I don't listen to any particular music while I play games. I listen to that which comes next on my iPod which is some metal or rock.

the background music, I actually like to hear where things are coming from and listening to music while gaming is pretty detrimental...

Am I the only one who never hears any music at all while playing games? Games tend to have a soundtrack on their own, so why switch to another one?

Strategy= Epic metal or orchestral (with a herioc sort of tone e.g PoC music)
Shooters= METAL!
Platformer= soothing piano or techno sort of music
MMORPGS= even though I have given up on them now, pretty much anything because it was so boring!

For games like Tenchu, I usually go with something like Abingdon Boys School or maybe the occasional T.M.Revolution song.
For FPS games, I always find 3OH!3, Hadouken!, Cobra Starship or other such artists good. That's a seriously strange phenomenon if you ask me.
As for Sonic (because yes, I'm truly still a bit of a Sonic fangirl. It's been installed in me since birth, it's like a genetic disease) Crush 40 is really the only band to listen to.

What I do is I have the effects turned up on the games and yet the game music is off - I like to hear enemies but I like my own music too.

For racing games I tend to play electronica/breakbeat stuff, but for burnout/pure type games I tend to listen to metal.

FPS/strategy games tend to go well with my 'war list' (basically battle/power/viking metal, with heavier electrorock stuff)

Playing online shooters or when I used to play MMos I usually leave the game music on, unless I was grinding, in which case the general playlist sufficed.

RPGs deserve their ingame music, half the time it's part of the experience (apart from the Blue Dragon boss music...)

Pheonix by Butterfly Effect will forever remind me of Oblivion. We have two computers right next to each other and me and my brother would be playing Oblivion at the same time, and he would ALWAYS play that damn song!

I only listen to music if other people have theirs on and it's some obnocious pop-punk shit. And when that happens I put on some real punk music; Bad Brains, Agnostic Front, Black Flag, etc.

(How can this not have been done before?)

Anyway, I listen to Aria or Iron Maiden unless the game has music you can't turn off, or requires that I be able to hear things in the game.

I remember when I was playing BLACK for the XBOX that I would turn on some Korn.

Oddly, my performance rose REALLY high to the point I didn't even seem to get hit when listening to the music.

I listen to the game and nothing else. Sound designers these days in games are incredibly talented people and an incredible amount of work goes into producing the soundscape that most titles inhabit. I think I owe them at least my unfiltered attention, just as when listening to music I don't play video games or read a book to distract me from it. I appreciate things in full, thank you.

When playing that gem Shadow of the Colossus, I like to listen to Say Anything's A Walk Through Hell.( listen to it if you like the game,it really describes how far Wander would go to save Mono. )

WoW - Either Frank Turner or something equally lightish.
WoW - Grinding: Power Metal.
Fps - Nothing, need to concentrate on sound cues to locate enemies.
RPGS - Electric Wizard/Million Dead/Elvenking.
