behind a good 'Start of Darkness' story, although this is more the continuation of what began in Snake Eater.

Mass Effect 3 minus 10 minutes. I have not played The Walking Dead or Spec ops the Line, or frankly many 2012 games. Everything(minus 10 minutes) in Mass Effect 3 was great, the gameplay, the story, the characters, the graphics were averae actually.

I must say I'm a bit surprised to hear people bringing up Dishonored. Much as I loved it, the story was not a strong point for me.

I've unfortunately not played either Spec Ops: The Line or The Walking Dead as of yet, and indeed have not bought many new games at all this year. As such I'm left with a fairly underwhelming choice: Max Payne 3.

The plot's a bit confusing and Max's constant determined misery and self-loathing gets pretty wearisome, but his transformation over the course of the story is something to behold. He always seems to find a way to go from a bad situation to an even worse one and you can't help but watch with morbid curiosity just to see how much lower he can possibly go. It's about the only time a game with such a thoroughly serious tone has managed to hold my interest through to the end.
