Hello everybody, I have to conduct a survey for my psychology class so I decided to make the people here at the Escapist my target group. As you may have guessed by the title I'm looking at what genres of music are the most popular around here. So here are the questions:

1. What's your favorite band/artist?

2. Why are they you're favorite?

3. What's your favorite song?

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?

5. And why?

I know the questions kinda suck but I'm not great at thinking of questions for stuff like this. Lol

The tastes here tend to be on the heavier side of the metal spectrum, I'm actually quite mellow in comparison, but heres my preferences:

1.Favourite band:
Boston (1970's rock band, did "More Than A Feeling", still around today, making a new album but it's taking them forever.)

2. Why:
I like the way they layer the electric guitars, and the effects they use make them sound so... regal.
best shown in this song:

3. Favourite Song:
Incidentally that one I used up above is my favourite.

4. Favourite Genre:
I listen to Rock most often: Meatloaf, Scorpions, U2, Muse Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson etc.

5. Why:
Can it be as simple as I enjoy the sound they make? I love guitar solos and head banging riffs

1. What's your favorite band/artist?
Nightwish

2. Why are they you're favorite?
The fantastical atmosphere and songwriting. Plus, metal and classical is the greatest combination of genres I've ever heard.

3. What's your favorite song?
The Poet And The Pendulum

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?
Metal

5. And why?
Metal has such an energy and complexity that I find attractive in my music.

Too tired to go into much detail, but that's the summary.

Favorite Artist: Citizen Cope

Why: I really enjoy his soulful and bluesy rock, his expressive voice, and songs with poetic lyrics which mix fantastic realism with Americana and which commonly contains messages of quiet inspiration. Especially as seen in Salvation, which is one of my favorite songs. Another example is Sideways, which reads more like a poem than the lyrics to a song.

Favorite Song: Boulevard of Broken Dreams as performed by Nat King Cole, which is actually a completely different song than the one by Green Day. It's smoother than Tony Bennett's version. Bennett's version, however, makes a better tango.

Favorite Genre: Neo Soul

Why: I like the genre as it tends to emphasize my favorite instrument, the human voice, and it's dedication to sincere passion.

1. It's a toss-up between Incubus and RHCP

2. Incubus: Their music tends to have a nice blend of progressive, psychedelic, and edgy sounds that I find absolutely soothing to the ears.

RHCP: Do I really need a reason?

3. Incubus: Under My Umbrella/Clean/When It Comes/Blood On the Ground/Drive (I could go on...I really can't choose one)
RHCP: My Friends (This one choice took a lot of restraint)

4. Classic/Progressive/Alternative/Indie Rock

5. I'm not even sure. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that my father is a musician and, while growing up, the strums and tricked out plucks of a guitar were always somewhat of a backdrop noise. In the neighbourhood I grew up in, rap and hip-hop were very popular and I admit that I was heavily influenced by gangsta rap and the like. The older I got, however, the more my taste began to reshape and mould itself similar to the music my father likes to play and listen to, which is mostly classics, jazz, and a whole lot of rock.

@OP: What thesis is this then?

1. What's your favorite band/artist?
Blink 182 followed very closely by Green Day

2. Why are they you're favorite?
I don't tire of Blink 182 even after repeated playings. As such I've heard their stuff more frequently than any other band I like. Their drummer is amazing, but their image and often times lyrics are terrible.

3. What's your favorite song? Can't decide which of the following I like best.
Time of Your Life - Green Day
Adam's Song (Live) - Blink 182
I'll be Missing You - Puff Daddy

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?
Instrumental dominates my playlist followed by Punk, Hip-Hop, Country and Christian

5. And why?
I love songs with a catchy beat and lyrics I can sing along to. The meaning of a song, the artist' message or image are completely irrelevant to my enjoyment. For me it's a thoughtless experience that brightens my day or simply acts as background noise to whatever I'm doing.

1. Devin Townsend

2. Because he makes truly genius music that ranges from subtle whispers of gentle beauty, to crushing, cacophonous symphonies of chaos and madness.

3. Right now it's this one

4. Every genre. Have no prejudice against any genre (except autotuned stuff).

Mostly listen to metal...

5. ...because it makes me feel happy, positive and alive.

Dream Theater

2. Why are they you're favorite?

One of the staple bands of progressive metal, and I have yet to be thoroughly disappointed with anything they come out with.

3. What's your favorite song?

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?

Progressive Rock/Metal.

5. And why?

Favorite Artist: Aphex Twin, as of right now.

He's my favorite because I really enjoy the range he has in the space of one album, the addictive beats, and his work with Chris Cunningham is too freaking amazing for words.

This is my favorite song, currently:

<youtube=ZVvjXJentik>

If there's any justice, this is what will play when the world ends.

I tend to listen to electronica, light rock, ambient and soundtracks most often, although I've been known to dip into pop, industrial and classical.

I listen to the first for mostly because I rarely sit down and really listen to the music. The genres (especially ambient and soundtrack) tend to meld with my life without drawing too much attention to themselves.

1. What's your favorite band/artist?

At the moment I'm extremely inclined to say Mastodon. I have absolutely become obsessed with their music. I've been listening to them nonstop for a couple weeks now.

2. Why are they you're favorite?

They're albums are fantastic. They are much greater than the sum of their parts, which are pretty damn great by themselves.

3. What's your favorite song?

Naked Burn

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?

Many various genres and subgenres, but mostly metal and its various subgenres.

5. And why?

I love the raw emotion that's poured into the music by the artists. I also appreciate the artistic talent displayed in metal that a lot of people dismiss.

My thesis was that types of rock and metal would be the most popular by a landslide. This was influenced by my own personal tastes and about a year of lurking the forums xD

1. What's your favorite band/artist?
That would be Bach

2. Why are they you're favorite?
The man was a genius. There has yet to be a musician with as much talent as Bach and even fewer in today's musical era who can compete.

3. What's your favorite song?
That changes with my mood. ATM, I'm going to have to go with "Fiddler on the Green" by Wizards and Demons

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?
Metal ... real metal. The kind of metal Sammy Hagar was singing about. Not scream metal, not screech metal, not electro hyper super dangerous final attack metal. But metal; pure and unfiltered.

5. And why?
Metal just seems to satisfy a craving almost like an addiction.
