I'm thinking about starting Boxing soon and possibly doing Krav Maga next year and I was wondering what experience my fellow Escapists had to offer or any advice regarding these two or any other forms of martial art also general discussion thread regarding it.

I've never taken classes or received formal training in any forms of martial arts, however I'd like to think that I would be good at Tai-Kwon-Do if I tried. I guess I have strong legs, can run fast, and kick reasonably hard.

I don't think I could give you any advice other than good luck and kick some ass...

My self defense basically amounts to "kick em in the balls and run".
Not the best line of defense to live life through.

I personally really wanna learn kick boxing though. :I
I will watch this thread, as I am quite interested.

I'm not proficient in any form of self-defense. I've been in fights, but let's face it, that doesn't mean much in the end.

I've taken Tai Kwon Do in Middle School for 3 years; but it was more of a "Workout" class and I didn't realize it then. Took Kendo in High School and some in College but I never used it in a straight up fight.

In the future I'd LOVE to take Krav Maga

I have almost 2 years of Kung Fu under my belt. Krav Maga and boxing are 2 very different styles. Boxing will teach you jabs and body blows whereas krav maga is about take downs and submissions.

I was in judo from around 9-10 until 15 or so...got to a blue belt with a brown stripe, I couldn't get full brown until I was 16, and legally allowed to compete with chokes and armbars. It was a lot of fun though, I miss it quite a bit now, especially the competition, fighting throughout western Canada.

Besides a year or two of wrestling in school, nothing formal. I've practiced MMA with my older brother who does cage fighting.
In sparring matches with training weapons I do very well. So if I get into pickle, I will grab the nearest thing and swing it like a boss.

I have a black-belt in Karate, I know basic Muay Thai, I know basic Kickboxing, and I was forced to take a self-defense course in GR9 gym.

I also have Naginata and Bo staff training.

If you're trying to choose a martial art I might be able to help.
Karate: fighting off multiple attackers quickly and efficiently; medium amount of counters in counters; large emphasis on pattern memorization and strength
Tai-kwon-do: fighting off 1-3 attackers quickly and precisely; lots of counters and variations of kicks; large emphasis on precision strength
Judo: fighting off few attackers; lots of counters; large emphasis on throws
Muay Thai: fighting 1 attacker at once; few counters (i think); large emphasis on using brutal strikes with elbows and knees to quickly subdue an opponent

Did Tae Kwon Do from mid-elementary school to 8th grade. I became a brown belt w/ black stripe, just a month away from becoming a black belt...then the dojo I went to went out of business, meaning if I ever want a black belt, I either just buy one, with custom stitching with my name in it and everything (just to feel complete, even if it is "cheating") or start all over from white belt in a new dojo (which I don't have the time or money for). I'd personally like to do both, or at least just the first one and re-read and re-practice the moves and routines I learned a while ago. Call me "lazy", I don't care.

Sadly, a part of the reason I never got it is that I started slacking off, not coming nearly as often. I always feel really bad whenever I think about it, and wish I could do it over again.

To kind of make up for it, my school does have a karate class, so I might get into that. Who knows?

I've practiced Karate and Tai-kwon-do for 6 years and it really helps me stay focused during my boring job. Of course I'll spend my entire month doing a gigantic project without any help I wont get any credit for, sir!

I'm a junior black belt in Tai-Kwon-Do.(You have to be 16 to test for a real black belt) I love doing it and recommended it to anyone.

I've been known as the following:
Ball Cruncher
Testicle Piercer
Jewel Stealer
Scrotum Cancer
Ninja

and

"Oh-god-please-dont-kill-me-im-sorry-for-trying-to mug-yoAAGAGAHHHAGAGAG"

Edit: I forgot to mention that I am a 3rd Black Belt in TKD (which isn't very impressive since it is like declaring yourself the king of Nigeria since it is a democracy), but have been practicing other defense techniques with my older sibling (who is in Korean Marine Officer Corps) and my father (who was in the mandatory 2 year draft in the Korean military). I also know which parts of the human body to hit and not get hit, most of them by experiencing first hand ranging from mild pain to slight agony.

I have had 4 years of training Shaolin Kenpo.

It's my only physical exertion and it has made a great difference actually.

I know the amazing art of running the fuck away and hiding. >.>

Seriously though, I took a bit of Kenpo, Ninjutsu (more specifically, Taijutsu and Intonjutsu though all forms go into it universally) with a spiritual study and code teachings of Bushido.

Lovely and quite majestic forms of martial arts in a lot of ways. Just be careful of the teacher you get. >.>

I took Tang Soo Do in high school. It's a Korean martial art and is a little different than Tai-Kwon-Do. My instructor tried to keep things practical, though. He always wanted us to kick high in class, but also said we would never actually kick higher than an opponents waist. He also went over a lot of topics. From pressure points, to grapples, to throws, to knife defense, and one steps. It was basically meant for true self defense. I was actually one belt below black before I quit.

Interesting note: Chuck Norris uses this style. In fact, Chuck Norris taught my teacher's teacher. For what that's worth. [sub]probably nothing[/sub]

I think it's spelled Tae Kwon Do, not Tai Kwon Do :p

I've been doing Tae Kwon Do and grappling for nearly 4 years. I've found that even martial arts styles have their own style. World TaeKwonDo Federation (WTF Tae Kwon Do) has a strong emphasis on sparring. International TaeKwonDo Federation (ITF) has a strong emphasis on forms and I believe International TaeKwonDo Alliance (ITA) is a mix-mash on both focuses.

What I would do, try everything, think you don't like it, move to something else. There is like, 7 Tae Kwon Do schools within walking distance by my house.
