I'm going to start sending out emails about copyright infringement on all kinds of sites and see what I can get taken down.

Just kidding... but it would be kind of fun to try and bring down fox news or something.
Immediate reaction: "You fucking bastard!" *Reads the rest* "Capital idea you fucking hero!"

OT: Will it affect me in the UK? If not then I should be against it anyway because once one nation does it, others may follow. I'll be damned if I can't use my internet freely!

Presumably Anonymous has a field day and destroys every single company that supported this, in a series of endless onslaughts. The entire Internet gets up in arms, pickets the Capitol until they all get arrested Occupy-style, turns in their Internet subscriptions so the ISPs lose craptons of money, and we end up wrecking the tech economy until said companies start crying about it.

Then we win.

We start the...erm...Sopacloaks, and rebel against the evil empire. True, thousands of angered nerds wearing blue curtains, weilding foam swords, and screaming "fu ro dah" at a load of bewildered rubber bullet happy police officers may not be that effective, but it might send a message, or at the very least, be a very interesting afternoon.

OT: If it passes I give it a few months before it gets repealed due to massive public outcry. I mean a good number of people who will be affected by it don't even know it exists and everyone hates being blindsided. Plus it will weaken or take down several profitable media sites.

But yea Sopacloaks for the win!

Silicon valley will dissipate, facebook will go elsewhere for fear of being a medium for the distribution of copyrighted images (or some other crap) and america will lose millions of dollars in taxes. we dont HAVE to do anything: the US government is shooting itself carefully through each foot.

If it passes, I will solemnly shake my head, and be saddened at the state of the world.

Then I'll mostly carry on as normal, as there simply isn't anything I can do about it. Maybe I'd start using Freenet, or Tor... or one of those types of things.

And this is what tor [https://www.torproject.org/] is for.

If SOPA passes I'm going to set myself to using tor exclusively, the government can go fuck itself if it thinks it can stop me from going where I damned well please online.

You must be a nor-I mean nerd, and have an internet connection. You must also pledge that if we save the internet, we respect it by cutting out the arrow to the knee jokes.

I am a senior developer for an ISP so I know a bit more about this.

FIRST! you cannot region block based on DNS. Thats simply not possible. Yes you can block IP based on region and thats actually VERY easy to do (all countries have specific class A networks assigned to them and on some of our switches we just drop all traffic coming from china as thats never legitimate traffic at work and prevents many hacking attempts.)

SECOND! I am hugely outspoken against both of these bills and have enlightened many of my friends and coworkers to its existence and effect. I have called my senators and stated my opinions on the matter and have done my part as much as within my power to stop this bill going forward.

THIRD! This bill wouldn't block foreign sites for foreigners, it would create a separate internet (via domestically controlled DNS) for the US. The issue with that is not that we are policing other countries internets, its that it creates a greater risk for startups in other countries since they have the potential to lose all US business with no recourse to appeal. Thats the problem the world should have with this bill. It creates an environment where its a greater risk to invest in a startup from another country than a startup in the US. US business to many companies in Europe is extremely important to them.

FOURTH! Further segmenting net neutrality with "eye fo an eye" is not the solution as the people in congress are unlikely to even notice, and it'll just effect people like me who use the internet for many purposes (and whose girlfriend is in another country right now)

In conclusion this bill better not pass or I will be pissed, and google needs to spend as much as RIAA and MPAA on lobbying so this kind of thing never gets this close ever again!

I find it interesting that we're talking about this and one of the latest content posts is "Sweden Formally Recognizes Piracy as Religion". Anyways...

Actually, if SOPA DOES pass, I agree it will be repealed within days. Hell, to keep it from passing, all one has to say to Congress is this:

"The way SOPA is worded right now, I cannot say ANYTHING about any copyrighted work, good or bad, because the act will punish me for doing so...which I feel is a violation of MY civil rights! In fact it is so badly worded, SOPA might actually make it possible to punish a child for wearing a costume of his favorite cartoon character!"

Two things you can do to stick it to the man: Go to http://pastie.org/3038363 and there are some IP addresses that you can use. The other is to pirate everything you would possibly want before SOPA hits. I would recommend pirating from the companies who support SOPA.

Seeing as how I don't live in the US, I guess I'll just continue to use the internet like normal, only with less Americans.

Sigh, really?
Your solution to SOPA is to block Americans out from accessing foreign sites....and this helps why?
Seriously, have you taken anymore than a cursory glance at the SOPA bill or even have a basic knowledge of trade agreements that run internationally?

Just because you live in another country doesn't mean you can necessarily do whatever you want. Countries have various agreements between each other that if you're doing something illegal trade wise you usually can be tried if those countries have set up and agreement. There was a case somewhere in South America where a guy claimed copyright infringement of his music in a game, the game had to be pulled from shelves in many different countries because the countries had an agreement between each other that if one passes the others have to enforce it too.

That said, I hope you realize many major websites are US based, how any big sites are based out of the country? So you block a handful of sites from the US, and you basically just cut a slew of traffic to the site.

But in the end everyone (see: useless morons) is just going to scream "those stupid americans they're ruining the world!!!1!"
I mean really, people call Americans ignorant yet a good chunk of people commenting on America and SOPA really don't appear to know what they are talking about at all.

As I understand, SOPA will affect every website which provides content which is under American copyright - as seen in the UK kid example. They want to controll the internet. This is SO not legal, because their jurisduction then has a major effect on the rights, freedom (of utterance) and - yeah - copyrights of basically THE ENTIRE WORLD. One could simply sue them on UN court... but who will? I'm no lawyer. The greatest problem is that everyone is bitching about SOPA and noone considers doing anything else than "Duh. I'll use VPN clients. A derpity derpity herpa derp derp."

Americans can react BEFORE this thing is passed by taking action in RL, but I don't see any outcry further than posting angry videos on a page that will pretty soon be closed. Until this thing is passed Europe's hands are practically tied. But I see it coming: We have to sort the mess out after it happened.

Sorry if this sounded a bit harsh.
