What Makes PC Controls so Great?

It just boils down to what you are used to. If you spend more time on PC, you'll feel more comfortable with a mouse and keyboard set up for your games, and vice versa.

controller in any FPS with sensitivity up 7-9 and I will match any mouse player of similar experience level. Much less something like halo that requires copious amounts of precision and crouch jumping for quick navigation. I even use controller for any PC game I play WASD is about as clunky as it gets imo.

That said someone who sinks 100s of hours into something like counter strike could prolly outdo someone using joysticks. But I don't think its as big of an advantage as portrayed. Unless you both just see each other the exact same time then any advantage is nulified,

Which is funny, Since I'm infinitely better at aiming on a console than my PC.
That's simply practice.
I've used a mouse for 4+ years, and I can't aim with joysticks worth a ****.
But joysticks just aren't as accurate as an 1800DPI infrared sensor (aka my Deathadder), they rely on mechanical stuff, I believe. I took apart my Logitech Dual Action to find a metal housing with two curved metal axis that are reading the movement of the joystick.

Unparalleled precision aiming with mouse, comfortable movement scheme (WASD, usually) that can be changed depending on preference, more potential special buttons then you'll ever need, including the extra ones many gaming mouses have.

And it all tends to be customizable to a fair degree.

I can't think of a game I'd rather play using a controller than using 'board and mouse. Sure, for novelty value, it's fun to play fighting games on consoles every once in a while, but for everything else I prefer PC controls.

So what I've gathered is that the controller is better for movement, and the mouse is better for aiming. Then that would mean... oh shit they're equal.

really the big thing with the keyboard is that you have more buttons at your disposal. there for the devs can make more complex control schemes which allows for more play strategies, that's really all it is.

Mouse has accuracy, but controllers have strafing. I'm fine with either for shooters. But my PC can properly play RTS games. Console controllers can't.

A mouse gives much better precision as has been stated 20 times or more in this thread already. It's not down to preference, let's be honest a PC gamer with a mouse sniping against a console gamer of equal relative skill with his analog stick who's going to win? The PC gamer. They don't have auto aim because console aiming is overly accurate.

I feel that PC controls give better control overall, since you have more buttons and most all games allow to customize your controls (which isn't true for all console games for some reason). This also pretty much blocks off all serious RTS games (looking at you Halo Wars) and many RPGs from consoles since you simply don't have enough control over your character. I mean right now a significant majority of console games are shooters or games that are made up of quicktime events. A lot of people are saying strafing is better on consoles, but I still give that advantage to a mouse since you use that to direct the angle you move in not WASD. I guess analog sticks have better control over your characters speed, though it seems you're always crouch walking or running full speed ahead in FPS games anyways. And of course you can use an actual keyboard to type words, to which a console keyboard isn't even comparable.

Yes there are advantages to consoles over PCs etc etc but controls are definitely not among them. I do own consoles as well as a PC which about sums up how biased this post probably sounds.

Some mouses may be precise...but Ive never seen them. I am fine with a controller in my hand. Most of the time my hands feel weird on a PC, since they are either to the side or some crap. Ive come to respect WASD controls though, but controllers are more comfortable for me, and simpler, and more intuitve.
My real problem is just PC gamers wont allow the thought that not everyone is them enter their heads. What works for you does not work for everyone. That applies to EVERYTHING in anything ever.

Well it depends on the game.

I find that PC gaming's best for two types of games. FPSs because the mouse has more precise control (for me, at least) and the giant amount of buttons for RPGs. A lot of RPGs have a huge amount of spells, potions, and attacks that can really only be easily done with a keyboard. For all other games, I usually go console.

A pro maybe, but just as big a con. Complex does not mean better. It just means complex. I can reach every button I need on a controller without moving my hands everywhere, and less danger to learning what they do. A ***** when I accidentally hit say, H and it completly alters my screen or something. The simplicity of controllers is a good thing.

Ignoring the obvious, that is it is easier to be more precise for aiming in both fps and rts (without auto aim 'cheats') and the fact that games with skill bars can't be served by controllers with at best 10 buttons.
In my opinion the main benefit of the keyboard and mouse combo is the size factor. Look I'm a 30 year old tall white guy with big old hands. The original xbox 360 controllers where along the right idea but I find even them too small. Yes I know I could probably find a specialist job which isn't made for an 8 year old boy, but with a keyboard and mouse I dont have to..

But honestly the game itself drives the best input device.

Because you have very much buttons and mouse, it's much more than usual controler has.

I'll quote Carmack:

"keyboard + mouse is still the best way to play a first person shooter ? fundamentally, it's just better. It's direct positioning, it's directly correlating motion to something in the game, rather than forcing you to time-integrate over some fractional motion thing ? kinesthetically, it's better, and that's still something that consoles aren't going to be adopting."

I'm royally biased being a proud member of the PC gamer master race, but i'll agree with what other people have said here. It's easier to aim in FPS games, it allows for much greater options for how you want to play games in hoetkey selection, and it allows for "real RPG" games to be played to a far greater depth than they can reach on console games because of the greater degree of options.

In my experience, two facts affect which control solution is "superior". The first, is how the game was designed. Different games had different control solutions in mind. The second, is preference and familiarity. As a PC gamer, I couldn't use a game pad controller to save my virtual life. I recall playing Halo back in the day (you know, the X-box?).

According to a onlooker, I aimed in a triangle, and were downright sluggish. Cue a few weeks later, when I had installed Halo for the PC. I were running around the Truth and Reconciliation with the Sniper Rifle, handling it like a oversized bolt-action rifle.

So, while I could call myself partial to mouse/keyboard, I suppose that with enough time and familiarity, I could play FPSs on a console.

I sometimes play Cod 4 with a plug-able controler, the thing is it just makes me slightly worse, but I usually still top the server :D (Scratches own back)
