"HEY LISTEN"
Everyone says Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is the best game ever.
My question to you is what truly made it such a great game?

Tingle.

Wait..

OH SHI-

But seriously, I can't explain it. It was the first game I ever played, and I have unlimited memories of playing that game and bonding with my siblings for the first time.

I'll let someone else post paragraphs about how good the graphics were for back then, the usefulness of the combat and Z-target, and the epic storytelling. I'll just cherish my childhood memories. :]

The sheer ammount of stuff to do was awesome, the difficulty was challenging but not impossible, the design was excellent, the story was involving, the monsters were awesome and fun to fight, and the musical score was brilliant.

Yeah... Does anyone really know? I still love the game, though, for reasons unknown.

Another reason I love the game?

Song of Storms.

So much so that it's my ring-tone, and I can play it on the piano.

The level design was amazing, The chalenges were hard but not impossible (took me forever to find that last small key to fight shadow link), the music made you fell immersed in the game, and when you finished it you felt like you accomplished something.

For. It's. TIME.

I'm sorry you aren't going to have the same starry eyed experience the nintendo fanboys of the late ninties had at seeing and playing this game for the very first time... Just not...The first 3D zelda game is not somthing to sniff at lightly and turn your head away for poor graphics and fiddly controls, you have to turn back the clocks and imagine.

hmmm.... Excellent level design, brilliant immersion, a leap in graphics for the zelda series, had unique gameplay controls (introduced Z-targeting), A great story, which finally explained Ganondorf's motive (as if it wasn't clear). I didn't play it until after I had played Wind Waker, and while it isn't the greatest game of all time, It is surely one of those games which changed the entire Landscape of gaming as a whole.

The term greatest game of all time is so ambiguous that it becomes difficult to define exactly what it means. It just so happens that more people think this is the greatest game of all time than any other.

At the time, everything about the game was revolutionary...mainly the game's scope. Prior to OoC, no game(could be wrong) had as expansive, realized and alive a world. That may have faded in hindsight, but the game also represents a huge part of this generation's childhood. Looking back, the world isn't as impressive and the story is standard, but for me (and I'm sure many others) the early memories of OoC of time can never be taken away. It doesn't hurt that the game has outstanding level design, and wonderful music and boss fights.

Its not that it IS great, its That it WAS great. The first ever 3D Zelda was like giving a toddler crack, a sudden shot of it ripped through their phsyche like a bullet.

I could go on for hours too about this game, being one of the first games I really played. Though my friends will argue with me about this for hours, I think this was the best RPG I ever played when I was about 8 or 9. That's right, in my eyes, it's an RPG. Not "Action/Adventure", makes it sound like another Land Before Time movie =/. Anyways...controls were amazing for their time, regions of the game were differing from river, to desert, to forest, to mountains, and the amount of time one could spend gathering all the heart pieces and finding all the bottles could leave a lasting impression on anyones memory. I adored this game so much that I think after Majora's Mask was made, the feel of the game went downhill. Twilight Princess made me die bit inside...I hope to high heaven that a new Zelda will be made that plays much more like OoT, and not a Wiied up version made to sell to the soggy mainstream masses.

The age I was when I initially played it (I was in grade 5 so however old I was- I have no idea) made it great.

The 3D immersion made it great as it was one of the first of it's kind for me, who was so used to 2D gaming.

For the time, it was an amazing game. I thoroughly enjoyed it and then some. It was long enough for me, played well and I really enjoyed the scenery; the forest, fire, water, shadow and spirit temples. The game just went everywhere I wanted it to and at my age I had no specific tastes developed yet. In fact, I'd say OoT was the first Zelda I really got into (though I'd played LttP first).

The moment I played a demo of it in Argos, I was in love with it. The Zelda I grew up loving but with AMAZING graphics and atmosphere.

Later found the level design, game systems, progression and side quests to be awesome but at it's time, the graphics just STUNNED me. Plus the first Christmas it was out, the game was harder to get than crack, which added a lot of the appeal (for most people).

What else can you say? It's just a 'magic' game for most people.

Aside from regular fun Zelda gameplay, it was cute. Cuteness drove the characters, and it made the world seem like a happy place.
