the game it self usually for numerous reasons, some even kill my interest in the game it self,

never finished ff12 as i stopped caring what happened to them, which was about the time i was yelling in the street like a moron, about some other guy: short end here: story and characters

in white knight chronicles (yup, played that, sux) i knew the story was slightly less original then the sun coming up in the morning, but gave it a shot since i got to make my own character, only to find 'I' mattered less to the plot then the fucking random enemy's you kill between painfully bad voiced cut scenes. : short end here: don't waste my and money by forcing me to make a character that has no impact on the story, if its purely for the on line bit THEN ONLY BOTHER ME ABOUT IT IF I USE IT!!!!!! >.< *fumes and add it to the list of game design sins punishable by death*

game concept can, on the flip side can keep me from getting into it, i recently tried lost planet 1, and found it ok, but painfully forgettable, and uninteresting story and combat wise really, even the vital suits were kinda bland, where as transformers : war for cybertron won all kinda of points by letting clear a hall of enemy's, by turning into a fucking TANK and spamming the cannon :3

first person tends to kill it for me to, when its full time i mean, for sniper activity's its expected

Shit driving physics.

GTA IV spoiled me and now all open world games with driving (that aren't GTA) seem lame to me.

It made Saints Row 2 and Red Faction almost unplayable for me.

what kills my immersion is when Im in the middle of an intence battle and suddenly xbox live bleeps at me to tell me that aclewis86 is online.

Bus stops in GTA IV. I'm in a fire truck, going 60 mph. You're made of glass. Why can't I run through you?

Stupidly enough, any form of HUD, unless the game can come up with a reason why my character should have it.

In WoW, on my RP server, stuff like "lolrpers hav no life. lolololol". If you don't like RPing, or RPers, get the fuck off the RP servers instead of trying to ruin it for us.

In Fallout 3 and Oblivion, it would be invisible walls and constant crashing. Why the hell do Bethesda release a game and DLCs if they crash when you play them?

The only games I don't usually have my immersion killed in are RTS games, but then again there isn't as much immersion in them as RPGs.

EDIT: I agree with Iwata. HuDs that have no reason to be there are annoying. One example of a good implementation in my opinion was the Supreme Commander HuD. In the game your character is in a giant robot suit, so it makes sense he would have this sort of HuD, and the overhead view can be explained away by satellite images or something.

checkpoints and bad voice acting or dialogue. especially newer Jrpg games, the kid with the crazy boomerang makes me slap my cheeks in stupidy when he talks.

They did that in Super Paper Mario, but made it funny. "In order to flip to 3D, tap the A button. What? What is the A button I speak of? Don't worry, the great being who watches us will know what to do." Not the exact quote, but close.

OT: Being called away from the computer. In game, horrible animations and acting, glitches, worlds where everything is mechanical and vacant, seeing an NPC dissapear when they walk into a door instead of opening it. Basically, any Bethesda game.

Any real world distraction kills it for me. Like phone calls, people talking, pets bugging me, and anything else that can possibly happen. If I have to listen to someone talking while I'm playing through a really good game for the first time, it totally distracts me from what I am doing and kills the enjoyment. If it's during a game I've played through a ton, especially an online shooter/race/sports game, I could care less though because immersion isn't what I am shooting for at that time.

Bugs and glitches. I'll be totally immersed in the game world and then get stuck on a rock or something and have to re-load.

I guess annoying voice-overs where they keep repeating and repeating the command they gave you already even though you are doing excatly what you should be but apparently not fast enough

For example Lost Planet 2

Using cannon on my ship to shoot the cannon on another one. It takes two shots to kill it and my cannon has to recharge in between. In that space of time the npc guy managed to say his line in the most annoying voice 4 frigging time "What are you DOOOOOOOOING destroy the cannon!". That was pretty fracking unimmersive right there.

Small graphical glitches screw me up, I noticed in RD:R that if there was even a little pop-in or a texture failed to load for a while it was like a slap in the face. Oddly, however, if something really fucked up happened (150 wolves come running over the horizon to gore my horse), I would just find it amusing and reload the game without feeling the least bit slighted.

And having to re-play significant portions of the game, especially horror games. Especially especially if I died from something likely to kill me, i.e. a boss. It's like going through an amusement park haunted house twice.

Three main things for me-

1. Quicktime events- no matter what the game WAS, it's just become dance-dance-revolution.

2. Scripted events- when I know that a tower will collapse or a tanker truck will explode in exactly the same way every time I go through a level, that whole singleplayer experience instantly gains 0% replayablility.

3. The worst of all- Mollycoddling. So I'm supposed to be this badass spy/soldier/thief whatever, with this amazing reputation, and yet I can't do ANYTHING without some 'helpful' voice blabbering in my ear about what to do, how and when to do it, even if it's as obvious as having a vent grate to open RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME.
