Schindler's List. It was very confronting. Mind you, most films with even a hint of sad/emotional scene will make me start crying.

I'm going to say Castaway, with Tom Hanks, and thats because I was like 8 years old, and my parents had just divorced, and I cried when he lost Wilson in the ocean. ;(

Freakin' Disney movies man.
Recently Toy Story 3, but, well generally half the Disny lineup (half the animated stuff, not the teeny crap)

District 9 too, not sadness but, I got really really into it, and no movie has made my heart race quite as much. It was AWESOME!

Definitely Toy Story 3.

I mean I've cried in films before and to me a good sob outweighs joy and tension in terms of emotional impact. But I grew up with those characters, throughout my entire life I've constantly rewatched the first two films.

So in the final scene of the film

When Andy, all grown up, was giving the toys (Just goes to show you that we can make emotional connections with anything) to the little girl I felt three predominant things. First was great sadness which resulted in crying at the fact that it truly was the end of an era and this was the last hoorah for Andy and his toys. Second was incredible nostalgia with each toy that he brought up from the box and described and third was great happiness and resolution as the toys would be happy and safe for another childhood.

I Am Sam was the first that came to mind. That movie has a mix of everything.
And the part when he goes to see her at her foster home, and she screams "I hate you!" And Sam is just crushed, the first time I saw that it just killed me to watch.

Secondhand Lions

This movie gave me excitement, humor, sadness, and a lot of other emotions all flowing seamlessly together. It really got me when Hub finished telling his Africa story, then again when Jasmin the Lion did her thing (no spoilers, GO SEE IT!)

*remembers what happened and cries*

DON'T LOOK AT ME!

The way Christopher Nolan closed both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. No tears, but I felt an immense upheaval of enthusiasm and pride. Very powerful endings for me.

Titanic... I laughed so much at the end...

In all seriousness, most Pixar movies have that moment that makes me feel pretty bad, but then it is usually followed up by humour.

Donnie Darko and I am Sam.

I am Sam was just really sad (obviously)

And Donnie Darko is my favourite movie of all time, and I don't want to be one of those people who are like
"That movie really spoke to me"
but....it did have a big impact on me.

The first time I saw Star Wars I was obsessed with it for years because of how exciting it was. Now I despise the movies.

Although I could pick any movie that has made me cry, I would probably have to only pick two films, both of which are directed by Darren Aronofsky:

1.) Requiem for a Dream. The tragedy in this film is almost Shakespearean. Four unlucky souls harnessed by the addictions they have, each of them spiraling down into their own personal hell. I had to cry, mostly due to the strength of it's actors (ESPECIALLY Ellen Burstyn who was fucking robbed of her Oscar award), but mostly because things like that actually happen, and no other movie has ever really had the balls to convey it with such grit and realism to make it emotionally lasting. It's a movie that emotionally affects you, whether you want it to or not.

2.) The Fountain. While Aronofsky's Requiem gave emotions of trauma and a psychological disturbance, The Fountain left emotions of beauty, mostly because of the visual effects. It's one of the rare movies that uses visuals in order to provoke emotion rather than just show off a technological hard-on. Although each scene has a strangely luminescent golden glow, the most spectacular scenes take place in the spaceship which makes its way into a nebula, with golden clouds thundering in the background as our main character bodes tearful farewells to his deceased loved one. It's artsy, definitely, but it just kept me up at night at how god damn beautiful the fucking movie is.

I haven't seen The Wrestler yet (Which was also directed by Aronofsky) but I have a feeling I'll love it as well.
I fully agree (although i'd have problems calling Requiem for a Dream realistic), especially the things you said about Burstyn. Her little monologue about wanting to have a reason to get up in the morning breaks my heart and grinds it to a fine powder, and when everything comes together in the end, i was literally stunned and completely overwhelmed the first and second time i saw it (and repeated viewings only made it slightly better)

And The Fountain...artsy, yes, but accepting death and letting loved ones go is always a big emotional thing, and if it is staged so beautifully with such a brilliant soundtrack, how couldn't you love the movie.

And the Wrestler...also very very emotional, a definite recommendation, although it is completely different from what Aronofsky did before, just so you know.

---

Other movies that i strongly responsed to emotionally:

- Grave of the Fireflies:
Holy shit it's concentrated sadness, and well written one at that. The many lighthearted moments in between only make it so much worse.

- Children of Men:
It's not as obviously emotional as the films above, but it's the little things and the dull despair that overshadows the whole movie is felt throughout.

- Blindness:
It feels very similar to Children of Men, and shows the potential of humans to do good, but so much more how humanity can be selfish, mean and downright evil.

That movie made me cry. And about an hour before I was supposed to go out with buddies. It was an odd day.
This. Made me cry. First thing I thought of when I saw the thread title.

Makes every other movie listed here seem pathetic... as far as sadness...
