That is perfectly within your rights to hold that view, and I can respect people who are willing to be true pacifists even to the point of not fighting back, even when their own life depends on it.

"Sticking to you guns" to use slightly ironic idiom.

It is a pet peeve of mine that so many people take to heart some of the most misleading and incorrect "facts" out there about guns.

No, not at all. If they are misinformed you should point them to the real facts about guns and hope they take a good look at it.

I try, but most people want a soapbox, not a debate. I find few that are willing to listen to opposing views and make concessions, even fewer that are willing to change their viewpoint no matter how overwhelming the opposing evidence is.

Well then, all you can do is continue with the facts because if you even change one mind, it's a success. Besides, your profile says you are American and we will never lose our guns here in America and you can thank us Texans for that.

I lived in Texas for years. It is actually easier to get a gun and a carry permit in the state I live in now then it is in Texas.

Funny that with Washington being a fairly liberal sate and all.

I dislike guns in games and *especially* IRL. They take all the skill out of fighting, they make murder, rape, robbery, assault, and other violent crimes easier, and they are one of the major causes of death amongst young people in America today. Plus guns in games either make the game dull (most first- and third-person shooters), easy (Fable 2), or are ridiculously underpowered (FFT, Disgaea).

But I have to admit that there are few better objects for personal safety

Well that's just a gun safety obviousness. Yes, it's hard to get a gun in Texas, but that's the point. But we also love our guns and we will continue to ensure that America will have guns.

Being on the Escapist, I've noticed that there are a lot of gun nuts, and I suppose I can call myself an amateur gun nut as well. So I'm going to ask what makes guns so appealing (or not appealing) to you?

Please note that I'm not trying to start a flame war or offend anyone. I don't condone violence and I am a pacifist myself.

Anyhoo, what makes me so fond of our explosive friends is the fact that modern firearms are kind of a mark of how far we've come, to be able to create a tool that can efficiently blast metal and explosive cartridges at super speeds and with ridiculous power, I just find it very interesting I suppose. It also doesn't hurt that guns often times look bad-ass.
Its a pet peeve of mine when guns fire bullets. =]
When guns fire bullets at people, you mean? A bullet could be fired and not cause damage, you know. Or maybe it's the noise for you. In which case; earmuffs :D
Lol, I just answered what makes a gun 'awesome' or 'bad' for me, I was talking specifically about games cause I read little other than the topic question and in games I prefer the guns which are different, that's what I meant by those that don't fire bullets.

they kill

as such "not awesome"

(I'm a pacifist)
So do knives, so do baseball bats, so do chairs, so do fists. People kill, guns are a tool.
*snip*
Guns are not evil, malicious, or anything other then tools in the hands of people.
but they are tools that were kinda sorta made to be used to kill, unlike the other things you mentioned ...except maybe knives...depending on the knife I guess...like butterknives dont count...I digress...
I get the point, they are made to propel a tiny metal slug at high velocity. The major function to wound and kill. That does not mean that you have to use them on people. Using them to hunt is a major purpose of them.
*snip*
I also don't want to hear any of that bullshit about hunting being evil, and hunters doing it only because they enjoy killing.
What I was getting at is that the gun itself cannot be guilty of anything it is basically a mechanical device and as such is incapable of being responsible for any action.
*snap*

Just hoping to give you a little perspective, cause when they say "guns don't kill people, people do" they are not just slinging around a catchy phrase.
Nothing against hunting really...and Im not trying to go around spouting crap about "how guns are the work of the devil" or anything...I just dont like killing or things related to it in any way, shape or form =/
in line with those feelings, i guess you are a vegan?*

As a weapons enthusiast I find guns to be quite awesome. I own guns, knives, etc. Any type of weapon is a tool just like most other tools they have multiple uses. The tool is used for many things. Hunting, target shooting, self-defense, and of course combat in a warzone. I am not a violent person, never have been nor will be, but I have always been fascinated by weapons. I always have been taught, and (now as I grow older) always impart to others who ask the great personal responsibility that comes with any sort of weapons owning. Negligence can/and does get people killed. Spiderman's famous catch phrase goes into real effect for anyone who owns a firearm. They hold great power in their hands and thus should shoulder the great responsibilities that come with that power.

Not a fan of guns at all. I just don't see the skill in it. I mean sure it would take some training to be more accurate and so on but I still don't appreciate the fact that you could have spent 3 years training in firearms and yet get shot by a kid that you didn't see.

Melee weapons are a fair bit more skill based and there is a need to be talented in them or you're very likely to die. Even archers need a lot of skill to hit a target and if they miss the target is aware and they're only gonna have a few hurried shots before the target gets too close and have to try their luck at melee. Plus melee/archers got a lot of respect (or honour) for their skills.

Oh! Ok. I get it now. Yeah, it is pretty cool to see guns which don't fire bullets in games. Nothing beats a good laser rifle :D

While guns are awesome for some people (John Lajoie as 'MC Vagina'), I personally dislike them for the same reason that song is titled what it is (I Kill People)

Funny in jokes, yet tragic in real life.

I love guns because.....well Im not like one of those people who say that "I like melee weapons better because they make me feel like a ninja from an anime cartoon" bullshit.

Logical reason for liking guns: If 2 people got in a fight and one had a sword and the other had a gun, Im pretty positive Id want to be the guy with the gun.

Personal Reason: Guns have many different varieties, they are powerful and dangerous, and they are fun as fuck to use.
