I was going through the thread about dubstep and it got me wondering what musical genres are popular among the Escapists.

So, fellow Escapists, what music do you listen to and why? I would be grateful if you linked a specific song or songs that you are fond of.

Personally, I listen to reggae,jazz,hip-hop,dub,metal and dubstep.

you get respect for knowing the difference between 'dub' and 'dubstep'

I listen to a collection of most things: Rock, hip-hop, House, Dubstep, Folk music

the only genre's I don't really listen to are metal or punk since I've never been a particularly angry person I could never really connect with the music.

and as for linking a song, I'll link some hip-hop even though it's not the most obscure song.

I'll take this opportunity to shamelessly plug a favorite group of mine in an under-represented genre.

Here's a link to Heart of Courage, one of many great songs by Two Steps from Hell (classifed in iTunes as Classical):

I'm kinda all over the place.

Classical, metal, jazz, blues, and some other random rock genres if I find them appealing, and I do listen to musical songs if I feel so inclined.

There are a few I don't know what to classify as, like KMFDM and Front 242, but those too.

Classical, Jazz, Latin stuff ocassionally, comedic groups/artists like Arrogant Worms, Weird Al and Flight of the Conchords.

Oh and game music.

I have specific games I love for their music. Too many to list actually.

Generally vaguely rocky stuff. I've got few real preferences, but most of the stuff in my collection is some variant on rock.

Aesop Rock? My boy.

I listen to a bit of everything, and since my choice of hip hop was already linked, I'll return the favor.

Rock, like <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqCj9a_DSBc>this, <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJBRaEABBug>this, <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pKg0-bLPe8>this or <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vGTESkAZPg>this.
Metal, like <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSs4xfvATjc>this or <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEwfbKsO340>this.

Most of the time I listen to metal bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica & Megadeth, but I sometimes like to listen to other bands like Nirvana and Rise Against.

Anything which is good. I don't restrict myself to not enjoying something because it's from a particular genre. Sure, there are some genres I find myself liking more than others, but I can like anything from Johnny Cash to AC-DC, from Linkin Park to Beethoven. Though my preference in music will depend massively on how I'm feeling.

Maybe that makes me a boring and indecisive person...

Quite a lot of mathcore, and 8-bit style music. My more mainstream choices include metal & electronica.

I listen to mostly post-rock, some electronica and some regular rock; I also enjoy the type of music that is quoted below but it's always really hard to find any bands like that since they're often labelled as classical.

Metal, rock, blues, punk and ska punk mainly. I'm not fussy about other stuff really, but that's what I tend to listen to. My favourite bands being Anthrax [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT76uz21TNg], Mastodon [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAihDAJX8Ow], Streetlight Manifesto [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2yeNzL7rTU] and Thin Lizzy [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Qp9wPvcJwM]. I'm not sure if it was just my dad and his friends but I'm fairly certain everyone from Ireland is contractually obliged to love Lizzy. I'm no exception at all, they're pretty much the sound of my childhood. It's sad they tend to get overlooked (bit like Anthrax) next to the other bands that were around at the time, and just remembered for Whiskey In The Jar. Awesome as it was it's nowhere near as good as what they went on to do.
