I haven't played Guitar Hero yet (I am later tonight), but from what I've heard, it gets really hard. Some people put a lot of time and effort into playing the top level songs on the hardest settings. Is it a comparable amount of time and effort to that of learning to play a real guitar? If it is, the difference is what the results are. The former, you can show off to your friends that you can play a tricky game. The latter, you can play music, maybe even compose your own music and create something you can present to the world and possibly gain a profit form. But, the majority of people who play Guitar Hero don't play it this vigorously, and playing a guitar-themed video game does not mean you have an interest in actual guitars. So, in the end, comparing the two is stupid, even though it'd be cool if more people knew how to play the guitar.

Already in a band, we're going nowhere fast. Take Reel Big Fish's advice and "dont start a band", its more complicated when your in a band, we've had a couple of gigs, and we've got to that point where we dont know what we're doing, and we dont have enough money to get a professional manager.

Games fill in the blanks, i cant skateboard, that why i play tony hawks american wasteland. I cant drive, i play forza. I cant shoot aliens i play halo. I cant fuck a playgirl, ok well i dont play playboy the mansion, but you get the point. They achieve things that you cant do because your not quite good enough or its imposible.

Thats what gamings all about, that and having fun.

A side note - I really ticked my roomate off by explaining that videogame prowess to me is more impressive than guitar skill, I didn't say that guitarists somehow have it easier. But I told him that I would be more impressed by someone 100%'ing Fire and the Flames on Expert than I am by the band that made the song playing it live (as seen on youtube). He felt it was an insult to guitarists everywhere, I feel guitarists everywhere shouldn't be bothering to be insulted because I don't think as much of guitarists as I do of gamers.

Guitar Hero is harder than a real guitar. Sure you can play in front of an imaginary crowd pressing buttons on a tiny plastic guitar. With a real guitar its way more satisfying, you can do what you want with it. With Guitar Hero you can pretend to play songs you don't even love.
Ive been playing a real guitar for more than i can remember and when you give you audiance headbanging seizures its way better that some bunch Muppet like virtual weirdos.

In conclusion, playing a real guitar is way more satisfying and fun.

i dont want to fork out hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars for guitar lessons just so I can play smoke on the water.
Smoke on the water was the first thing anyone learns on guitar. Its THE easiest song I know. Guitar lessons are quite cheap and you don't need them anyway (Jimi Hendrix never did) although they do help.

I'll say the same thing here as I do to people taking my other hobby (Airsoft) too seriously - IT's A GAME, IT HAS NO BEARING ON REAL LIFE.

I think VGcats had it right:
