I just really love Equilibrium.

It's amazing on so many levels.
I really like that film too, but it was released to much *meh*-ness... (s'like Shawshank Redemption, best viewed in retrospect, though unlike that film, I liked Equilibrium from the off... *shrug*)

I'm probably gonna be absolutely hated for this, but I really enjoyed Equilibrium. I dunno why, but the whole dystopian future thing (while not new) combined with kick-ass action sequences and gun-play was totally awesome. And Sean Bean's role in it was far, far underrated.
Nope, you appear to be in good company if the first page is anything to go by...

OT: Since a few others have just listed, I'll separate by genres -

1. Military - A Bridge Too Far, Waterloo, Longest Day, Tora! Tora! Tora! & Stalingrad

2. Comedy - Spaceballs

3. Geekism - Life Story & Copenhagen

4. Sci-fi - Equilibrium, Inception, the Matrix (just the first one, mind), 1977-1983 Star Wars

5. Wuxia - Dragon Gate Inn (the original Taiwanese one), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Fearless & Red Cliffs

6. Swords 'n Sandals - Ben Hur, Spartacus & the 300 Spartans (Richard Egan, fuck you all!!)

7. Fantasy - LotR, PotC

... sure there're a whole load of others out there somewhere...

let me guess, you didn't read the first page of the threat? It gets named numerous times, it's a bit of a cult hit in the geek/nerd circles at least. And your right it's awesome. No hatred for you today. Might I redirect you to some threads about sexual orientation, feminism or racism?
I think I saw it once when I skimmed back over it. :)

Haha yeah, I steer clear of those threads. Even the most respectful of posters will have a virtual angry mob outside their proverbial house.

GREAT FILMS

Hot Fuzz (best action-comedy ever. Extremely well written and directed too)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (action scenes are a lot of fun!)
The Incredibles (easily Pixar's best)
The Prestige (far better than the over-rated Inception :p)
Die Hard (best action movie ever made)
District 9
Starship Troopers (Most people just don't 'get' why this movie is awesome)
2012 (I don't care what you say...I loved it!)
Terminator 2 (James Cameron...Y U NO MAKE GOOD MOVIES ANYMORE!?)
The Avengers (Joss Whedon...'nuff said)
Most Tarantino Films (they just have a unique 'style' to them that I find interesting)
Raiders of the Lost Ark

OVER-RATED FILMS

Inception (Dark Knight, Memento and The Prestige are all superior movies by Christopher Nolan...he is better when he bases his movies from other people's writing)
Avatar
Titanic (what a snooze fest!)
Donnie Darko (OMG KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!)
Blade Runner (don't flame me...I only watched it recently after hearing it was 'teh best sci-fi movie evar!' and was disappointed. I am a HUGE sci-fi nut and Blade Runner just bored me)

That's all I can think of at the moment...all my opinion of course so if you don't agree with my list I don't care.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
It somehow manages to simultaneously be Heart-warmingly Uplifting and Crushingly Depressing.
Oh man, it may not be Jim Carrey's best performance ever, but it's certainly a testament to his acting ability. The premise and directing are really excellent too, though I think the writing is... a bit bland? It feels real enough, but it's not really the shining quality of that film. Gets kinda clunky and awkward too, though I know that was part of the point.

Most of my picks are taken already...
Eternal Sunshine
Lord of the Rings trilogy
Spaceballs
Snatch
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Pulp Fiction
Pirates of the Caribbean
Fight Club
Lot of Disney and Pixar films...

I'm surprised and disappointed that nobody has mentioned Serenity.

Spiderman. The original, not the upcoming "remake". Great casting, great special effects, and it stuck to the source material very well. While Spiderman 2 is good and all, it has some pacing issues (and the third movie is a wreck).

The Avengers. Never before to my knowledge has there ever been such a feat performed by Hollywood. To produce 4 movies (5 if you count Iron Man 2) that are all incredibly fun in their own way, with the intention of bringing all of protagonists together in a epic blockbuster movie... even if you're not a fan of the superhero genre, you have to admit that it was an incredibly ambitious concept. The fact that it stuck the landing and hinted at a sequel only makes it more awesome.

On a side note, I find it weird that people call movies overrated. Everyone has their own favorite movie and their own reasons for liking it. I'm not a big fan of The Shawshank Redemption, but I wouldn't call it overrated.

Moon (2009) is really, really good and really cheap on DVD. It's great.
So is "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".

I had my reservations but it turns out that the animated film Paprika is really good. It's probably the only film that I'd consider re-watching.

Inglorious Basterds..my favorite Tarantino film

DJango unchained also looks really cool
I would have to go with Inglorious Basterds as well. Even speaking as a military history major that is focusing on the Second World War. Tarantino shows more respect and attention to detail towards the actual history than quite a few 'serious' Second World War history movies do. Obviously I'm not talking about the exact historical events, just the whole setting and mood that he carefully constructs.

A couple of other movies I really enjoy are Letters From Iwo Jima, Brest Fortress (Russian film), Valkyrie (Yes, the one with Tom Cruise. The movie is actually fairly historically accurate. The only real problem is that they make out the conspirators motives to be a bit more noble than they really were. That and the movie was edited in such a way as to make you feel like the plot was closer to succeeding than it actually was.), Saving Private Ryan, Kingdom of Heaven, Downfall (German film that was made famous because that is where the 'Hitler rant' meme came from).

Really, I'm just a sucker for history movies. I'm fine with them as long as they aren't completely offensive from a historical standpoint. That doesn't mean they have to follow historical events exactly. It means that if they SAY that they are following historical events they better do a damn good job of it, but if they want to tell an original story in a historical setting (Inglorious Basterds, Gladiator etc.) then I'm cool with it.
