I think that obviously it's horrible but it is probably much worse for the people around you.
Nothings more horrible than seeing my grandfather not remembering his own son and grandchildren.

Death is the result of everything going wrong at exactly the wrong time.

But honestly, take your pick. They all terrify me.
I just didn't want everyone saying they were scared of dying. Apparently I'm a very morbid person so I wanted to find out what people thought the worst thing about being old and still alive was.

It just occurred to me the other day that my eyesight wasn't exactly brilliant to begin with and the thought of it getting worse when I'm old to the point I can't read scared the shit out of me.

I'm sorry, that is what I meant. I'm sure it is much worse for you than for him.

Sorry for the double post.

Fogetting who people are. It was only when my grandad couldn't remember who I was that I realised he didn't have long left.

As an atheist, the scariest thing about getting old is being much closer to the likelihood of dying. When I die, chances are I'm going to cease to exist. And me not existing is not the thing I have a problem with, it's the fact that everyone and everything I know and love, every cherished memory I've got will cease to exist along with me. My entire internal perceived universe (even it's memory) will vanish. And when one day my parents die, will that mean I cease to be a son? Because the memory of me being a son will have vanished? I think about this shit entirely too much.

Loss of my flexibility, though on the plus side I could be as mean and nasty as I want to humans I don't like and never get any flack.

I agree. going blind would be the worst thing for me too. I can't imagine a life where i couldn't read. Its my ultimate nightmare
I also agree with the whole going blind thing, my vision is already pretty bad so I have to just accept that one day I won't be able to see.

Honestly, the though of having to buy a coffin. What the hell? I live my life to the full extent, and when I know I'm gonna go, I don't wanna have to ass about with the prospect of "Have I saved up enough for a plot in the ground in a pine box?" The cost of a funeral is RIDICULOUSLY high, and that's absolute bollocks. When the time comes, one should not have to pay for a coffin--it should be granted to them, for having earned the right to have a place to rest.

Im not actually scared of growing old. Sure there might be downsides but the feeling I get whenever I think that I will see the world change before me is enough to make me look forward to it.

General Senility. In this case, I mean the belief that everything is hunky-dory in your life, and the fact that you live in an inappropriately named "care" home and you need help going to the toilet simply does not register.

All this talk of getting old... it's getting me down my love

As for what I'm afraid of... dementia.

If I go blind I can still hear
If I go def I can still see
If I go lame then at least I can still enjoy company
Dying is just something we all have to accept, it happens even the best, be it swift or slow

But dementia scares me. Not being able to recognize the ones you love and not be able to think clearly. When not even the memories remain, that's bad. It must be like accidentally deleting a game save, the game is still there, but what use is there playing? May have my facts wrong because honestly, I have never dug into it, I just don't want to think about it.

I have one grandmother with Alzheimer's, another with terminal cancer, one grandfather with macular degeneration and the remaining grandfather recently had a heart attack and had to have surgery. So I was thinking about the sorts of things that go wrong with your body as you get older and wondering which I would least like to happen to me.

What age related conditions scare you? Personally I think I could deal with just about anything as long as I had my books to escape into so my answer would be going blind or anything that would stop me from being able to read.

Please note that I do not mean dying. I mean all the things that start going wrong with your body as you get older.

wow with a history of all those in your family...i dont mean to be negative, but you're screwed.

Between them and the rest of my family we've had just about every type of cancer possible as well. Hilariously none of it is genetic. We are just incredibly unlucky.

My greatest fear, is to wither away slowly, causing distress, not only for me, but for my family as well.

I actually am quite fond of the idea of dying right after your spouse/partner, brought on by heartbreak. It warms my cold, shriveled heart...
