Any of the Quake games. They all suck on console, are brilliant on PC, and are extremely simple and easy to pick up and play.
Would not suggest Quake 3 for the same reason I'd steer clear of Counter Strike -> it's the immediately being ray gunned in the eye.
In the case of Counter Strike it's just a matter of finding a proper server, wich I have found, thus I enjoy the game a lot.

Don't get Crysis.
It's pretty, but it's hardly much fun.
The extent to which i disagree is immeasurable. Crysis is awesome. I would recc getting Crysis Maximum Edition as it has all 3 games.
Seriously? It just felt like another FPS.
I would say "generic FPS," but that is an utterly redundant statement.
Yes, really, I loved it. The eye candy was just part of what makes it a great game. The power suit is just so fun. Switching between powers like that really adds a new element to the game. And if you mod the config file so you have unlimited power, so you can run like the flash as long as you want or punch like the hulk as long as you want, or eat bullets as long as you want, jump like superman etc.. yea. fun stuff

O.k Not sure what your preferances are so will go for a kind of my fav from each genre kinda thing.

Rpg) Morrowind or Kotor (Knight of the old republic)
Rts) Red alert 3 or Earth 2150 (oldie but goodie)
Fps) Halflife or Fear (1 or 2 doesnt really matter they're both great fun)
Stratergy) Civ 4 or Disciples 2 (3 due out later this year so might be worth waiting)
Adventure) Sam and max hit the road or grim fandango (might have trouble with xp or vista with either of these though)
Mmo) DDO (dungeons and dragons online is the only fantasy mmo to dare to be different) or Eve online
Sports) No Idea I dont like sports games

I guess...
I just like more populated games. You know...ones that take place in cities.
I'd have enjoyed Crysis a lot more if it took place in, for instance, Liberty City, or something similar.
There is a mod that does something like that...hold on...aha! Here:

...Huh.
That is pretty cool.
Too bad there are probably no civilians to murder.
But you can still pick up hapless Korean soldiers by the throat and fling them several yards into hazardous places! Just like in real life!

While you're waiting to buy all of the previously mentioned games.... I recommend you try a FREE Quake-esque game called Cube 2 - Sauerbraten. It is a serious amount of fun, and there's a good balance of veterans/newbies on at all times. I'll see you there!

For RPGs, I would recommend The Last Remnant.
I'm going to have to recommend against that. It was just so... Unfinished. In the demo I played, there was so much left over from the Xbox (Buttons/controls etc.) and even the folder for the config files is in lowercase, which kind of shows you that they didn't put much effort into porting it.

(C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Games\The last remnant trial)
PS: For some reason the slashes won't show.

...Damnit!
I'm sold.
My work here is done!
*flies off into an epic scene*

Back on topic, I'd show them the Warhammer 40K games. And zoom in on the Ork boss as he thrashes enemies all over the place. And the giant demon Chaos leader.

If you don't already have it, get The Last Remnant for PC. It fixes all the major bugs that were in the 360 release, and is very smooth with exception being screen tearing for many users during cutscenes.

If you get it, just remember to go to gamepad options and have it show you keyboard keys, unless you're playing with a gamepad.

Also note TLR is a jrpg, so don't get it if you don't like this sub-genre.

Don't get me wrong -> Counter Strike is utterly fantastic. Just arguably not too 'n00b-friendly'!

If you enjoy strategy, Dawn of War and its sequel are a must. The Command and Conquer series is also fun. Warcraft III is older but still loads of fun, and it shows what Azeroth was like before WoW ruined it. I'd also recommend Oblivion and Fallout 3, assuming you haven't already played those on the 360. Assassin's Creed is excellent on the PC although the control scheme is a little awkward. Despite its age and 2d graphics, Diablo II is also quite fun and still readily available. And if you're getting the Orange Box, get Left 4 Dead as well, it's another incredibly fun game where Valve shows their talent.
Sorry for the random order, I just rattled them off as they came to mind. Enjoy!

I would recommend the Relic games (Dawn of War, Dawn of War II, and Company of Heroes). They're all excellent. And I would get Morrowind, Oblivion, and/or Fallout 3. Even if you already have it on Xbox, the PC has a plethora of mods, including complete game overhauls and unofficial patches.

My Xbox recently got the 3-RRODs and my Wii has lost all sense of being fun, so I've decided to buy a gaming laptop (bit too out-and-about all the time for a desktop) and return to the realm of PC gaming. Just so you know, I've set my eyes on an ASUS G71V since it seems to have enough power to deal with up-coming games.

Other than Crysis and the Orange Box, are there any other PC games I've missed since 2003?

P.S. had the Orange box on Xbox, but still love it enough to buy it again.

P.P.S. also getting B&W 2 because I like it.
any strategy game there only good on pc(except supreme commander avoid it like swine flu)
Yup I'll second the motion to avoid Supreme Commander. If you really want to play it just download a copy of Total Annihilation. ::Sigh:: that was an epic game.

I'm a big RTS fan. I would highly recommend Dawn of War (expansions and DoW2), Company of Heroes (Opposing Fronts, you can skip Tales of Valor), the Command and Conquer series was a staple growing up, and if you are a Blizztard the Warcraft and Starcraft games are bearable.

FPS. The original Half Life was a treat to play. The original Call of Duty games were great (still have yet to play COD5). Quake 4 was entertaining. UT and the Unreal games were pretty amusing.

RPG. All the Fallout games were great. Despite the negative reviews I liked The Witcher. Neverwinter Nights was good if you like the D&D style RPGs. Oblivion was alright (I ADDd way too much though to finish it =( )

I'm sure there's more I'm missing.

Even if you have already tried oblivion on xbox, get it on PC as well (it is dirt cheap) - there are literally gigabytes of mods out there to try and to give you new stuff to do
