Judging from you age, your great-grandparents shouldn't have lived long enough to develop cancer. During the early 20th century, life expectancy was 30-40 years, so the chances to develop cancer (as it's main cause is simply age) were slim to none.
I only know the age of one of them, and she was... 80 something and still alive when I was born those 21 years ago. Not sure about the others.

Uhhh... where are you getting your data for lifespan from? Because I've just pulled up an old lecture slide which says the median lifespan for a US citizen in 1900 was 61 years.

The 30-40 years is global, since I couldn't find the australia-specific data on such short notice ;)

US and most parts of europe had a significantly higher life expectancy than the rest of the world, so you can't really compare any other country to them. But I have to admit that I have no clue about Australia, so maybe you can compare it.

In case I find a source on your country, I'll come back to you ;)

Appreciated, although I'm going to make an educated guess and say it would be reasonably similar to the US figure.

That is a rather specific subject for a Master degree, do you have a reason why you chose that? Also, please forgive my ignorance, but would you care to explain what a DPhil is? Are you starting your own talk show?

Edit: fixed some typo's (though probably not all...)
A DPhil (never heard it called that before but whatever lol) is a doctorate of philosophy, from there you get it in a specific field like medicine, or...Sorry my brains' not awake yet, but just a variety of topics.

I myself am a 2.5 year student (sophomore and a half xD) at University, studying psychology. I plan to ultimately get my PhD (<- what it's generally called) in psychology, though I might get a PsyD which is a doctorate of psychology. The two are pretty equal in terms of prestige, but the level of training of research/scholarship vs clinical work is different. Generally the PhD program focuses on the former more, while the PsyD focuses on the latter more. Anyway, that means another about year to year and a half (I really want to get out of undergraduate school and move onto grad) of undergrad at most, then about 2 - 4 years for masters then another 4 - 6 years for PhD [*pants*] ....I try not to think about that part of it. xD

As to what I want to *do* with it, I want to go into clinical practice, preferably privately, but probably at a hospital or whatnot till I get my feet wet, so to speak. Also I want to establish an LGBT halfway house, for runaways, homeless, etc. The stats are about 30 - 40% of any given's population are homeless teens of the LGBT variety. :( (http://www.gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories07/february/0202072.htm) I didn't know this myself till I saw an ad for a similar setup in New York and I thought hey, I'll have some money, I could do this. :3

I'm following university level physics. Its hard, but I'm going to stick with it.

I was inspired from my grandad. He said 'Physics can save the world', and it can.

It's an MChem; that's just what I'm doing research on specifically.

A DPhil is the same as a PhD, just from Oxford.

Found two sources: #1 [http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/reprint/55/6/1196S.pdf] and #2 [http://www.aihw.gov.au/mediacentre/2006/mr20060405.cfm], both stating an average lifespan of 53-56 (male-female) years.
Still too short to have a reasonably high chance of developing cancer, especially since the chances to die from any given disease like diphteria were a lot higher.

In my Honours (4th) year doing computer games technology which trained me in C++, OpenGL, DirectX, Cg (for shaders) and a few side-things like AI and networking in case we decide to specialise or become post-grad students.

But once I graduate I'm taking a year out, building some demos and developing my skills and saving up some cash before I try going for a job.

Well, I live in the USA myself.
When I decided I was tired of the town I lived in and had other interests to pursue, I dropped out of high school without thinking twice.

I spent a weekend driving with a friend to East bumblefuck middle of nowhere, South Carolina to get my G.E.D certificate. We arrived at the school I was to take the test in at perhaps 3:00 AM. With nowhere to go, and nothing to do but wait; and the fact that I needed sleep, we both just dozed off in his truck, setting our alarms to wake us up in the morning.
I got the G.E.D easily (since I, in no way consider myself a bumbling idiot like the people I took the test with).

Anyway, events occurred and I was unable to leave the town I had spent so much time in.
So I enrolled in school and I think I'll wind up majoring in English with a minor in Spanish.
But I'm a 21 year old freshman. Things may change.

I was a seventh semester Pre-med student getting a degree in Spanish when I decided to nix the Pre-med certificate (not an actual major at my school) and get a degree in Evolutionary Biology instead. Now I am an eighth semester Spanish and Evolutionary Biology dual student with one year to go.

I'm not sure if I'll have enough clinical experience to be a strong contender at top-tier med schools at the end of this, so I might get a masters in something or other.

Remember, money means less than you could ever imagine. Go to college for as long as you want.

I started out at a nursery and then did Primary school, went to a Grammar school from age 11-18, and now I'm in my Freshman year at Leeds University doing Maths. Did 13 GCSE's, passed all with 6 A's and 2 A*'s, and did 2 A's , a B and 2 C's at A-Level. To be honest though, I'm starting to regret not taking the choice of doing a non-Maths elective last semester, since I would have loved to do a Drama module as well, but Maths is awesome and I'm actually half-decent at it, which is always a plus :D. Hoping to work as a Game Designer after I graduate, but failing that I'm into filmmaking and drama so maybe something will beckon there...

There's plenty of stuff, (I hope!). Literature is still a massive industry, despite what people say about reading levels dropping. Off the top of my head, there's various professions in writing, editing, publishing, proof-reading, advertising, etc. that might interest me. Only trouble is that it's a very competitve industry, which means that even keen types like myself can be left by the wayside. Let's hope not!

Alternatively, there's always the academic route as you mentioned. I don't think I'd be interested in being a teacher, (kids can be smartass little bastards, I'm not sure I've got the patience) but I've considered continuing on to a PhD, I like the idea of being Dr. Bimbley! From there there's lecturing and academic writing to be had. There's a nasty 20,000 word dissertation standing between me and the Masters to go first, so it all depends on whether I'm burned out by the end of that.

i'm a bit surprise to see how little people are heading toward the gaming industry on here!
i myself am currently studying in 3D modeling/animation, i only just started 2 months ago but hell do i love it!
Planning on working for some big shots eventually, if everything goes as i want, my name will appear in futur Valve games! (Half Life 4 or Left5Dead perhaps?!)
Blizzard would also be very pleasant.

From 2002-2007 I went and earned myself a BA in History from the University of Calgary. I specialized in Religious History and graduated with a GPA of 3.3.

I'd like to get another degree at some point in the future, when I could afford to quit working for awhile and just be a student again, but I don't know when that would be. I'd like to get that degree in Cultural Anthropology or Religious Studies.

I've also considered going into Law, since I find Legal Theory so interesting. I'd be worried that I wouldn't be very good at it though.

I've also got a Land Administration Certification from Mount Royal College. One of these days, if I ever get serious about Land Admin, I might go back for my Landman Certification.

Are you still in high school at the moment? We didn't have any programming there too unfortunately. Perhaps we could choose a bit more of a direction, but the educational system is still too backwards to realise the value of early programming experience. Hopefully you will be able to do what you want soon enough.
Yeah, we actually do have classes I've already learned PASCAL and moving up next year. I'm teaching myself C++ at the moment. The stupid thing is though, we have these idiotic 'filler' classes as I call them, which are completely useless and I just feel I am wasting my time in them (Peer Counseling, Leadership, and HOPE which is a PE program which I don't need due to the fact I am on the swim team).

You just lost why the game was called Left4Dead.

That said, in high school I am in an advanced program where I will be going through classes on confidence, public speaking, professional etiquette.. And whatever that relates to it. While in high school I will most likely be dual-enrolling or definitely taking AP classes..While taking a class that will allow me to be in the workforce and make an average pay on the side instead of say, working at some shithole of the food service industry.

Higher education? I am going to major in science.. Leading to a M.D with my specialty being internal medicine..

I plan on going into law and politics.

However, at the moment, I am still a few years from college, but I am in accelerated courses, and plan to go into as many AP classes I can. Sure, it may end up killing me, but if it doesn't... well, I'm sure you know the saying.
