My retort is this: Martin makes the darks darker in the Song, and therefore the dismal, gloomy, barely-visible lights are nearly fluorescent.
A Song of Ice and Fire isn't the same Mary-Sue plotline I've seen in all the other fantasy novels I've read (excluding a select few) and the characters are starkly different (No pun intended). I derive pleasure and happiness out of reading about these characters; these creatures who are so different from one another, with personalities that are strong and well-developed. I was saddened when the Hound died, when Daenerys was named "Mother" by the Dothraki--it almost made me feel as if I had experienced it myself. Martin creates a world that I can fall into by just reading it. No games, no MMOs, no graphics or anything of the sort--just by reading alone. Escaping from the world I am in at this moment and making my exodus to one wherein one of the darkest fantasies of the genre is told--a world in which Martin never fails to continually surprise me in its depth, detail and plot twists--is a feeling I have trouble matching. Call it gritty, call it dirty, call it downright black at times, but it's real. Hide behind "but fantasy isn't real", but the more real the feel of the story, the more you are actually a part of the story.
And I feel very much engaged in the Song.
The comment on WoT is more just one of those things readers get. Most people who read a lot have one or two series they just downright worship. Mine is WoT.
Its an interesting perspective you have. I have to agree I like the divergence from the norm. Every time I though I had the series figure out something changed, some died, or came up with a masterful plan which changed the dynamic. 4 books in and I think I finally have a reasonable grasp of where the series is heading. Certainly the deaths of many of the characters are done in such a way that allows you to relate, either through their eyes or someone sufficiently close for you to really feel the moment.I felt horrified and betrayed which is an amazing achievement for a book, and also why I refereed to the emotions the way I did.I remember the massacre at the Twins
