I love classical orchestra.

My current favorite song is J.S.Bach - Piano Concerto No.1 in D minor BWV 1052 Mvt 1.

I don't favor any particular orchestra.

I don't really have any kind of reason to justify(if that's the right word to use here, I'm not sure) my love of certain classical music.

1. What's your favorite band/artist? Hard to say favorite so instead my top 5 : Skillet, Paramore, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Evanescence, and Papa Roach.

2. Why are they you're favorite? A few of their songs really stuck which led me to looking up more which led to more sticking and so on.

3. What's your favorite song? Hero (Skillet)

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often? Alternative Rock, Christian Rock, Gothic Rock, Southern Rock...Basically any rock...

5. And why? I grew up listening to soft rock. My mom loved Rod Stewart and both of my parents liked the oldies so thats what I usually heard. I have changed somewhat but I stayed with the rock genre for the most part.

OT:

1. A very hard question, as I listen to classic rock and there are so many great bands.
I'll have to go with a list if that's ok, if not, just go with the first one- Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Journey, Credence Clearwater Revival, Billy Joel, Van Morrison, Boston, and Tom Petty (with or without the Heartbreakers) to name a few.

2. Nearly all classic rock bands, especially Led Zeppelin, brought so much more into their music than anything modern. A cliche way of saying it is that their music had soul, there was feeling behind it, it wasn't just meant to get the most hits.

3. Once again hard to say. But I've always had a special spot for "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Rolling Stones.
<youtube=Je8MXiwmNIk>

4. Like I said in #1, classic rock.

5. Also like I said in #2 (I seem to have gotten ahead of myself) modern music just isn't the same, it's all about making money, and the songs are all just copy/paste (in my opinion) of partying, doing drugs, or some failed relationship.

EDIT: Completely forgot about Queen, no clue how I managed that. Queen FTW!

Don't really have a particular favorite band/artist, but I'd say my top few are
Kamelot, Blind Guardian, Loreena McKennit, Dream Theater

They're my favorites because I just really enjoy their sound and their themes.

Again, don't have a particular favorite song, so some of my favorites are:
Kamelot's "Necropolis" and "The Human Stain", Blind Guardian's "A Voice in the Dark" and "Otherland", Loreena McKennit's "The Mummer's Dance", and Elvenking's "Skywards"

Preferred Genres: Metal, esp. progressive, power, and folk metal. Additionally, I like some Celtic folk music too.

Why? I don't really know. For the first 18 years or so of my life I never had much interest in music, apart from a few songs I enjoyed. At that point, I started listening to metal and immediately fell in love with it and the fire it called into my soul.

Very hard to nail down a favorite with me... I listen to a lot of metal, more than a little techno/industrial/electronica, a lot of classic rock, some hip hop/rap/nerdcore, a bit of grunge from my formative years, lots of symphonic music (be it classical or modern)...

I suppose if I had to choose what I consider the artist(s) who had the most influence on music I listen to, it's probably a tossup between Sergei Rachmaninoff and Led Zeppelin.

1. Pink Floyd

2. I love their concept albums, besides after I got into them I got into progressive rock too, which lead me to hear all sorts of albums and experiment different kinds of musical genres.

3. Time, the lyrics are beautiful and, in my opinion, has the one of the bests guitar solos ever.

4. Progressive rock

5. I just love long passages of music and changes in the time signature. Although not all progressive rock songs are 23 minutes in lenght, some are way shorter. Still, I can enjoy complex music as much as a good pop song.

1. What's your favorite band/artist?

For Bands, Dream Theater. Coheed and Cambria is a close second.
Artists: Beethoven, Bach, Holst, Hendrix

2. Why are they you're favorite?

I like the complexity, overall style and how they explore interesting themes (not every song is a love song).

3. What's your favorite song?

I can't decide, really. Also, the new album from Dream Theater hasn't really sunk in for me but it is so far REALLY good.

Beethoven's 9th Symphony in D minor is amazing. As is The Planets.

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?

Progressive Metal/Rock, Heavy Metal, Psychodelic Rock, Classical/Romantic, Thrash Metal, Alternative Rock, Boroque.

5. And why?

Because I like it >.<

1. Coheed & Cambria, easily. Japanther's such a close second it's not even funny.

2. I've loved them since about fourth grade and I listen to them about every day. I just wrote a five page paper on them for English because I like them that much.

3. Probably Junesong Provision, but I'm getting really keen on Mother Superior.

4. Indie, Progressive, Rock, a little metal, occasional rap, emo, alternative, digital hardcore, industrial. Whatever I'm feeling at the moment.

5. I like supporting all kinds of art because I enjoy it.

I agree that most new music doesn't really have soul which is why I've been listening to mostly older stuff lately, pretty much nothing newer than some 90's grunge. Mostly Iron Maiden though. Some newer bands are pretty good though like Godsmack and Disturbed to name 2.

And I'd like to thank everyone who's replied so far! I'm heading to bed and I'll check back up on this in the morning.

1. Queen
2. Awesome, unique band. Nothing quite like them. Radiohead would be my number 2. As for artists, probably Robert Johnson, and then Eric Clapton.
3. Damn, I can't remember its name (yeah, can't remember the name of my favourite song lol), but its an old
4. Blues, Jazz, Oldies, early Rock (50s - early 70s), Techno, Electronica
5. I've always liked Jazz and Blues. I was exposed to Oldies via my father, who in turn was exposed to it by Fallout xD Anyways its odd that I jump from the late 60s to mostly modern electronic music, but its just that there doesn't seem much else today that I either like, or just doesn't all sound bland and the same as everything else (modern day rock), you know, it has some soul put into it, and because of the nature how you make it, you KNOW how much they're putting into it. Very few exceptions to the rules (Rush, Dream Theater, Nirvana), among them my favourite, Queen.

1. Devin Townsend. Though Mastodon are a close second.

2. I've never heard music with the same emotion I hear when I listen to Devin.

3. I don't really have a favorite song, but I'll say "Thickening" by Mastodon, as that one's dominating my iPod right now.

4. Every sub-genre of metal and progressive music.

5. There are a plethora of reasons but I'll just say because skill sounds good to me and metal / prog bands are where I find a lot of talented musicians. And also because it sounds very uplifting.

1. What's your favourite band/artist? That's a tough one....probably Lacuna Coil though...

2. Why are they you're favourite? because the lead singer's hot? seriously though? I like their lyrics and I've seen them live. I love their energy and I love the music. And its really good angry music

3. What's your favourite song? Another tough one and really depends on my mood. At the moment....ummm let's go with 'Iris' by the Goo Goo Dolls

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often? according to my last.fm station symphonic metal, gothic metal, female fronted metal, metal, ska, rock, punk, ska/punk.....If you really want the full list of what I listen to http://www.last.fm/user/aprilmarie42

5. And why? Good question. Probably because it tends to be what I collect? Its good music to me. Nice angry music, good for driving, good for long gaming sessions(or short ones, any at all really), and good for exercising to.

I know the questions kinda suck but I'm not great at thinking of questions for stuff like this.
I have a question for you. Why do you have to do this? Like what specifically is the assignment

Also in regards to my favourite band/artist and song, they both tend to fluctuate with my moods. Ask me it tomorrow you'll get a different answer. Ask me it on the individual days I work you'll really get different answers. Especially since I tend to be very musically diverse. I listen to everything. Jazz, classical, swing/big band, rock, metal, a bit of rap, country, etc....

1). Probably Maroon 5 at the moment.
2). Mostly because Adam Levine is an extremely awesome singer.
3). Stereo Hearts is pretty awesome.
4). I am probably the outlier on this forum. Club/House and Pop are probably my favorite genres now a days. I like A LOT of different types of music though. I don't go too far into Heavy Metal (as it seems EVERYONE else does) mostly because I don't like the screaming. I'm also more into a progressive sound. I don't really vibe with the ultra high pace that most metal sets.
5). I like music that is fun. Unlike most people I know who listen to Black Metal and such, I don't really care about the lyrics to a particular song.

Of course what I said is a generalization, I'm sure there are more modern bands that put soul into their music, at that point though I just like the rhythm and the overall "feel" of classic rock bands though, but that just comes down to personal tastes.

Just to create a survey and then write an essay explaining the steps we took, our results, etc. I chose to do this because I figured it'd be far easier than going out and asking 30 random people in person (30 is the minimum amount of people we have to survey). And of all the forums I frequent this one tends to have my favorite community. And with that I'm off for the night, hope that answered your question well enough.

This is really difficult, choosing just a single artist or genres are nearly impossible. So I'm gonna name a couple.

1. What's your favorite band/artist?
Here's a few. 2Pac, Kanye West, Outkast, Nujabes, A Perfect Circle.

2. Why are they you're favorite?
Well, obviously they're all different so I like them for different reasons. But I imagine I like them for the same reasons anyone would like them.

3. What's your favorite song?
I... have no idea. But according to my most played songs it's Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson or Mainstream by Outkast.

EDIT: I'm actually going to say Only God Can Judge Me by 2Pac

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?
Mostly hip-hop, jazz, and experimental. But really I'm open to anything.

5. And why?
I guess probably for their lyrical content and sound. Why anyone likes their type of music. It's funny though, because when I was in middle school I refused to listen to anything but alt rock and metal.
