I'm going to make a few referances to World War Z here and offer a few helpful hints to the military.
1. If you are going to make a military line in the sand to hold off undead forces, make damn sure you have enough ammunition for sustained operation.
2. You can forget about flashbangs, toxins or noxious gases as they won't do a thing. Also don't really bother with heavy artillery, as the lack of a 'balloon effect' for a walking corpse makes such explosions have almost no effect on large crowds.
3. Remember that no matter what we do in combat, zombies are never going to retreat and are never going to be afraid or fall back, so making a limited amount of ammunition and an emphasis on looking threatening is not going to help here.
4. Do not use landwarrior communication systems that allow people to talk over the battlefield, all it does is allow panic to spread in battle.
The whole battle of Yonkers didn't sit well with me, we hear about it from an unreliable narrator obviously skewed against the decisions. The only problem we definitely know about them running out of ammo and that's never truly explained. Also landwarrior doesn't work the way he depicted it, from what I've heard, it goes up and down in rank mostly and doesn't allow just any soldier to talk to another random solider.
Edit: There's actually a decent analysis at this link:

*epic sigh*
Why can't anyone just let fiction be fiction? I mean seriously, reading that link has actually kind of killed the World War Z experience for me now. I mean the Battle of Yonkers was this huge epic and cool moment of the book and it kept me gripped like crazy to keep reading it. But now I think I'll find that whole thing cheapened because some hardcore people out there just couldn't leave well enough alone and let me appreciate some awesome fictional literature.
So it's not strictly realistic, it's a ZOMBIE WAR, by this point, who cares? The writer obviously just wanted to make an epic action moment to keep the reader stimulated but obviously there exist a whole hoard of people who just have to pick it apart piece by piece, focusing on the 'realism' of the situation rather than the drama of it.
*sigh*
I've actually just reread what I wrote and on reflection it would appear as if I was addressing YOU, WolfThomas, directly. I want to make it absolutely clear then that I am not. I do not wish to bring across the idea that I am angry at you, if anything I'm mad at the people in the link. So I apologize if I seemed at all rude.
So yes, just to make it clear, that was an angry rant that I think had been waiting to surface in my system for a while now and I mean no offense to you personally and I certainly don't think your points were invalid.
Still, if nothing else I can retract that statement about Land Warrior. To be honest I always thought that was a little far fetched, awesome, but far fetched.
But I will hold on to my main point:
Zombies will never, ever be afraid. And an attempt to show off your fighting prowess through huge weapons will only make your defeat more tragic as the zombies will not even pay it any attention.
EDIT: Also I just realized that you had a right to point out the realism in that instance because this is a thread about realism, not dramatic and epic plot moments. So again I apologize if it seems I blew up in your face.
