OK, I think it's safe to assume that anyone who would make a statement like that probably plays guitar, or some other instrument. The skin flute maybe, who knows.

My response is this- I play Guitar Hero (or rock band... RB is way better) because it's fun. Thats the reason I play any video game. It's fun.

Is playing guitar fun? Not for the first 6 months or so. Believe me, I've tried. For a long time when you're just getting started it's just a lot of missed notes, sore fingers, and time spent tuning. Maybe after you get competent it gets fun, or if you're some kind of prodigy who can just pick up an instrument and play (if you are that, I hate you. Not really. I'm just jealous) but I am neither of those things.

But what do you get out of each activity besides fun? Well, with Guitar Hero you get instant gratification, and a sense of achievement as you get better and up your scores. I've had good days and bad days playing it, and when I'm on, it feels incredible. I have a friend who played through the game on Medium her first time through, and by the time she got through "freebird", she was crying. She said it was such a battle to get that far, and when she 5-starred (what she thought at the time was) the hardest song in the game on her first try, she felt like she had climbed a mountain.

She had played the game for about a week. Maybe 10 hours all told up to that point.

Now, if she had spent that ten hours playing a real guitar(or in reality learning to play a real guitar), she would be frustrated, disillusioned, and sore. She'd also be out at least $200 for a guitar, a tuner, and a book. If she got lessons, she'd probably have more fun, but thats another $100 or so right there.

I don't have any illusions about being a real guitar hero. But I never said I did. Just like I would never pick up a crowbar and take it to the nearest headcrab if a portal to xen ever opened up, I would never volunteer my services as backup guitar for the stones or Dick Dale.

In other words, it's just a game. Lighten the hell up.

That's my response.

If they were designed to represent guitars, then the strings would not be going horizontal (the wrong way) across the fretboard. (They are shown as proper vertical onscreen)

Oh... wait, there IS NO fretboard.

Frankly if someone says something like that to you, then they both A) Don't play guitar and B) Don't study the controller mechanics in GH.
well actually, the controller is even more convoluted than that. In essence, it's a one stringed guitar, as you can hold down a lower string and still only have the highest one be the one played (assuming that orange is the highest and green is the lowest). But then you can also play a chord on this one stringed guitar, which completely contradicts the previous one stringed-ness. So yeah, guitar hero controller makes no sense as far as a real guitar is concerned, but works as a fun game controller.

You mean...in the years playing Counter Strike I could have instead joined the army and joined the special forces? Damn, I knew I was doing something wrong.
Or, conversely, you could've joined a terrorist cell and performed bombings and kidnappings. ;)

But crying over Guitar Hero? Even if you do feel accomplished? That's creepy... very creepy.
Maybe I wrote it wrong. She didn't weep like a baby, but she was moved by the experience. thats what I meant to convey. oops.

Well they do blame some killings on video games such as GTA and Manhunt. Why do people always try and connect real life to games. Why not other medias like books or tv cartoon shows.
Why do people always try and connect real life to games? Because they're too stupid to distinguish reality from fantasy, unlike the people that actually do play games. What a fucked up world we live in.

I wonder when they're going to start blaming martial arts, paintball, and chess ("It encourages people to commit regicide!"). I really would like to see what it would be like if some nutjob were to point the proverbial finger at the bible because "Little Timmy's going to go around crucifying people! Think of the children! Oh won't somebody please think of the children!" Sheer hilarity would ensue. It would be quite lovely.

Yeah, because you don't need about 10000 times as much practice to play a real guitar as the one from Guitar Hero. You can just grab one, go up on stage without any talent or practice whatsoever, and be a hugely successful band leader with legions of adoring fans!

(Hmm... actually, now that I think about it, you actually DON'T need talent to be a successful rocker [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Chemical_Romance], so... um... forget I said anything...)

So people generally connect Guitar Hero to a real Guitar. Violent games to real life violence. I wonder if they would ever blame a stratagy game: "Rouge general once played C&C"

They're controllers shaped like guitars, not controllers REPRESENTING guitars.
Ah, that's representing a guitar. A wheel shaped control would (this may sound a little crazy) represtent a wheel.

But in the real world, it's not as easy as picking it up and jamming. It requires practice and perfection. Even then, after you can play some decent music, what then. Maybe get a band together... go and play a few gigs at the pub if you're lucky.
That's how a lot of rock star started btw. You just need to be....runnin' down a dream.
The very few. Most are still there to this day, drowning in booze only to go home and beat there wives. Another reason to play GH... you don't have to beat your girl when you fail.

i dont want to fork out hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars for guitar lessons just so I can play smoke on the water.

The kick I get out of rocking with guitar hero beats that of the real guitar by far and at a hell of a lot less money.

If someoen had a real dream of becoming a musician and becoming famous and renowned then chances are they wont be playing Guitar hero.

I don't think they would be on this forum either.

People play it cause it's fun. When will people stop telling other people that what they do for fun is stupid. I wouldn't criticise them if they found playing in traffic fun.

I wonder if these folks' parents were all in-yer-face about this sort of thing; "Why do you play Twister when you could be having real group sex?"

"Why don't you play a real guitar?"
"That's a good question. That's a great idea, and we should get started on this immediately. Tell you what, you go buy me a guitar and some lessons for a year or two. It'll be a lot better than this game."

I've honestly had that same thought, since an actual cheap but functional guitar seems to cost about the same as GH. And since GH holds zero interest to me, and actually playing a guitar holds at least a little interest (can't play though, stubby fingers) I have to wonder.

I'm too smart to actually post the question, though, 'cause I'm pretty sure no one is playing GH because they don't know they could actually buy a guitar and learn to play. It's not as though the prices for guitars are some secret knowledge known only to me, after all. So if you're playing GH instead of an actual guitar, I assume it's probably by preference.

Oh, and another thing about this often asked question. The guy I know who plays Guitar Hero the most plays a real guitar too. He's pretty good at both.

So the assumption that Guitar Hero is for losers who can't play real instruments is asinine.

Actually I know a friend who plays both Guitar Hero and Guitar for real. He just loves the game and thinks it's fun. He also loves the guitar. It's not about comparing the two. That's what I've never gotten, why people try and do that.
