What kind of Pokemon team do you build?

Keep in mind, my team isn't exactly...metagame.
Delphox (79)
Lapras (76)
Garchomp (75)
Lucario (77)
Aegisword (77)
Venusaur (78)

Beat the Elite Four at these levels. I was disappointed by them, not so much because of their levels. I already knew I was overleveled. It's just...why did they have only four Pokemon? Way to limit their teams...

Also, never have all three starters in your team; it has this tendency to choke your team's potential, though, it might be better here with everyone of them evolving into a double type.

Lucky for the metagame that Doublade can't learn any one-hit KO moves, because if it could, it's No Guard ability would allow it to own completely. Not that it changes much. Its move pool is spectacular, and the early moves really benefit from the ability. Especially Fury Cutter. Plus, accuracy reduction moves don't really seem to impact Doublade with this ability, I found.

That said, getting Earthquake for my Garchomp was a pain! You need Waterfall to reach the TM. Still, I don't regret it. I just regret thinking for a moment that it learning Draco Meteor was a good idea.

Lapras was a fine choice, though. Surf, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, and Body Slam for flavor.

I tend to get a pokemon each of the stronger types, then teach them powerful moves that cover a couple of different types, then feed them speed boosts and stuff so they nearly always attack first. That way I basically always have a supereffective move that will strike first for a good amount of damage. It's pretty unimaginative, but it's always worked pretty well.

I always go for balance. In terms of typing, it's usually;

Fire
Water
Electric/Grass
Flying
Rock/Ground/Fighting
Psychic/Ghost/Dragon/Dark

Obviously most of them will have secondary types as well but if I can get at least one of the types in each of those sets, I'm happy.

Having said that, I really want to use an Ice type when I can play X :) Haven't used Ice much before at all.

I like to keep it fairly diverse. My team on Y is:

Greninja
Charizard
Gardevoir
Gogoat
Aegislash
Tyrantrum

Gardeovir was the only one I wasn't planning to get when I picked up the game, but she's become my most versatile and powerful Pokemon at this point. God bless the overpowered Psychic/Fairy typing and a diverse array of special attacks with which to kick arse.

Currently my team is.

Delphox
Blastoise
Pangoro (Also known as PandaBanchou "lets finish this properly." Yay for you if you get that reference)
Doublade
Tryantrum
And as a place holder Lucario.

Planning to Switch out Lucario for a Noivern when I get the chance to catch one. Also thinking of switching out Doublade for either a grass or fairy type.

As you can see I tend to prefer pokemon with a lot of direct attack power. Delphox, Doublade, and Tryantrum are all maxed on Bond. Which gives a lot of benefits to combat so I suggest doing it.

My main team;

Blastoise (84)
Glaceon (fuck yo dragons) (81)
Alakazam (Opponant dependant due to his pants physical Defence Stat), (69) Mewtwo otherwise (74)
Yveltal (75)/Pidgeott (75)
Lucario (79)
Gengar (74), Raichu (58), Chesnaught (54), Charizard (36), Blaziken (73), Venasaur (36) depending on opponant

Compared to previous games I've actually tried to make a balanced team this time round with moves for every occasion

My current team:
Chesnaught
Pancham (will become Pangoro soon)
Pikachu (will evolve soon)
Tyrunt (will evolve, currently EV training)
Meowstic (female, might switch out)
Blastoise (gonna EV train soon)

Quite balanced I think.
How soon is soon for evolving Pikachu? I waited right to lv50 to evolve mine so he could learn Thunder. Since apparently Raichu develops some kind of amnesia and can't learn any new moves ones you've evolved Pikachu.

Tyranitar (Rock/Dark) to act as a wall against physical types, and to dish out some damage. His typing is great for crushing Psychics and Ghosts that might otherwise rip my team apart.
Tyranitar is actually one of the bulkiest pokemon when it comes to special defence. Even without EV's in Special Defence, he gets a x 1.5 boost to Special Defence when he's in a sandstorm (this applies to all rock types). And since Sand Stream brings in a sandstorm upon switching in, he's pretty much set from the get go. Tyranitar's attack also means that he'll defeat most things (especially in-game) within the five turn limit, so I'd definitely recommend him as a special wall. Plus, there are fewer and rarer special fighting type moves.

OT: My team (for when I finally get the game) is probably gonna be this:
-Chesnaught
-Charizard
-Lapras
-Aegislash
-Goodra
-Gardevoir/?

I pretty much catch whatever I think is an interesting pokemon. Chesnaught is my favourite of the starters, Charizard and Lapras are my Pokemon red homies, Aegislash has that hectic typing and ability and stats and literally everything is epic about him, and Goodra looks too goofy to pass up. Gardevoir... To be honest, I only chose Gardevoir to make up the numbers. I didn't want to double up on typings anywhere, but I also wanted something that was at least moderately powerful and that I was willing to use. It was actually surprisingly hard to find a sixth pokemon that I hadn't used to death. (This is what excludes Gengar, Alakazam, Staraptor, Ampharos, Scizor... basically everything else that's badass)

Blaziken is levelling faster than my badges will allow -_-' This may have been a big mistake.

I haven't played a pokemon games since White and never really gotten into that either. I'll have to save up for Y before I can buy that one.

In the meantime, here's my Platinum lineup:

Infernape (Fire/Fighting)
Bibarel (Normal/Water)
Drifblim (Ghost/Flying)
Luxray (Electric)
Garchomp (Dragon/Ground)
Weavile (Dark/Ice)

I build a team based on what I'm currently doing, usually consisting of: my starter(s), 1-2 pokemon that I'm training up, and the rest utility and coverage. My team grows and evolves naturally as the Pokemon themselves do.

Current team is:
Chesnaught lv43
Eevee lv25 (training to Sylveon)
Honedge lv29
[Mega]Lucario lv31
Lapras lv30
Torchic lv15

"Mains" currently in the box:
[Mega-X]Charizard lv36
Kadabra lv28
Helioptile lv 27
Tyrunt lv30
Amaura lv30

I spend a lot of time catching pokemon.

Side note is is possible to get a Hydreigon that knows Thunder through breeding? Because I want a Ghidorah...
Not that I know of. It can learn Charge Beam and Thunder Fang, though.

I just train every pokemon I like and use whichever suits the area I'm in. Currently my team consists of:

Chessnaught (41)
Vivillion (37)
Charizard (42)
Skrelp (43)
Clawitzer (39)
Wobbuffet (40)
Gengar (31)
Florges (51)
Doublade (46)
Amaura (33)

I'm considering adding Jolteon, Ferrothorn and Tyrunt but I'm already kind of underlevelled (I refuse to use the exp share)

Doing this tends to keep the game somewhat difficult while providing a greater sense of diversity among my team.

Blaziken
Greninja
Venusaur
Absol
Lucario
Pachirisu/ Electrike as I can't decide which one I prefer for my electric type.

I think all in all I have a pretty balanced team even if Dark and fighting appear a few too many times as a sub type.

I have Vivillon, Talonflame, Gible, and Tyrunt as reserves for when I need to swap out for anything my main six can't deal with.

My core three seem to deal with most things as they're all around level 50 at the moment, everything else sits at 30-45 but I plan on giving them a run of training with the starter team put away.

Super training is a god send for giving the lower level guys a fighting chance.

Hah, the mark of an only child with a GameBoy. A huge fondness for Haunter/Kadabra/Machoke.

Same here. I tried using Graveller for a while to be different but was completely indifferent to Machoke.

I'm currently hitting up:

Chronic - Ivysaur (male)
Conka - Quilladin (female)
Willow - Pidgeotto (female)
Avalon - Azumarill (female)
Beth - Honedge (female)
Baphomet - Skiddo (male)

Although, to be honest, I've not really used anyone but Chronic since I got him... This game is too easy.

I always go for offense, physical and special. I try to balance out typing as much as I can, but it's impossible to cover every type with a six 'mon limit. If I had my way I would pack a Magnazone, Darmanitan, Slaking, type of team. Darmanitan with Belly Drum, Fire Punch, Sheer Force and Charcoal. That thing has punched out dragons.

Right now in X I have Mega-Alakazam, Mega-Gengar, Pangoro, Noivern, Delphox, and Geninja. My team keeps getting busted up due to people using legendaries though. And the Global Link has been under maintenance forever, so no battle restrictions suck.

I usually just fill it with Pokemon I like. I haven't got X/Y yet, but this usually involves Lucario and Absol.
Both of whom happen to have new evolutions.
Me and this gen are gonna get along juuust fine.

Let's be honest here, having a Drought Mega Charizard Y on my team, switching into Blaziken is making this game piss easy =\.

(Or not even switching, drought boosted fire fang is basically OHKOing everything it hits).

My team for pokemon X to defeat the elite 4 was:

Xerneas
Greninja
Lucario
Charizard

And that was all I needed..
Seriously, Fairy is OP vs Elite 4... 1 Geomancy from Xerneas and he/she/it swept everything aside...

As for my usual team comp, well, I usually pick the ones I believe have awesome designs/story...

Marowak is one of my all-time favourites... Although while breeding them the "background" kinda loses sense (Cubone wears the skull of it's mother (by lore)... But since the mother is still in the daycare centre, well... Yeah, it fell through)

Last-Gen my team was:
Marowak
Absol
Accelgor
Mismagius
Virizion

And I think the only pokemon from that list that will change is Marowak... Either for a Gardevior, Banette or Mawile
