I have to go with Skyrim or New Vegas. I would have gone with Bioshock, but that was '07. I suppose Borderlands 2 or Farcry 3 would have helped too, particularly the latter.

To be honest, the wide spectrum of free-roaming, parkour, gunplay, customization, and humor in Saints Row IV would definitely appeal to my mentality, but it's hard to make a fair assessment given how much of my mentality has been shaped by games in the first place!
I personally would have gone with Saint's Row: the Third. The superpowers are fun, but make it not only less practical to use vehicles (since you can outrun them) but significantly harder to do the quick enter into vehicles (jumping through the window) since you can't turn off super sprint. Or can you? Please tell me if you can because I'd love to be able to do that.

Anyway: I'm only 18, so I can fairly accurately account for what has made me who I am now. I really can't tell what game would get me into gaming because video games have been one of the, if not the, single greatest driving forces behind my personality so far (I was 2 (&10 months) when my elder brother got an N64, haven't looked back since). If it wasn't for a shared interest in games I wouldn't have met the guy who introduced me to tabletop games (as we both enjoyed Dawn of War), and thus indirectly to all of the other people I've met through those hobbies who have been the driving force behind basically the rest of my personality.

Assuming my some magic I'm more or less who I am now, just sans video-games, I'd probably really get into them through Rome: Total war (the classic or the more recent one. Either is excellent), Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (though I doubt I'd be able to go back and enjoy Red Alert 2 as much if I started with 3), or Saint's Row the Third. Sweet-ass strategy game, Sweet-ass rts (of the more traditional base building variety), and the funniest goddamn game I've ever played.

I think any of em would get me into video games as a whole, as It's difficult to imagine any of those games not doing just that given my personality.

I think The Walking Dead game would get me into gaming. Not only is it based on a TV show that I was watching, but it doesn't have the issues Dragon Age has with being user-friendly/simple to understand. So I think The Walking Dead game would've gotten me into computer games.
That is a pretty good answer.

The problem with many of today games is that they are extremely complex and have a lot of systems on top of systems. If I never played a game before, it would be extremely difficult to get into a game like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Assassins Creed or Elder Scrolls. If I wanted to get into games, I would have to start with point and click adventure games (Walking Dead), simple platformers (Rayman Legends) or racing games (Burnout Paradise)

If I hadn't played games up till now, I'm assuming I'd still be into fantasy escapism. For the moment, I think Skyrim would provide a pretty good fantasy escapism fix, even though it's lost its appeal with the current me.

Hmm...

Probably Rayman Origins/Legends or perhaps one of the more recent Pokemon games like Black and White. Both kinds of games I imagine are pretty easy to get into for someone who hasn't played very many video games.

That's kind of an impossible question to answer, since the personality I have now is shaped by the media I've consumed throughout my lifetime, including videogames.
This is a very relevant point, though I'd imagine that nobody would know your potential non-gaming personality better than you.

I actually think I'd likely be a very different person had I grown up without video games. Maybe even one of those "dudebros" everyone around here always hates on, because most of my free time was spent playing games in one form or another, and without that I probably would've picked up sports or drama or something instead. Maybe I would've just read even more than I already did and still not been particularly sociable, who knows?

So... it's a tough question. I doubt I'd have the patience for anything like Dragon Age: Origins, The Witcher, or Mass Effect, but I can't rightfully say that I'd be interested in something like Sonic Generations, which is the answer I'm leaning closest toward at the moment, because it's fast-paced, has a bit of challenge without being terribly hard, gets right to the point with its story and doesn't bog everything down in cutscenes and exposition, and has pretty tight controls and level design.

Failing that... it would probably be something indie, like Bastion, Gunpoint, Legend of Grimrock, The Stanley Parable, maybe Trine 2. Things which are pretty limited and focused in their directive but damn good at what they do.

this is a good question, and a tough one for me, considering video games have been a huge part of my life for over 30 years.

Considering I would still have a love for Sci-Fi I'd have to go with the Mass Effect series. If I was in a fantasy mood I'd probably like Skyrim.

Now funny thing about those games is I haven't actually played them yet. Since I play so many smaller games that I don't have the time to spend on long RPG's anymore. But considering after all this time of ignoring video games, it would probably take the epic scale of these games to turn my head.

Borderlands 1

I was raised off of old copies (Gen Y here, dear lord were the 90's weird) of Cadillacs & Dinosaurs and Mad Max/Road Warrior (not including Beyond Thunderdome, fuck Thunderdome) from my dad, so I felt an attachment right away to the sparse, sandy wasteland that was the setting of Borderlands 1 (specifically BL1; the sequel was fun but just not the same, both setting and story-wise).

*EDIT*: Fixed some typos and grammar. Stupid, stupid, stupid...

As an introdution into gaming? hmm

I'm not sure ... I mean it depends entirely on what interests people. If I had to pick an introduction to gaming for myself then I would want it to be one of the following. Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect (2 I guess.. because of that five year rule of yours), Deus Ex Human Revolution, Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag, Bioshock Infinite, Skyrim.

Hopefully my answer to this question can soon be Torment: Tides of Numeneria

P.S. Everyone that owns a pc should at one point in their life play Planescape Torment.

That's a tough one. Probably Portal 2 or Antichamber, but I can't say for sure. Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Fallout, and Arkham City could all have pulled me kicking and screaming into gaming.

Knowing me, though; it'd probably be something really weird like Goat Simulator.

does Bioshock count?

cause you know...it did it for me
This is pretty much the response I would give, for the same reason. Even though it might be a little bit of a stretch to call Bioshock a modern game, I'd say it isn't overly rule-bendy to do so.

Bioshock is the game that got me into gaming. I mean, sure, I'd played a few casual games here and there before that, but I was nowhere near what one would call a "gamer" (which I define as 'a person who plays games as a hobby'). Fast forward to today, and gaming is my primary hobby. Couple that with the fact that Bioshock has also greatly influenced how I approach the entire medium, and I'm not sure what other answer I could give.

EU4 most likely, and if not that, XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

But there are many other who would make me stay.

If i never started gaming then probably none of them. I have little time to spare and i assume that i wouldn't have spent so much money on a gaming rig if i had no intention on using it for games. I doubt that i would buy a good PC or a console just to gamble and see if i'd like it. If some game could catch my eye then it would probably be something simple and fun, like gta or saints row. Or world of tanks since half of my office plays that damned thing.

Dunno, I'm such a no-lifer I'm not sure what my personality would even be without games. :p

Seriously, though... hmmm...
Skyrim, Bioshock, Portal, Dragon Age.

Definitely the Arkham games. I've always liked Batman even if I haven't been a die-hard fan of the comics etc and like with the Wolverine Origins tie-in game, the Arkham series seemed to have better represented Batman than any of the recent movies. Nothing against the Nolan films...I just don't like them personally and don't see them as being proper representations of Batman compared to the Arkham games representations. As for a game series that would make me fall in love with gaming; probably Just Cause 2. I can go anywhere, by any means, and blow shit up!? Fuck yeah I want to get in on that!

I would say Fez and the Puppeteer. Of course since Pokemon still does releases I would probably be encourage to play games from them as well.

Umm....Skyrim I supposed, and perhaps FE:Awakening.

-Mass Effect
-Dragon Age
-Guild Wars 2

I got into gaming thanks primarily to Roller Coaster Tycoon, but I fell in love with gaming thanks to Warcraft 3.

In the past five years? Hmm. Good question.

I suppose, t'were I to ramble off some kind of list, say, it might look something like this:

Dota 2
Titanfall
Terraria
Torchlight 2
FTL
Left 4 Dead 2
Sins of a Solar Empire
Portal 2
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Outlast
Dead Space

Given my propensity for competitive games, interesting and/or unique narratives, well-told narratives, quirky or brain-bending challenges, strategy gaming, exploration and discovery, architectural design and engineering, hard-and-soft sci-fi stories and settings, sci-fi or "claustrophobic/lonely" horror, and comedic wit, any of those listed above would have likely piqued my interest in video games. Enough at least to get me to try my hand at other titles.
