I got this before. Mine was for a 20 day trip to England, Germany, Netherlands, and Belgium. I think it's real, because I went to the meeting for it, but it's really expensive.

Okay, so as some of you may know, I'm home schooled and have been for a little over a year. I've enjoyed it much more than regular school and I plan on sticking with it until I get a job or go to college or whatever. But today, I got a letter.

The letter is from a group that I've never heard of called People to People. The letter mentions me and uses my real name and it says they know I'm home schooled and (obviously) where I live so its not just some random crap thats sent to just whoever lives at the current house. The letter was talking about becoming an exchange student.

I didn't think thats how you become an exchange student, but whatever. It says, and I'm quoting this, "To the parents of Julian King, Julian is invited to travel and study in Australia in the summer of 2010...All students must be invited annually, so we are pleased to offer Julian this once in a life time opportunity to travel on a 2010 program."

I don't know why I got this.

So my question is, what do my fellow Escapists make of it? I have no idea what to make of it. I'm not 100% convinced that this is for real. Although I have always wanted to go to Australia.

So what do you guys think?
It's a legit offer, as I got one also. And I've my sister has a friend who used People to People to be an exchange student. But the tuition fees are rather pricey. I think mine was $6000 at the least.

And the trip only lasts for two weeks, IIRC
That's weird. So two weeks in Australia with a bunch of people I don't know with no video games and it costs 6000 dollars. Now I'm more skeptical.

I've been on one of their trips. It was to Austrailia (along the east coast) and New Zealand. It's legit, but explensive. Be prepared to fork out a lot of money. IMO I think it's worth it. It's a unique experience.

Im guessing you would dissapear, sold to the highest bidder. you can check up on the company to see if its legit, though. and maybe you could do it if you want to visit australia.

I wouldn't do it even if it is legit. This is a similar thing to the JET program where they send you teaching English to a random place in Japan for three years, even without teaching experience or qualifications.

If it is real I would do it, of course I like in OZ so I might be biased. Remember: Beware traveler for if the animals don't kill you, the people just might.

Anyway back on topic, I don't think it is real, we've had such things explained at my school and they are always done by a single group, which is not this one.

It actually is a real company. I've been invited on several trips with the People to People program. The invitations are generally only handed out to students with high marks, so clearly you have those. It's not really much of an "exchange student" program. You go to a different country, you visit historical landmarks and what-not. The trips last most of the summer, and the last one I was invited to cost somewhere around $3000.

Quite honestly, it's a good deal all around. You get to go to a different country (or several) and learn some fun stuff. I passed on the deal last time I was invited, but I have no reason to want to visit France anyway.

I got a letter from People to People a few weeks ago too!
But mine was talking about going to Tokyo, Japan.
Not only will i be able to play video games, but i'll probably be playing games that won't even be in America!
Until my mother sees the price for the program....

Its a clever ruse to trap you into slavery and prostitution.
Which funnily enough is actually a better fate than being sent to australia... I guess they do that so you end up in slavery and just think "eh, it coulda been worse. The australia offer could have been real."
Whats wrong with Australia?

Wow, you've never had spam mail? Best to believe it and have your parents credit card charged randomly.

No not from my actual mail box. Of course I have from E-mail, but not from a regular letter.

Why don't we just ask what is right with it. The list is far, faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar shorter.
That is not an answer.
Okay. I will humour you.
What is wrong with australia... You mean apart from the fact that is it mostly desert where depending upon what sector you are in you could be either killed by fire or flood. Not to mention that the entire place is filled with creatures out to kill you. Oh and the accent... My god. .
The same could be said of allmost any place on earth and it would be just as untrue. Our animals are not all that dangerous, deadly sure, but you're not likely to be in danger because of them.
You don't really belive the stereotypical view of Australia do you?

Then theres the no mature games because of one man which really means your government has no concept at all of what the word democracy means.
Yeah, you've got me there.

Even more ownage. I gotta ask though, what do you got against Australia? I mean, I'm sure some parts are shit just like any place, but I'm sure they have some really beautiful places like...uh...ummm.

You know what? Never mind.
