What puts someone in the category of Gamer (capital G)?
looking on escapist, it seems to be
-Love Half life/HL2
-Play Mass effect
-Play Fallout 3
-Find Halo Bland

although i dont hit all these categories (say what you want kids, halo is NOT bad, and i didnt find HL2 great), i still consider myself to be a Gamer (although i still advise playing HL becuase youll probably miss a load of references e.g. in stalker SoC when you find a dead guy called freeman)

now, from your perspective, what makes a (capital G)amer?

EDIT: sorry people, but i would like more specific than "Play games"
dont worry people cant hurt you via the internet

EDIT 2: This is mainly directed to the elitists who claim youre not a Gamer if you havent done XYZ
i would like to know what XYZ is

Plays video games.
Seriously, there isn't an elite group of gamers that are better than everyone else.

If I say anything other then play games, I'm going to get lynched. Repeatedly.

I think it's more of a cultural thing than simply how many games you've played.

You play video games, therefore you are a gamer. There isn't much else to it, unless you're referring to some kind of elitist super-group led by a direct decendent of Julius Caesar, Chuck Norris and Cthulu where members have to all follow a strict group opinion of which games are good or not and get booted off if they dare utter a differing opinion. In which case, good luck getting past entry; I hear they make you fight a walrus.

Play Mass effect and fallout 3 ? I'm sorry but if you've never played pong and if you've never played a snes game with the console(not an emulator) then you can call yourself a gamer all you want but if you go into a conversation about games with me without feeling anxious at the mention of battletoads/megaman/contra then you can gtfo. tbh I would consider someone a true gamer even if they've never played anything past the atari. I'll admit I'm quite the elitist old school or no school type when it comes to games and todays generation of "gamers" quite depresses me.

A gamer is someone who plays games. None of this 'gamer culture' bullshit, that is frankly embarrassing.

If you paint, you're a painter. If you drive, you're a driver. If you eat, you're an eater. Gaming is no different. There are no prerequisites other than that.

A capital G gamer actually makes sense.

But I haven't played any of those games. owning a current gen console does not make a gamer. That's retarded. If you keep up with Industry news, care about it, think about gaming when not playing, critique the games you do play, have more than Peggle, then you are a Gamer.

A gamer must adhere to a strict code.
Meals: Ramen noodles and mountain dew.
Attire: May only wear shirts that come from special edition or preordered games.
Friends: Must keep everybody at a distance and put all focus on games.
Hours: At least 18 hours a day on games MINIMUM.

Seriously though,

Anyone that considers themselves a gamer is a gamer, I mean no one else would....!

I've been playing video games all my life but I never used that term until recently, recently meaning 3 years ago.

I don't remember anyone referring to themselves as a gamer back in 2002, maybe the term was around and maybe even before that....I just wasn't a gamer yet..lol

Which also makes me wonder when the term began to get used..hmmm

I prefer to place gamers in different catagories depending on what games they play.
e.g. if a person plays halo or CoD or similiar, they're a FPS gamer
if a person plays a mario, sonic or similiar platforming game they are a platformer gamer.
the list goes on.

someone that owns a game console and can smartly talk about games. Not only if one is better then another, but even discuss how and why it's better then another

The use of the capital G actually makes sense. A gamer just has to play games, but a Gamer would have to:
- play games
- identify gaming as their main hobby
- have played at least some of the classic titles (Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Chrono Trigger, etc.)
- be able to analyze different aspects of games and intelligently discuss why one game is good and another is bad
