I have just came off Oblivion and it got me wondering What makes a good rgp game is it the weapons, the freedom, the armour/ clothing, the enemies or just the game itself ? post your thoughts

Being a console gamer since the original Nintendo and having played RPG's most of that time, I'm biased towards JRPG's. Yeah yeah laugh it up you Yahtzee fanboys, the current gamer generation are spoiled now that RPG's developed in North America have got their shit together (Baldurs Gate, FAMOUS for integrating JRPG like Storytelling back in the day, before that all you had were blase dungeon crawls in samey medieval fantasy worlds), but back then Japan was all we had and I still thank them for it and continue to like their games. I like RPG's for their Story, Length and Depth and only occasionally for their gameplay. Call me old fashioned but I read alot, and having RPG's which are like playable, somewhat interactive novels kicks ass.

i would think it would be immersion(sp) to really make it good you have to feel like your in the game this is something that oblivion failed at because of it's horrendous dialouge

While an RPG is obviously story based, this needs to be used to make the story driven by more than just the one character you walk around with.

Take you're FF7, at what point was say, Tifa absolutely neccesary to the plot? She was there to look good and be a choice for Cloud, she was unique but needless. (I'll probably get corrected on this point but meh)

The point I'm getting at here is, character's need depth which is getting harder to find outside of the FF series (irony).

Also, enemies need to be more original than dragons,ogres and golems of lava.

Morrowind's dialogue wasn't any better but it was still very well done. You need a relevant story and something fairly new and/or intuitive (I still hold Chrono Trigger up as one of the best RPGs ever for the weird barely explicable time travel and no random encounters on an overworld map).

Wow... I can tell you decided that by playing the game yourself and certainly not from watching a certain video...

Also you spelt Raccoon wrong (Shouldn't bother me but Raccoons are one of my favourite animals)

RPGs could do without androgynous characters, I'm always very unsettled by how every human in final fantasy tactics is like this, and often have names that don't really explain what gender they are (and If they do mannage to defeat some super monster I'll be like "Yeah! go that guy... or girl...")

Wow man, next time you form an opionion, play the game instead of quoting ZP.
Anyways...on topic, I think that characters, story and gameplay can make or break an RPG.
The two main reasons that I became voraciously addicted to KOTOR were Hk-47 and his quips, and the kickass combat ( force lightning FTW.)

Well I think the option to be good or evil (and I don't mean WoW style) I mean proper "I'm a dwarf but every other dwarf hates me" style. Were you get quest/missions that can make people hate you, or even better you can just walk into villages and massacre them out of pure boredom then steal some food and have a picnic.

yea i know yahtzee said that but it is true having a beggar talking about the tiber septim hotel(the most expensive hotel)in a posh voice then going back to her scraggly voice.
I agree that the dialouge doesn't make or break a game but it sure helps, i mean the combat and weapons were good so was the magic system even if the story wasn't very good, i still think its a good game just could have done better to prove i played it mehrunes dagon did it. and the fallout series was a good rpg series cause it had a good story,combat and humor and i really couldn't find anything wrong with it.

as for the raccoon/racoon thing they are both right cause i think they are spelt differently in different parts of the world.

edit: i forgot 'bout punctuation sorry

No it's not.

An RPG game (a role playing game game?) needs to have some kind of furry little creature that follows you around for the sole purpose of being endearing.

Eh my mistake then, but i've always spelt it that way so im afraid i won't be changing.

But is there a RPG that features a racoon? if so do tell.

The only rpg i played where a "fluffy" animal was involved(the folllowing part) was dogmeat from fallout and he wasn't really furry and little, more large and vicious.

Good writing. I don't care how large the gameworld is or customizable a character is, if the story, dialogue, and general atmosphere is good I'll be happy. The problem I have with games like Oblivion is that they seem like they make more content than they have writing for, so you wind up with hundreds of NPCs with drab, sameish dialogue and vast wildernesses that don't really add anything besides more room to be bored in. The better way to add weight, in my opinion at least, is to just come up with more interesting little stories and sidequests, or make existing stuff more complex and involved. If that means the game needs another shack or peasant to play out, so be it. Planescape: Torment proved to be one of the most respected RPGs in history and it took places mostly in a small city area with seven potential party members.

To me an RPG needs a sense of grand adventure, doesn't matter whether jrpg or thick necked american just a sense that you are in a big world thats yours to explore.
