Hey everyone guess what? Today is my 21st birthday! Which means I can buy alcohol in the States!

So besides the shameless farming of birthday wishes, I come to you with a question: What do you think my first alcoholic purchase should be?

I'm having some people over so I will be buying some cheap beer, but I would like something a little more... I don't know "fancy" for myself so I want to know what you think.

2 things to keep in mind:
1) Please do not suggest vodka- I've tried it and I don't like it
2) I don't know of any specialty alcohol stores nearby, so if you would please suggest things that are readily available anywhere

Other than that, let your imaginations run wild because I'll try anything.

Ready...Go!

Try Rum, you can mix it or drink it straight and its pretty much the exact opposite of vodka

Well, Happy Birthday! (Checks post count) Welcome to The Escapist!

Well Alcohol is a funny thing, what you may think is terrible now you may develop a taste for later. So while you may have tried Vodka, your taste buds might agree with it now or maybe you had some crap vodka.

OT though, I would say for starters... Bacardi Silver Rum. Good ol' Jack Daniels, if you want something deliciously sweet try Godiva Chocolate Liqueur. If you want to go a bit more top shelf, a bottle of Crown Royal is a good place to start.

If you want to try wine, on the cheaper side you can try Ravenwood which isn't terrible, or for a sweeter wine try asking for a Port Wine, sometimes refered to as a desert wine.

Lastly, ask your local liquor store if they have any Honey Mead.... Mmmmm Mead....

Go for a good wine or champagne, as you're supposed to be celebrating.

Strange that it's 21 in the US, we can drink from 16 onwards here in Belgium. :) (The land of beer and honey)

State laws confuse me, and make Europe look incredibly liberal.

Anyways, my initial "wowza" moment aside, I can't really recommend anything since I'm a minor (but not in Belgium it seems), so I'll have to go with ginger beer, or ginger ale as you'd call it, to prove how truly innocent I am.

Failing that, you could try a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, guaranteed to make you one hoopy frood... or dead.

Or how about a nice bottle of delicious AND refreshing J2O?

Mead is always good, usually hard to find though... and I have a hard time drinking it indoors, I always want to light fires, loot and pillage. As for something readily available, check out any locally brewed beers. I grew up in New York (The state, not the city!) and I absolutely love Saranac. If you're looking for liquor then Wild Turkey American Honey is always a hit, and its partially responsible for me telling my wife that I'm in love with her best friend who also happens to be my best friend's wife one fateful night...

Glenfiddich Single Malt Whiskey. Tia Maria. Bailey's Original.

Do not listen to the Jack Daniels followers! Glenfiddich is the stuff of the gods, Jack Daniels is merely a cheap knock off for drunkards.

Also an obligatory happy birthday. :D

Don't start at all? Seriously that's the best advice I can give regarding alcohol.

Just go nuts. Try everything you like. Preferably not at the same time though. You can make up your mind fairly easy. Take the ones with the coolest labels if you haven't got an idea. I'd just go for premium beer or one of my favorite wines.

Hmm... So the quote buttons don't seem to be working right now, and I don't know the tags, so I guess I have to do it the old fashion (or lame) way:

@MrPandarium: I was considering rum so thank you for possibly confirming it
@Richard Hannay: Wow I didn't think I would ever meet someone else who drinks that besides my dad. Good to know
@IQuarent: I don't really need to buy water, it's included in rent
@KillerMidget:pan Galactic Gargle Blaster... I've never heard of this but it sounds like a lot of fun!
@Zannah: Your suggestion is noted. I don't plan on drinking as a nightly basis, but this is a special occassion so I hope you'll forgive me if I indulge myself every once in a while (including tonigh). I realize some people have problems with alcohol and I do respect those boundaries.

Anyway everything else will be taken into consideration so keep'em coming!
