They're using "cheap" moves? Figure out something to counter it. If they're that cheap, you should have no problem finding a way round them.

Wallhacks, glitches and cheats are obviously unfair, "fair" is not "do they give me a fighting chance", "fair" is "Could I do/use that"?

In the immortal words of our own Undeadpope... "Less QQ, more pew pew"

Fair play depends on the game you're playing, if the game doesn't penalise for things like quitting in the middle, the game will be dominated by a bunch of assholes who tweak their connections and such

its a sad fact of online play :(

Most of the major points on this have been covered, and I'd like to take a stab at PSN and it's hardcore fanboys but I can admit that this problem exists somewhat in the Live community as well.

There's not much you can do about it, as the truly well-balanced online games like TF 2 are few and far between. Many companies will strive to fix most of these user exploits that they find, but as a fellow developer I know what it's like to have missed something. You can't possibly think of everything someone will attempt to do in your game. If it comes out and it becomes a problem then you can fix it.

I can also understand how your enjoyment of a game can be ruined by someone's cheating, and there are measures in place to help with that. For example, Live has features that allow you rate, report and avoid or prefer other gamers. This allows you to tag the cheaters as such and then the matchmaking engines will be less likely to pit you against that person again. Not sure if PS3 has something like that though.

Yeah, there are many games with kind of an unspoken code of conduct that many people ignore. I remember playing the first Gears of War, where certain things just didn't happen. Just running around with the chainsaw was a cheap tactic, just sitting there lancering wasn't acceptable, and two-piecing was regarded as the cheap, overpowered tactic it is. Not so with Gears of War 2. There's no honor in multiplayer anymore...

its because they feel like they need to wave their virtual penis at the audience that doesn't care. a ratings system and a W/L ratio does nothing but reinforce this. I played Halo 2 for a time and only 3/10 matches people played for fun rather than winning. Sadly there is nothing you can do but use their tactics (frankly, most of them, suck at their tactics) against them but that makes me want to slit my wrists.
Now this is not fair and allow me to reply since you're actually talking about me too.

Wether i play sports or videogames,i do it to have fun but also i play to win (offcourse!).The one doesn't negate the other.
Maybe you're not competetive at all but that doesn't mean that it's the other people's fault. If you don't like games with winning and losing you can find something else.

Surprisingly i see people who think of healthy competition as the Armageddon.
Haven't you played basketball for instance?Did you run back and forth the whole time only to have fun?I mean, don't you try to win too?

To me it seems that, either people don't like losing or can't stand to compete.Personally i've lost lots of times in lots of things but that doesn't stop me from smiling and shaking hands (in real life offcourse lol). That's how it goes, you play to win but if you lose,it happened! So what?

Last but not least,if an online competition in a videogame is too much to handle, then life will be really unpleasant for you.

EDIT:To fix my mess. Not my day. xD
I forget that people online don't actually know me so I can't type the way I talk. Half the things I said were pigeon-holed and generalized so don't take them 100% to heart or offense.

edit: also my "E" key is broken(I have to hit it multiple times for it to work) so I try to type the minimal amount.

Playing FEAR online on the PC was somewhat frustrating, due to people spamming the jump kick, since it's a one-hit kill

People have discovered that a certain combonation of troops can bulldoze anyone they come across.
Welcome to the RTS-genre. The difference between a bad player and a good player is that a bad player can use a tactic, whilst the good player can use counter-tactics.

Fair-play in RTS.. don't make me laugh. As long as the game is balanced (that is, everyone is allowed to use those kind of troops) then you've got nothing to complain about.

I'm pretty sure (without having played that game) that you can find an unit which will mess up that combination easily. That is, if Brütal Legend is a good game. If Yahtzee's friend is right.. then you better find another game.

Well, I don't know the first thing about online on the consoles, but for the PC I happen to agree. Half of the people that populate online these days are just grievers, or dishonorable fucktards. They loose a fight and they have to be sore about it. How's about growing some balls, taking your loss, and moving the hell on aye.

i think its already well adressed that brutal legend is this. the person with the most units playing slap hands wins its just how the game is tbh. as far as fighting games go. they always have those types of players they will always be like that its why i dont like many fighting games. the last one i liked was dead or alive 4 much more rewarding to the reallllly good players. not to say sf4 isnt rewarding to really good players its just not the same to me. and the line between the button smasher and the guy who knows a few combos in sf4 is a very very thin one.

But I should point out that seemingly cheap tactics such as crowding, juggling, turtling and hadouken spam are nothing new.quote]

The thing about these tactics in particular is that they are overwhelming. When you first start is next to impossible to plan ahead to beat some of these tactics, and if you guess wrong or screw up then you take an as tonne of damage (I'm a honda player so I know about getting pressured into a poorly spaced jump in on sagat, forced by fireball spam, leading to roundhouse, roundhouse, ultra). The thing is though, these aren't cheap tactics, its just standard pressure game, or the old bait and punish with a bit of turtling. There wouldn't be much you could do if they were removed. If you learn your matchup you can deal with most pap people chuck at you. Check out SRK for good advice, or SF dojo for matchup vids.

A mate of mine put a new perspective on forced D/C. I was pissed off after my first G1 final, i was a round up and the bison D/C'd during my ultra (which would have killed) animation, he pointed out that you've beaten the person so severely that they've probably turned off their XBox, the thought of which amused me. So it doesnt bother me that much anymore, and good players never D/C anyways as far as i can see.

One thing that does annoy me is when a game is so unbalanced characters cannot be used. This doesnt apply to SFIV really, but super smash bros melee i played alot (and took too seriously no doubt, but it had a good tourney scene) and the bottom teir characters were just awful, so i couldn't use half the characters i liked. That pissed me off.

Players aren't cheap. The game is. If there's only one thing that stomps everything else, you can just assume everyone will do it.

But it's awesome when a game is actually BALANCED; and there is a fully working counter-strategy to the spam-attack others use. Take Team Fortress 2. People love playing as pyros because in some ways it's a simple class. But when I see the enemy team has like 5 pyros, I switch to Heavy; the anti-pyro. Then, they switch to Sniper to kill me as Heavy. So I switch to Scout to kill the Snipers. Then they build sentries to stop the Scout. Then I switch to Spy to sap the sentries. Then they switch to pyro...

It's a neat cycle. No one tactic works in that game, and I think that can happen in other games. It's more of a designer responsibility.
