For RPGs, I would recommend The Last Remnant and Fallout 3.

For FPSs and RTSs, basically what they said.

-CS:S
-OB of course
-World in Conflict is actually a pretty good rts, i got it recently
Crysis is fun, but it's one of those games where you make your fun. If you choose to go through only on maximum speed with one gun, that's your choice, you have to mix it up voluntarily.
-Age of Empires(any of them tbh)

EDIT: lol how could I forget! Thief of course! All 3! It's only my avatar and I forgot about them.

Hmm...
I must be being dense.... Ogre Battle?!
Orange Box, I think.
Seems so obvious now. Seconded on the Orange Box then I guess -> shame you've missed the £5.66 on Steam.

Don't get Crysis.
It's pretty, but it's hardly much fun.
The extent to which i disagree is immeasurable. Crysis is awesome. I would recc getting Crysis Maximum Edition as it has all 3 games.
Seriously? It just felt like another FPS.
I would say "generic FPS," but that is an utterly redundant statement.
I really enjoyed Crysis, but only first time through. I felt like all the 'it's a generic FPS' people (pretty much everyone it seems) are missing something. I saw a nice idea somewhere on this thread I think.. 'you make your own fun'.

I figured the ones that mattered when it came to choosing games weren't options; or, in the case of the processor, both were pretty good so it didn't matter. I assume he'll be getting the most RAM he can get.

Any of the Quake games. They all suck on console, are brilliant on PC, and are extremely simple and easy to pick up and play.

Would not suggest Quake 3 for the same reason I'd steer clear of Counter Strike -> it's the immediately being ray gunned in the eye.

True enough; I was mainly referring to the single-player ones, especially 2. God, I love that game.

The problem with Quake III is that, like you said, everyone who still plays it has been playing it for 10 years, and, as such, is preposterously good at it. That's where Quake Live comes in with its matchmaking, so you don't get railgunned in the eye from halfway across the map, half a second after spawning.

Deus Ex, and Invisible War (maybe). Invisible War had much more freedom in which factions you wanted to do stuff for, but much worse gameplay.

Also, Flatspace II. Don't bother with the original. The second has more gameplay, there's no story in either, and the second includes a game mode that's basically identical to playing the original game.

And I'd say try some Roguelikes. Okay, not roguelikes. Just play <a href=http://www.roguelikedevelopment.org/archive/index.php>Rogue. That link has a version of it for pretty much any platform you could dream of playing a game on, and an iPhone (if there's not one there) version can be found at the Apple Store for free.

And play STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl. Don't bother with Clear Sky, it sucked.

And play <a href=http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php>Iji. It's a sidescrolling 2d shooter/RPG with great gameplay and a very good story. Make sure to read all the data-thingies, they contain tons of interesting information about the two alien factions. The developer did a great job of fleshing out the world with them.

(All of the above games rest firmly in me "Best Games in the Universe" chapter of the "Best Things in the Universe" book. All below items do not, but are still good.)

<a href=http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=4017.0>Spelunky. Platformer with randomly generated levels. Very fun, but also very hard, and will feel unfair quite often.

If you like puzzle games, play Crayon Physics. Draw things, they become physics objects. It's great.

A game I'm just remembering from a long time ago, <a href=http://www.wolfire.com/black-shades>Black Shades. Very challenging gunplay. I found the combat to be similar to that of STALKER, in that it's very unforgiving on both sides, and you'll have to rely on quick reflexes and pure instinct to protect the VIP.

...

I dunno about time frames, but they're all good enough to be mentioned no matter what, so yeah.

I wouldn't compare Quake 3 to Counter-Strike... even if you stink with a rail gun, there are plenty of other weapons to use, and it's faster paced.

Besides, there's no need to EVER buy Quake 3 again since Quake Live is out.

My recommendation, get the id Super pack off Steam, plenty of goodness there.

Crimson skies-Europa 1490-BF2.

I think those are good games, they are to my taste, depends on what you like.

Its good to get away from the maintream and look for some more obscure ones, like Tropico!

Thats great, if in doubt just go to Gamespot and look at their ratings.
